More important details about the 2025 salary cap have been revealed to the Detroit Lions and the rest of the league.
The NFL reportedly told teams on Wednesday that the salary cap per team would range from $277.5 million to $281.5 million, though the precise amount has not yet been disclosed.
According to a memo distributed to teams throughout the league, the precise figure will be decided upon the following week.
The cap space allocated to teams is continually increasing; last year, it reached a record of $255.4 million.
The salary cap has gone up by over $53 million over the last two seasons. The 2024 player cost and salary cap amount were both lowered by $10 million per team, which accounts for the significant increase from the previous season to the following campaign.
This resulted from the addition of $1 million to Performance Based Pay and a $9 million adjustment
Depending on the official cap, the Lions might have anywhere from $49,854,933 to $53,854,933. The Lions presently hold the tenth-most salary-cap space, according to Overtime.
According to OverTheCap’s current estimate, the cap should be set at $279.5 million, giving the Lions $51,854,933 in room.
With more than $120 million to spend, New England will have the most salary-cap space in the NFL. With between $97 million and $101 million, Las Vegas comes in second.
The league’s bottom three teams in terms of cap space are the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, and New Orleans Saints.
General manager Brad Holmes recently told Local 4 News that those in his position spend a lot more time over the offseason than during the regular season.
“I understand that the offseason is named such because there aren’t any football games, but for a general manager, the offseason is far busier than the season,” Holmes stated.
“Being in the draft and having free agency makes things much more stressful and time-consuming. There are many other things you have. You have the Combine to prepare offseason program.
The added salary-cap room might help Detroit’s pending free agents, including as linebacker Derrick Barnes, right guard Kevin Zeitler, and cornerback Carlton Davis.
Detroit has already granted a number of significant extensions and may have more in the works, so the increase in cap space is a good thing.
