Macclesfield FC goalscorers Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts celebrate.

Former Ipswich Town loanee Luke Matheson was involved in Macclesfield’s incredible FA Cup upset over Premier League side and holders Crystal Palace yesterday.

The 23-year-old full-back came on as a 79th minute sub for the National League North side, who produced the greatest shock in the famous competition’s history.

Matheson, who joined the Silkmen last summer after his release from Bolton, was on the bench when captain Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts put them 2-0 up against the Eagles.

Oliver Glasner’s side pulled a goal back via a Yeremy Pino free-kick in stoppage time, but Macclesfield held on to secure the famous win.

The sixth-tier side are managed by John Rooney, who is the young brother of former England captain Wayne and are ranked 117 places below Palace, making this the biggest FA Cup upset ever in terms of the gap between the sides.
