The NFC North coaching carousel keeps spinning, and this time it’s the Green Bay Packers making a headline-grabbing move.
After losing defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley to a head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins, Green Bay wasted little time finding a replacement. According to multiple reports, the Packers are set to hire former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon as their new defensive coordinator.
For Detroit Lions fans, it’s another reminder that the arms race inside the division is very real.
Gannon is best known in recent years for his stint as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. The results weren’t pretty, a 15–36 record over three seasons, but the context matters. Arizona was in full rebuild mode, cycling through quarterbacks and dealing with a depleted roster.
Before taking the Cardinals job, Gannon built a strong reputation as one of the league’s brightest defensive minds. He served as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2022, helping guide a unit that became one of the NFL’s most aggressive and versatile groups, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance.
Now, he returns to what many believe is his best fit: running a defense rather than overseeing an entire organization.
What This Means for the Lions
From a Detroit perspective, this hire is worth paying attention to.
The Packers’ defense has flashed talent in recent seasons but lacked consistency, particularly against elite offenses. Gannon’s background in creative pressure packages and adaptable coverage schemes could help unlock more from Green Bay’s young core.
For the Lions, who have built their offense around explosive playmakers and a physical run game, seeing a proven defensive architect land in the division adds another layer to an already fierce rivalry.
The NFC North Coaching Arms Race
Between Detroit’s aggressive staff, Minnesota’s defensive overhaul, Chicago’s youth movement, and now Green Bay adding a former Super Bowl coordinator, the NFC North is clearly loading up on coaching firepower.
Gannon may not have thrived as a head coach in Arizona, but as a defensive coordinator, he’s widely respected. If he can translate that success to Lambeau Field, Lions-Packers matchups could get even more tactical, and even more intense, in the seasons ahead.
One thing is certain: the path to an NFC North title just got a little more complicated.
