Punters have rushed to back Ipswich Town to win the Championship title in the wake of weekend results, it has emerged.

The Blues ground out a 2-0 win at already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday to move up to third spot, two points behind second-placed Middlesbrough with a game in hand.

The other sides in the top two race all stumbled – league leaders Coventry went down 2-1 at home to Southampton, Boro could only draw with Bristol City and Millwall – Town’s foes on Saturday – were beaten 2-1 by Blackburn at The Den.

That set of circumstances has seen punters flooding the Championship title betting market with cash backing the Blues.

According to Oddschecker, more than 40% of the bets placed on the title winner since Saturday have gone on Town.

Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues are still the big favourites at 1/7 – and they are nine points clear of Town, having played a game more – but Ipswich’s odds have been cut from 20/1 to 9/1 as a result.

Oddschecker spokesman Chris Rogers said: “Ipswich have been popular amongst punters to win the Championship in the wake of Saturday’s results.

“McKenna’s team are now 9/1, cut from 20/1 to end the season top of the pile. Bettors have sided with the Tractor Boys with 42% of bets backing them to continue their fine form heading into the business end of the season.”
