Ipswich Town are closing in on the loan signing of striker Ivan Azon from Italian club Como after renewing their interest, the EADT and Ipswich Star understands.

The Blues previously had a deal in place for the Spanish front man and he arrived in Suffolk for a medical earlier this month.

However, speaking after a 1-1 home draw with Southampton on August 17, manager Kieran McKenna said: “The deal hasn’t progressed. I won’t say anything other than that out of respect to all parties. He’s not a player we expect to join the club in this window.”

Ipswich subsequently considered other striker options but, ahead of Monday’s 7pm deadline, have decided to push ahead with what is understood to now be a straight season-long loan.

The 22-year-old, who attracted interest from Valencia this summer, will provide added competition to Town strikers George Hirst and Chuba Akpom, with an injured Ali Al-Hamadi’s future currently uncertain.
