Ipswich Town: Leif Davis on Conor Chaplin ahead of Portsmouth clash

Ipswich Town’s Leif Davis has spoken highly of teammate Conor Chaplin as the Tractor Boys prepare for a crucial Championship clash with Portsmouth this weekend. The left-back, who has been one of the most consistent performers for Kieran McKenna’s side this season, praised Chaplin’s work rate, leadership, and attacking influence, calling him “the heartbeat of the team” ahead of what could be a defining game in Ipswich’s campaign.

Chaplin, who enjoyed a memorable spell at Portsmouth earlier in his career, will be returning to Fratton Park with plenty of motivation. The 27-year-old forward has been instrumental in Ipswich’s rise back into Championship contention, scoring key goals and providing much-needed experience in the final third. Davis believes Chaplin’s mentality could make all the difference against his former club.

“Conor’s been brilliant for us,” Davis told reporters during Ipswich’s pre-match media duties. “He’s one of those players you can always rely on. His pressing from the front, his link-up play, and his ability to find space between the lines — it just lifts everyone. Against Portsmouth, he’ll be up for it. He’s got history there, and I think that always gives a player that extra edge.”

Portsmouth’s home support is expected to create an intimidating atmosphere, but Davis says Ipswich are ready for the challenge. The squad has been drilled all week in preparation for Pompey’s high-energy style, and McKenna will be counting on Chaplin’s composure to help guide the younger players through the occasion.

“Fratton Park is a tough place to go, everyone knows that,” Davis added. “But we trust our game plan. Having someone like Conor, who’s played there and knows what to expect, is massive. He’s been talking to the lads all week about staying focused, not getting carried away with the crowd noise, and just sticking to what we do best.”

Chaplin’s contribution to Ipswich’s promotion push last season was enormous, and his influence has carried over into the current campaign. Davis noted that Chaplin’s impact extends beyond just goals and assists. “He sets the tone in training,” Davis explained. “He’s the first to push everyone to higher standards, and that shows on matchdays. He might not always get the headlines, but inside the dressing room, we know how important he is.”

For Ipswich, the clash with Portsmouth comes at a critical moment. They sit near the top of the Championship table, and a positive result could strengthen their position as genuine promotion contenders. Portsmouth, meanwhile, are looking to re-establish themselves as a force after a strong start to their own campaign. The game promises to be a high-intensity contest, with both sides boasting players capable of deciding the outcome.

If Ipswich are to get a result, Chaplin will almost certainly have a role to play. His ability to unlock defenses, create space for teammates, and stay calm under pressure could be the difference in a match that may hinge on fine margins. As Davis put it, “When Conor’s on it, he makes everyone else better. We’re hoping he can do that again this weekend.
