Crystal Palace made a loan proposal to try and sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher in the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.
It was a hectic summer transfer window for the Eagles, who were forced to try and replace Eberechi Eze, who made the move to fellow London side Arsenal. Yeremi Pino and Christantus Uche arrived through the door as new attacking additions, and speculation also surrounded the future of Marc Guehi, who is out of contract next year.
senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Guehi, with the England international even undergoing a medical with the Merseyside club. In the end, Palace cancelled the deal as they failed to find a replacement.
Fabrizio Romano: Palace Make Loan Proposal for Gallagher
Conor Gallagher
According to Romano, Crystal Palace presented a loan proposal to Atletico Madrid for their former loanee Gallagher. The Spanish giants rejected the offer, with no plans to let him depart on loan in the summer transfer window…
“Manchester United have had a loan proposal rejected by Atlético Madrid for Conor Gallagher. United asked for Gallagher but no plans for Atléti to let him leave on loan. Same answer was received by Crystal Palace one week ago.”
Gallagher, who reportedly earns around £200,000-a-week at Atletico, played for Palace previously when he joined the club on loan from Chelsea. The England international flourished at Selhurst Park, so it’s no surprise that they made a play to secure his signature during the summer transfer window.
Gallagher isn’t a guaranteed starter for Atletico, but he’s still an important squad player for Diego Simeone. It was always going to be difficult to prise him away from the Spanish giants on loan, especially so late in the window. It will be interesting to see if Palace make another move to sign Gallagher in the January window or next summer, but it might have to be a permanent deal.
Looking back at the transfer window, Palace supporters might see it as a success after they kept Guehi and replaced Eze, but the club may think differently. Losing Guehi would have undoubtedly impacted them negatively on the pitch, but there’s now a strong chance that he leave the club for nothing next summer due to his contract expiring, unless they can offload him in the January window.
