There was hope that Detroit Lions defensive end John Cominsky could return at some point in the 2024 NFL season after suffering a severe torn ACL injury in the summer. However, with only a few games remaining in the regular season, Lions head coach Dan Campbell largely ruled out the chance of Cominsky returning before the end of the year. Cominsky sustained the serious injury during training camp in July.
“I think it’s unlikely. Man, he tried,” Campbell told reporters on Wednesday. (h/t Kory Woods of MassLive). “He’s been in rehab, and he’s doing it. It’s just about trying to get over the last little hump here. It’s been tough. So, he’s doing everything he can, and those guys are doing a heck of a job rehabbing him, trying to get him back. But I think it’s unlikely.”

The 29-year-old Cominsky has been with the Lions since 2022 when Detroit claimed him off waivers. In his first season with the team, the former fourth-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons recorded four sacks, three passes defended, and a forced fumble. He also totaled 12 quarterback hits and 30 combined tackles in 14 games.
The following offseason, the Lions signed Cominsky to a two-year, $8.5 million contract, indicating their confidence in his performance during 2022, where he earned a Pro Football Focus grade of 68.2. In the 2023 season, Cominsky amassed 36 combined tackles, eight quarterback hits, two sacks, and a pass defended in 16 games, including a career-high 11 starts.
The latest update on Cominsky adds to the injury woes for the Lions, whose defense has been hit hard by injuries. However, Detroit still leads the NFC North
