When Manchester City gave up a two-goal lead against Brentford on Tuesday night, there were more indications of their vulnerability.
Given everything we’ve witnessed from Pep Guardiola’s team over the last several months, the Bees’ late performance at the Gtech barely surprised anyone.
This setback caused them to lose momentum in their pursuit of a top-four berth, but it won’t stop them from chasing the Premier League crown.
The Cityzens are on their travels again this weekend, and Guardiola could welcome back a couple of injured stars back into his matchday squad.
Here’s how City could line up at Ipswich.
GK: Stefan Ortega: Although Ortega has been reliable in goal most of the time, Wednesday night wasn’t his best performance.
Ederson might be given another chance, but it appears Pep will continue to believe in the German.
RB: Rico Lewis In recent weeks, Matheus Nunes has been utilized occasionally at right-back with Kyle Walker out.
On Sunday, though, there ought to be some rotation when the young Lewis rejoins the squad.
CB: Manuel Akanji – When City regains John Stones and Ruben Dias, the Swiss defender will undoubtedly be considered at right-back.
Akanji will remain at the center of City’s defense for the time being.
CB: Nathan Ake-Dias has resumed training and may return to the Sunday matchday squad. Ake will be able to start again, though, since the Portuguese defender is probably going to be kept for the trip to Paris next week.
LB: Gvardiol, Josko By keeping Matheus Nunes in defense and starting Lewis at left-back, Guardiola might give Gvardiol some much-needed rest.
Although the Croat has struggled this season, there aren’t many better options. Hi, is this Andrea Cambiaso?
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – Guardiola has been unable to find the best way to avoid opponents in transition, and neither Gundogan nor Mateo Kovacic have been able to make up for Rodri’s absence at the base of midfield.
RM: Only two City players have accrued more Premier League minutes than Bernardo Silva, the old reliable who doesn’t seem to take breaks.
AM: James McAtee Before the big battle with PSG, Kevin De Bruyne will probably get some rest because he still has it.
As a result, McAtee, who scored a hat-trick last weekend, may be eligible for a very uncommon Premier League start.
AM: Phil Foden In recent weeks, Foden has come alive after a quiet first half of the 2024–25 season. On Wednesday, the Englishman was in west London at the double.
LM: Jeremy Doku: Guardiola has other options, but Savinho has been outstanding down his “natural” flank. In East Anglia, Doku or Jack Grealish might be selected.
ST: Erling Haaland: Haaland helped City overcome their early hole in the rematch, and scoring at Portman Road is undoubtedly the best way to celebrate a huge contract extension.
