Observations from Alabama football’s 2nd preseason camp practice

 

 

Alabama football took the field for its second practice of preseason on Thursday. The Crimson Tide, for the second day in a row, let reporters in for a brief portion of the session.

 

Thursday’s practice comes before UA takes a day off. The Tide will practice again Saturday.

 

Alabama football practice observations

— Reporters were allowed out to the practice fields at the beginning of the sixth period.

 

–The temperature had already climbed to 83 degrees in Tuscaloosa.

 

— Alabama went with a rap-heavy music playlist for the early part of the session. Tee Grizzley’s “First Day Out” rang loudly across the fields.

 

— The Dave’s Killer Bread factory near the facility was baking on Thursday, so the smell of baked goods perfumed Alabama’s practice.

 

— Alabama’s offense was wearing crimson jerseys, while

 

— No real changes to the quarterback race. Ty Simpson still appeared to be going first in drills, with Austin Mack, then Keelon Russell following him.

 

— Kam Dewberry appeared to be mixing in more with the first offensive line group at left guard. The Texas A&M transfer is competing for the position with Geno VanDeMark, who was also taking reps with the first team.

 

— Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack helped outside linebackers coach Christian Robinson with his group during the seventh period.

 

— The defensive linemen took turns on the sled, under Freddie Roach’s tutelage. Roach shouted out Florida transfer Kelby Collins after one rep, then paused to help another newcomer, Steve Bolo Mboumoua with his technique.

 

— James Smith, looking leaner than in years past, impressed by fully throwing the sled so hard that it turned on its side. Wommack, assisting with the drill, reminded him that he was suppost to toss it the other way, but the coaches and players still seemed impressed by the move.

 

— No players besides Alabama’s quarterbacks appeared to be wearing black jerseys, which signify non-contact participants in practice.

 

–Linebacker Deontae Lawson, still recovering from from an ACL injury, was fully dressed out, but still wore a large brace on his injured leg. Lawson fell at one point during an observed drill, but hopped back up with no problem.

 

— The media observation time ended after the eighth period on Thursday. Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb is scheduled to speak reporters after practice ends.

 

— Alabama will return to the practice field on Saturday. The Crimson Tide opens the 2025 season Aug. 30, with a trip to Florida State.
