Palace shortlist £20m man who scored hat-trick vs Brighton in case Mateta leaves

Crystal Palace and Jean-Philippe Mateta are currently at odds in negotiations over a new contract.

The Frenchman will only have 12 months remaining on his deal at the end of this season, with talks over a renewal yet to progress.

In fact, Mateta has even bizarrely decided to abandon his trademark celebration – in which he kicks the corner flag – as a result of this contract dispute, according to the South London Press.

Every supporter hopes that Jean-Philippe Mateta and Crystal Palace will eventually shake hands, given his newfound status as a fan favourite at Selhurst Park, but in case talks completely collapse, Dougie Freedman has now shortlisted a possible replacement…

Crystal Palace shortlist Elijah Adebayo

A story from The Sun now states that Crystal Palace are looking at Luton Town No.11 Elijah Adebayo in case Mateta needs to be sold in 2025.

It is said that Everton are also keen to sign the 26-year-old, with Sean Dyche even making the Luton Town frontman his No.1 January target as the Toffees expect to lose Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Sun add that Everton would have bid for Adebayo before Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline if a buyer was found for the England international.

Crystal Palace actually showed interest in Calvert-Lewin earlier in the summer before deciding to sign Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal, sources told TBR Football.

Luton Town are believed to be open to selling Adebayo for a sum in the region of £20m after suffering relegation to the Championship.

Luton Town No.11 would be an immediate fan favourite at Selhurst Park

If an agreement materialises between Crystal Palace and the Hatters in January, Adebayo has already done something that would make him a very popular man in SE25.

The man born in Brent actually scored a Premier League hat-trick against Crystal Palace’s bitter rivals Brighton last season, as Luton Town recorded a shock 4-0 win over the Seagulls.

In total, Adebayo scored ten goals in 27 Premier League appearances, including strikes against Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle, which was a fantastic return for a player who had never previously played in England’s top-flight.

Hopefully, Crystal Palace can agree a new contract with Mateta, but if a deal fails to materialise, Adebayo would not be a bad replacement by any means.
