If one player made the loudest statement, though, it was undoubtedly Dan James.

The Welshman was rated 9/10 after producing an outstanding display and scoring Leeds’ opening goal. His performance was particularly significant because Farke used him in a wing-back role rather than his more familiar attacking position.

James looked dangerous throughout the match, constantly threatening Forest’s defence with his pace and direct running.

His goal was the reward for an energetic performance, but it was his overall contribution that really caught the eye. He reportedly could have created several more opportunities for his teammates and was arguably the best player on the pitch.

For Farke, that creates an interesting selection dilemma.

Trafford continues impressive start

James Trafford also strengthened his growing reputation with another clean sheet.

The goalkeeper had already kept Forest out during Leeds’ 1-0 Premier League victory, and he repeated the feat in the Carabao Cup. Two matches against the same opponent, two victories and two clean sheets represent an excellent beginning to his Leeds career.

Joe Rodon was another standout performer. The Welsh defender produced an important goal-saving challenge in the first half and once again looked comfortable at the heart of Leeds’ defence.

Farke will be delighted with the defensive solidity his side displayed. Leeds have now defeated Forest twice without conceding a goal.

The victory means Leeds have made a perfect start to this particular battle with Forest.

Their first meeting was decided by Anton Stach’s late free-kick, while the second encounter was settled by goals from James and a late scramble involving James Justin and Lukas Nmecha.

More importantly for Farke, the performances of his squad players have increased competition for places.

Elvedi showed that he can provide another dependable defensive option, while James demonstrated that he remains a player capable of changing games.

For Leeds, that competition can only be positive.
