It looked like the Washington Commanders were going to blow a 12-0 second half league for a heartbreaking loss to the Chicago Bears at home. Jayden Daniels had outplayed fellow rookie Caleb Williams, but it was going to be all for naught.
That’s until a miracle happened. Jayden Daniels’ Hail Mary was deflected and caught by Noah Brown, becoming one of the greatest finishes in NFL history, as the Commanders won 18-15
Here’s the play, which came just a few seconds after the Bears went ahead on a Roschon Johnson touchdown run.
Yes, there is a lot of luck involved on plays like that. But, this ball is ripped 65 yards in the air with great trajectory, the kind that gives a team a chance to complete a Hail Mary.
The Chicago secondary completely screws the play up, as you’ve got to be aware of the tip on plays like this, and the ball has to be knocked down.
But, the biggest mistake is only rushing three. Plenty of smart teams around football are actually blitzing against Hail Mary’s to make it tough for the receivers to get far enough down the field for the play to matter. But, the Bears are not a smart football team. They made that clear when they handed the ball off to a backup offensive lineman on a crucial goal line play in the middle of the fourth quarter.
As for Jayden Daniels and the Commanders, this season was already going better than many could’ve expected. This puts a cherry on top of an incredible 6-2 start that has defied expectations. The legend of Jayden Daniels is only going to keep growing after a play like this.
