In a thrilling draw against Manchester City, Riccardo Calafiori acknowledged that he was “embarrassed” by the way he celebrated his first goal for Arsenal.
Italians are “embarrassed” by Calafiori’s response as he celebrates Arsenal’s opening goal in a 2-2 draw with Man City.
The 22-year-old wheeled away in delight and pointed wildly in all directions after the Italy international hit a spectacular goal into the top corner during last month’s 2-2 draw at the Etihad. When he looks back on it today, Calafiori seems to regret what he did when he embraced manager Mikel Arteta.
“You couldn’t play a more difficult game than this,” he said to BBC Football Focus. I simply said, “Now, I want to shoot in the top bins,” when Gabriel Martinelli passed the ball to me. Is this how you describe it? or in the corner. The person who ran to Arteta was someone else, and I’m not sure who it was. And I swear, I have no idea to whom I was [pointing] continuously. I felt completely blank. Yes, I feel ashamed. What did I do? “What have I done?”
This summer, Calafiori made a £42 million ($54 million) trade from Bologna to Arsenal. He has since shown promise as a backup left and center defender. In their attempt to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004, the Italian will seek to maintain the Gunners’ defense and perhaps contribute with the occasional goal.
The former Roma player might play on Saturday night when Arsenal, currently in third place in the Premier League standings, travels to 13th-place Bournemouth.
