Swansea City 1-4 Ipswich Town: Cameron Burgess scores two own goals against old club

Cameron Burgess scored two own goals against his former club as Ipswich Town romped to a 4-1 victory at struggling Swansea City.

Jack Clarke’s precise finish from outside the area gave Ipswich a half-time advantage over a Swansea side who produced their worst home performance of the season.

Goncalo Franco coolly steered home from 15 yards as Swansea rallied at the start of the second period but, having gained some momentum for the first time, Alan Sheehan’s team duly handed it back to their opponents.

After Franco lost out in midfield – as he had done in the lead-up to Clarke’s opener – Leif Davis surged down the left before his dragged shot deflected off the sliding Burgess and beyond the helpless Lawrence Vigouroux.

Swansea tried to respond once more and thought they were level when Ben Cabango’s header was brilliantly turned on to the post by goalkeeper Christian Walton.

But Ipswich pulled clear in the closing stages, with Ivan Azon heading in their third goal – and his first for the club – from a yard out after Vigouroux had parried Dara O’Shea’s initial effort.

There was more misery to come for Swansea and Burgess, whose name had been cheered by Ipswich’s fans before kick-off as he faced the Tractor Boys for the first time since leaving for Wales in the summer.

With Swansea looking ragged, Jens Cajuste drilled in a cross from the left and Burgess once more turned the ball beyond Vigouroux as he slid towards his own goal in an attempt to clear.

Ipswich have now taken 10 points from their past four matches, with the unbeaten run lifting Kieran McKenna’s team to seventh in the Championship.

But Swansea, who were booed off at half-time and full-time, drop to 18th in the table after a fourth defeat in their past seven league games.

Analysis: Sheehan faces toughest spell yet as Ipswich cruise home

Sheehan helped Swansea claim 24 points from 13 league games at the back-end of last season after taking over a side who were stumbling in February but the results have not flowed with the same consistency so far in 2025-26.

Swansea’s performances have generally been solid enough but too often this season they have come out on the wrong side of tight games.

It was a different story here, with Swansea well short of the levels required in the first half and ultimately well beaten despite a brief response after Sheehan sent on two substitutes – and changed his formation – at half-time.

This is comfortably the hardest spell of the Irishman’s brief managerial career, with his miserable day rounded off when he was booed by a small section of fans as he tried to acknowledge those in the Swansea.com Stadium’s East Stand after full-time.

There were also chants calling for the Swansea head coach’s departure from some, with the home supporters reeling as the sizeable contingent of Ipswich fans enjoyed themselves on the away end.

‘Cameron Burgess is a Blue’ was the joyous chant from the Ipswich contingent on a day of sharply contrasting moods.

What they said

Swansea head coach Alan Sheehan:

“The first half was incredibly disappointing. We were nowhere near the level that we have been performance-wise.

“We turned the ball over a lot, we looked a bit anxious, we didn’t come out of duels. We were second best, totally.

“Second half we made a few changes to try to give us more impetus. We scored a really well-worked goal.

“Then we turn the ball over again and concede the next goal, then a set-piece. We hit the post with ours and they score.

“You can’t give up these opportunities to teams like this.”

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna:

“You enjoy your away wins, they’re a really good connector for the group. You go away from home to tough places like this and you get the win and you have to work hard for it. It’s really good for bringing a new group together.

“It is a result to enjoy and importantly I thought it was a really good performance.

“From the first whistle pretty much to the end I thought there was lots to enjoy about our play.

“On the ball most of our defending was really good, though we are frustrated to concede the goal.

“But I thought it was a really strong performance, a performance to enjoy and of course a really good result.”
