McKenna: Philogene Trained With the Group, Matusiwa and Others to Be Assessed

Kieran McKenna has provided an encouraging update on the fitness of several players ahead of Ipswich Town’s upcoming fixture, revealing that winger Jaden Philogene has returned to full training with the squad while other players, including midfielder Azor Matusiwa, will continue to be monitored before a final decision is made on their availability.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, the Ipswich boss said the return of Philogene to group training was a positive step for the squad. The winger had been sidelined with a minor injury in recent weeks, forcing him to miss important training sessions and match involvement. However, McKenna confirmed that Philogene had successfully rejoined the group and taken part in normal team activities.

According to the manager, the player looked sharp and comfortable during the session, which gives the coaching staff hope that he could feature soon if he continues to progress well.

“Jaden trained with the group today,” McKenna explained. “It’s good to have him back involved with the squad. He’s worked hard during his recovery period and it’s encouraging to see him back on the grass with the team.”

While Philogene’s return is a boost, the situation surrounding Matusiwa remains less certain. The midfielder has been dealing with a fitness issue and did not fully participate in training. McKenna indicated that the club’s medical staff would assess him again before the final squad is selected.

“Matusiwa will need to be assessed,” McKenna said. “He’s been doing some work individually, but we’ll need to see how he responds over the next day or so before making a decision.”

The Ipswich manager also hinted that a few other members of the squad are carrying minor knocks following recent matches. With the season reaching a crucial stage, the coaching staff are taking a cautious approach to ensure players are not rushed back too soon.

McKenna stressed that managing player fitness is particularly important as the schedule becomes more demanding and the team continues to fight for key results. Ipswich have faced a number of injury concerns in recent weeks, which has tested the squad’s depth and forced adjustments to the starting lineup.

Despite these challenges, McKenna remains confident in the group and praised the players who have stepped in when needed. He noted that the squad has shown resilience and adaptability during a demanding period of the campaign.

“We’ve had players step up in different moments, and that’s been important for us,” he said. “The group has worked really hard and stayed focused.”

Ipswich supporters will be encouraged by the news that Philogene is back in full training, particularly given his ability to bring pace and creativity to the attacking areas. His return could provide McKenna with an additional option as the team looks to maintain momentum.

The final decision on Matusiwa and the other players carrying knocks will likely be made closer to matchday after further medical checks and training sessions. For now, McKenna and his staff will continue monitoring the situation carefully.

With key fixtures approaching, the manager will be hoping that more players return to full fitness soon, allowing Ipswich to field a stronger and more consistent lineup in the weeks ahead.
