Jets’ Sauce Gardner struggles when answering question about Giants’ Daniel Jones

New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner is downplaying a less-than-convincing answer about Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

In a clip shared by SNY-TV in New York on Wednesday, Gardner said Jones was a “good QB” when asked about his opinion of him. However, midway through his answer, he paused for roughly 10 seconds, which suggests he didn’t believe what he said.

Gardner addressed the clip on his X account, claiming he was distracted by something else and that fans should just “chill.”

Jones has floundered lately, which may explain why Gardner struggled to come up with words.

In a 28-10 loss to the Houston Texans on Saturday, he completed 11-of-18 passes for zero touchdowns and two interceptions, including a pick-six to Texans safety Jalen Pitre.

Although it’s only preseason, Jones’ play may raise concerns for the Giants. After finishing 11th in NFL Comeback Player of the Year voting in 2022, the 27-year-old signed a four-year, $160M deal. In 2023, he failed to live up to the contract, going 1-5 and posting a career-low 36.3 QBR in six starts before suffering a season-ending ACL tear.

Even before he flopped in 2023, signing Jones to a massive extension seemed like an overpay. The former No. 6 overall pick has only led the Giants to one playoff appearance in five seasons and hasn’t surpassed the 20-passing touchdown mark since his rookie season.

To be fair to Jones, he has been surrounded by a weak supporting cast throughout his career. He’s never had a wide receiver eclipse 800 receiving yards in five seasons.

Still, it’s clear the Giants aren’t sure Jones is a franchise QB. HBO’s “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants” revealed New York head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen met with multiple passers before the 2024 NFL Draft, including Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams (h/t: Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic).

The Giants drafted LSU WR Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick instead, but if Jones doesn’t improve, his days in New York could be numbered.

The Detroit Lions are making some final moves before the start of the 2024 NFL regular season. The team recently saw backup quarterback Hendon Hooker suffer a concussion. Detroit has signed a veteran quarterback to fill in the position for Hooker while he is out with an injury.

The Lions have signed veteran quarterback Jake Fromm to add depth to the position after the injury to Hooker, per a team announcement. The signing comes from the team not wanting to play either starter Jared Goff or Nate Sudfeld in the preseason. Fromm was drafted by the Buffalo Bills back in 2020. He started two games for the New York Giants in 2021 and was released by the Washington Commanders a few months ago. In his pro career, the quarterback has 210 passing yards, a touchdown and three interceptions while connecting on 27 of 60 attempts. While Fromm has not experienced a lot of playing time in his career, Detroit seems confident in his ability to play snaps under center if need be.

David Savard knows he’ll have to deal with trade rumors again this season Eric Leblanc of RDS: Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard is entering the final year of the contract and he knows the trade rumors will be there. “It’s out of my control, I also understand that the organization counts on a lot of youngsters. There will be rumors, I will have to deal with that and not think about it on a daily basis. It’s part of reality. But I bring a different side to the youngsters, I have experience and I try to help them. If they let me go, I’ll leave them in a better position.”

The Boston Bruins and Jeremy Swayman still working on a deal Jason Ounpraseuth of NESN: Boston Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs on RFA goaltender Jeremy Swayman. “I try not to comment on player personnel contract negotiations. We are still negotiating with Sway,” the Bruins CEO and alternate governor said on “Gresh Fauria,” per WEEI. “I hope that he’s ready to play come training camp. We have some things to work out. I’m sure we’ll get there.” Jacobs said their “unfinished business” this offseason is Swayman’s contract and that the, that they are close to an agreement. RDS: Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman said he’s optimistic that he and the Bruins will reach a contract soon. “I’m very confident.

And I say that because I’ve treated this as a routine this year,” Swayman said. “I’ve been to the team facility, I’ve worked out with the guys, our coaches and my teammates. I know we’re building something special in this locker room and I’m excited.” “I know time will do its thing, and all I can control is how I can be a better goalie for the Bruins this season. That’s the only thing I’m focused on. And I keep telling myself, but I know it’s all going to work out, I couldn’t be happier to be a Bruin.” Which Pacific Division Team Has Some Work To Do? The Bruins have $8.6 million in projected cap space with Swayman their lone remaining RFA.

Contradicting reports from three days ago, Adam Schefter of ESPN seems to be of the opinion that the Cowboys and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are closer to a new deal than recent reports seem to indicate. In an appearance on the network’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” Schefter voiced his belief that a deal would get done before the start of the new season. Lamb has been spending his time away from the team as one of several premier wide receivers seeking a new deal. The former first-round pick is set to play out the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, and while that entails a fully guaranteed salary in 2024 of $17.99M, the Oklahoma-product knows that the real money lies in a multiyear extension.

There have been conflicting reports about just how much Lamb is seeking in a new deal, with some claiming that the 25-year-old is seeking to reset the market for the position, following Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, whose new deal sees him making $35M per year over the next four seasons. Regardless of his expectations and those of the Cowboys, Schefter sees the two agreeing on a contract. “I think the two sides aren’t that far apart on a deal,” Schefter told McAfee. “I don’t think it should be that difficult, but again, it’s Monday, August 20, he’s still not there, still hasn’t gone through camp, so this has not gone the way that everyone expected. My understanding is that the two sides aren’t all that far apart, and somehow, someway, I and others believe that they will figure out a way to bridge their differences so that CeeDee Lamb will be there for Week 1.” When asked about the ongoing holdout of his star wide receiver, Cowboys owner/president/general manager Jerry Jones told the media that the two sides are having “promising talks,” per ESPN’s Todd Archer. Jones’ comments seemed to echo the sentiment spoken by Schefter.

After the team recently made an offer that would see Lamb become the league’s second-highest-paid receiver behind Jefferson, Jones spoke on his optimism. “Well, I think I am, and when I say that, it doesn’t sound too promising. The facts are that I believe we’ll come together. I don’t want to speak for him–that’s what I’m trying not to do–but we wouldn’t have offered him what we’ve offered him if we didn’t want him to be here,” Jones said. It’s a lot of talk for a team that has seemingly been ice cold in recent weeks concerning key player contract negotiations, but combined with Schefter’s comments, Jones’ optimism may be worth buying stock in. With his holdout affecting season preparedness, Lamb’s deal will be a huge weight off the team’s shoulders, but Dallas will still have the extensions of quarterback Dak Prescott and outside linebacker Micah Parsons to contend with.

It’s time for another edition of NHL Rumours. This week has been surprisingly busy despite it being the month of August. We’ve seen signings, trades and all sorts of off-season action. NHL Rumours Future of Montreal Canadiens Defenceman Rumour: Eric Leblanc of French-Canadian media outlet RDS talked to blueliner David Savard in recent days.

The veteran blueliner is aware that he could possibly be on the move this season. (Original source is in French.) Analysis: Savard is entering the final year of his contract that sees him make $3.5 million. The 33-year-old had been rumoured to be on the move at the last trade deadline. However, a deal did not materialize in March. Some teams might have had some issues taking on Savard for more than one season. However, his contract might be easier to absorb with him entering the final year of his agreement. The St. Hyacinthe, Quebec native said he’s aware of the trade chatter around with him and will deal with it the best he can. Athletes that here their name in rumours are often aware that they could be traded at any point. Clearing a Logjam Savard said “It’s out of my control, I also understand that the organization counts on a lot of youngsters.

There will be rumors, I will have to deal with that and not think about it on a daily basis. It’s part of reality. But I bring a different side to the youngsters, I have experience and I try to help them. If they let me go, I’ll leave them in a better position.” Montreal has amassed a solid core of young defencemen, but have already made some moves to clear that glut of talent. Young blueliner Jordan Harris was sent to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of the Patrik Laine trade. Habs General Manager Kent Hughes also moved Johnathan Kovacevic to the New Jersey Devils earlier in the summer. Hughes has young prospects like David Reinbacher and Logan Mailloux that could push for roster spots. Moving Savard could allow one or both of these players to get time at the NHL level. A Tangible Asset Savard is a former Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning and has plenty of experience.

He could be someone that a contender adds to shore up defensive depth. Plus, his cap hit is fairly digestible at $3.5 million. The Habs did make it be known they want to move up the standings this year in picking up Laine. However, Savard could get moved and allow Montreal to get some flexibility for the future. It seems that Savard’s time in Montreal could come to an end this season. However, he’s well aware of this and might be someone a team acquires for a post-season push.
