Ipswich Town are in talks with Middlesbrough after bidding in the region of £20m for their star midfielder Hayden Hackney, according to reports.

The Blues are in the market for another marquee engine room signing after the £7.8m capture of Azor Matusiwa from Rennes.

And it appears that England U21 talent Hackney, who bagged five goals and three assists in 43 games for Boro last season, is a main target.

According to Teesside Live, the Blues have made an initial offer in the region of £20m, but that’s below what Boro want.

It’s claimed that talks are ongoing between the clubs about the 23-year-old, with Town said to be prepared to pay him £35,000 a week.

Teesside Live say Town’s is the first official approach for Hackney, who’s been linked with a host of Premier League and top European clubs.

He’s said to favour a move to the Premier League, but is believed to be open to a move to Suffolk, should a top tier opportunity not materialise.

Hackney was a team-mate of Town star Omari Hutchinson as England U21s won the European Championship over the summer.

He missed Boro’s 2-2 friendly draw with Rangers over the weekend, but boss Rob Edwards insisted that had nothing to do with any potential move and was instead because of a minor knee injury.

He explained: “H (Hackney) felt a little bit of pain in the back of his knee yesterday and at the minute, we can’t risk anything.

“We wouldn’t want to do that with any player at this time. It’s nothing to do with anything transfer wise.

“There was genuine pain there and Reidy (head physio Adam Reid) said it’s just not worth the risk.

“We kept him at home where he’s able to get some treatment. Listen, we have got good players and there is always going to be interest and speculation.

“But this one was genuinely just a bit of pain in the knee and is genuinely nothing to worry about.”
