Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (14) practices during training camp at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Monday, July 21,
The Detroit Lions hosted a pair of joint practices with the Miami Dolphins this week and if the results are any influence, the Dolphins may want to practice against someone else next season. The Lions dominated both days of practice and it was the fulfillment of a warning sent out by linebacker Grant Stuard earlier in the week.
While Detroit had standouts all over the field, Amon-Ra St. Brown may have shined the brightest. The Lions star receiver made plays on a consistent basis this week and may have gained a new enemy thanks to his performance against the Dolphins.
Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown Creates Instant Rivalry with Dolphins CB Jack Jones
St. Brown destroyed the Dolphins secondary during joint practices and the biggest victim was Dolphins defensive back Jack Jones. After racking up more than an estimated 200 yards and several touchdowns on Wednesday, St. Brown was at it again, grabbing a touchdown over Jones according to A to Z Sports’s Mike Payton.
Sometimes these practices include a jersey swap and a sign of respect from both players. But St. Brown also told reporters on Wednesday that Jones “talks a lot” and didn’t seem to have any love for his adversary.
“I think [defensive backs,] in general, talk more than other guys. But yeah, I think, you know, he’s a talker, but I think that’s just what gets him going,” St. Brown told reporters including ESPN’s Eric Woodyard after Wednesday’s practice. “There’s guys like that, they talk and once you talk back, that’s what they need to get them going. So I know exactly what kind of player he is and that’s…what gets him going.”
Perhaps St. Brown didn’t say anything but his play spoke volumes. Jones was frequently dusted in coverage over the past two days to the point the Lions put up a minute-long highlight practice of his performance. At one point, St. Brown pinned the football against a defender’s helmet to make a touchdown grab, capping off what has been an absurd two days of practice.
This doesn’t look like a team that St. Brown said has had some offensive struggles switching from Ben Johnson to John Morton. And if St. Brown can continue to play like this, he may be making some more enemies once the 2025 season begins.
