“I really enjoyed Ipswich, but…” – Szmodics discusses deadline day loan to Derby

Sammie Szmodics has opened up about his deadline day loan move to Derby County, admitting the decision to leave Ipswich Town—albeit temporarily—was not an easy one. The attacking midfielder, who became a firm favourite among Blues supporters during his time at Portman Road, was keen to stress that his departure was driven by ambition rather than dissatisfaction.

Szmodics arrived at Ipswich with expectations and quickly lived up to them, contributing goals, creativity and an infectious work ethic that endeared him to fans and teammates alike. Reflecting on his spell with the club, the 29-year-old spoke warmly about the environment Kieran McKenna has built, describing it as one of the most enjoyable periods of his career.

“I really enjoyed Ipswich,” Szmodics said. “From the first day, I felt welcomed by the staff, the players and the fans. The style of football suited me, and it’s a club that’s clearly going places. That made the decision difficult, because there was nothing negative about my time there.”

However, as the January transfer window ticked toward its close, Szmodics found himself at a crossroads. With Ipswich competing on multiple fronts and boasting fierce competition in attacking areas, regular minutes became less certain. For a player who thrives on rhythm and consistency, the opportunity presented by Derby proved too compelling to ignore.

“I’m at a stage in my career where I need to be playing week in, week out,” he explained. “Derby came in late, but they showed real belief in me. They made it clear how I’d fit into their plans, and that honesty mattered.”

The Rams, pushing hard to strengthen their squad during a crucial phase of the season, moved swiftly on deadline day to secure Szmodics’ signature. The loan deal offers him a chance to play a central role in Paul Warne’s side, while also providing Ipswich with flexibility as they manage their squad depth.

Szmodics was keen to emphasize that his move should not be interpreted as closing the door on his Ipswich future. On the contrary, he views the loan as an opportunity to develop further and return as a better, sharper player.

“This isn’t a goodbye,” he said. “It’s more about going out, proving myself again, and coming back stronger. I’ve got a lot of respect for Ipswich, and I’ll always be grateful for the chance they gave me.”

From Ipswich’s perspective, the decision reflects a pragmatic approach. Allowing Szmodics to leave on loan ensures he maintains match fitness while continuing to add value, rather than stagnating on the bench. It is a move that aligns with the club’s player-centric philosophy under McKenna.

As for Derby, they gain a proven performer with Championship experience and a point to prove. Szmodics’ versatility across the front line and his eye for goal could prove decisive as the Rams chase their objectives in the second half of the campaign.

Ultimately, Szmodics’ story is one of professionalism and ambition. His affection for Ipswich remains clear, but so too does his determination to keep pushing forward. Sometimes, in football, enjoying a place isn’t enough—you also have to follow the path that keeps you playing, growing, and believing in what comes next.
