Sam Morsy transfer latest as Gerhard Struber addresses Bristol City links with ex-Ipswich man

Bristol City are “super close” with former Ipswich Town captain am Morsy, Gerhard Struber has confirmed, with the Robins boss hinting that the Ashton Gate-linked midfielder may be seen in red and white in “the next few days.”

The Reds are understood to be in advanced talks with the 34-year-old, who is currently without a club, having left Kuwait SC in September, over a potential move that would see him join the ranks in south Bristol during the January transfer window.

Morsy, who captained Ipswich as they won promotion to both the Championship and the Premier League, made the switch to the Middle East this summer, having departed Portman Road as a free agent, following the Tractor Boys’ relegation back to the second tier.

When asked about the links earlier this week, City assistant head coach Bernd Eibler suggested such a question was better for Struber to answer, and after the Robins’ Boxing Day win over West Brom, the Reds boss was able to provide the latest update.

“Yes, we are super close with Sam,” the head coach told Bristol Live in his post-match press conference at The Hawthorns. “I would say [that] Sam gives us a little bit more experience.

“He’s a player with a little bit of a different face, and he can be, of course, on the pitch, for us, super important. But also, next to Knighty, next to Rob Dickie, next to Zak Vyner, he can be also in the dressing room for us an important player.

“We had the chance to get him, and I would say [in] the next few days, maybe he has a Bristol City shirt on.”

Even without Morsy in their ranks, the Robins were able to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time since October against the Baggies. In a competitive game, first-half goals from Anis Mehmeti and Ross McCrorie were enough to secure a 2-1 win.

Mehmeti fired home his seventh of the Championship campaign from the edge of the penalty area with less than five minutes played to kickstart the festive celebrations in the away end. Then, a little over a quarter of an hour later, McCrorie slammed into the back of the net from the right side of the area to double the advantage.

For much of the remainder of the contest, it looked as though City would be comfortable, until Ousmane Diakite headed home Mikey Johnston’s corner late in the second half. What followed was a nerve-wracking five minutes plus stoppage time, with the full-time whistle coming just seconds after Albion’s Karlan Grant struck the woodwork.

Although it was far from straightforward, the Robins were able to claim all three points, becoming just the second away side to do so at The Hawthorns this term.

Such a haul has also ensured that the Reds have climbed back into the play-off places, but with matches coming thick and fast between now and the first week of January, no one is getting ahead of themselves.

“I would say it’s really good to realise,” Struber said on City’s position at the halfway mark. “But, we know Millwall is coming, and we cannot relax very much.

“The Championship never stops, that’s the feeling. We go again, and now it’s so important we find a good recovery programme, a good setting for the next game and, of course, in Millwall, a mindset like a winner.
