Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna provided fitness updates on George Hirst and Sammie Szmodics following this afternoon’s 2-1 home win against Oxford United.
Striker Hirst suffered a groin injury in the 3-0 home win against Coventry back on December 6, with a timeframe of ‘weeks’ put on his recovery.
Asked for the latest on the Scottish international’s recovery, McKenna replied: “Still around the same. He won’t be ready for Sunday (at Portsmouth). We’ve got a good spell then until the next league fixture, so hopefully most of his recovery will be done by that point.
“If he’s not ready for the FA Cup game (v Blackpool a week on Saturday), then hopefully the next round of league fixtures (home v Blackburn on Jan 17).”
Szmodics hasn’t been in a matchday squad since the 3-1 defeat at Leicester on December 13, McKenna having said the forward has been ill.
Asked for an update on the former Championship Golden Boot winner, the Blues boss said: “Yeah, he’s been in the last two days with the medical team and rehab team, really. So, yeah, hopefully we’ll get him in around the group next few days.”
