Ipswich Town transfer rumour: McKenna has three-man Premier League midfield shortlist

Ipswich Town are reportedly interested in Lewis Miley (Newcastle), Lewis Cook and Philip Billing

Ipswich Town have a three-man midfielder shortlist, according to The Daily Mail.

The report states that Newcastle’s Lewis Miley and Bournemouth duo Lewis Cook and Philip Billing are all potential targets.

Miley, 19, has already made 46 appearances for the Magpies, with 15 of them Premier League starts.

The England U21 international finds himself behind Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in the St James’ Park pecking order though and, while Sean Langstaff has joined Leeds, Joe Willock is close to returning from injury.

Crystal Palace were linked earlier in the summer, but Newcastle are said to be unwilling to sell a player they see as having big potential. Miley is reportedly ‘restless’ at a lack of game time and therefore could be open to a loan switch to Town.

Ipswich currently have three loan players in Cedric Kipre (Reims), Jens Cajuste (Napoli) and Chuba Akpom (Ajax), with Ivan Azon (Como) set to become a fourth. Championship clubs can name a maximum of five loanees in their matchday squad.

One-cap England international Cook has made close to 250 appearances for Bournemouth over the last nine seasons. The 28-year-old started 32 Premier League games for the Cherries last season, as vice-captain, and is contracted until 2028.

He suffered an MCL knee injury that did not require surgery in a pre-season game against Bristol City on July 19 and is still recovering.

Billing, 29, is a five-cap Danish international who has scored 30 goals for Bournemouth since arriving for a £15m fee from Huddersfield in 2019.

The 6ft 6in midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Serie A side Napoli, the Italian club choosing not take up their £9m option to buy. His contract at the Vitality Stadium runs until 2027.

Blues boss Kieran McKenna is keen to bolster his midfield options, which are currently made up of Azor Matusiwa, Jens Cajuste, Jack Taylor and Cameron Humphreys.

Ipswich recently were unable to persuade England U21 midfielder Hayden Hackney to join after agreeing a £15m + add-ons fee with Championship rivals Middlesbrough.
