Hosts Morocco opened the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought but deserved 2–0 victory over a resolute Comoros side, as two second-half goals finally broke the resistance of the tournament’s early surprise package. In front of a vibrant home crowd, the Atlas Lions showed patience, control and quality to make a winning start to their Afcon campaign.
The opening match of the tournament carried enormous expectation for Morocco, who entered Afcon 2025 as one of the favourites following their impressive performances on the continental and global stage in recent years. However, Comoros arrived with no intention of being overawed, setting up compactly and frustrating the hosts throughout a tense first half.
Morocco dominated possession from the opening whistle, circulating the ball confidently across midfield and probing for openings down the flanks. Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi were heavily involved, attempting to stretch the Comoros back line, but clear chances proved difficult to come by. Comoros defended with discipline and organisation, keeping their lines tight and limiting Morocco to speculative efforts from distance.
The visitors also showed moments of ambition on the counterattack, using their pace to test Morocco’s defensive focus. While they rarely threatened goalkeeper Yassine Bounou directly, their willingness to push forward ensured the hosts could not afford complacency.
The first half ended goalless, prompting a mix of frustration and anticipation among the home supporters. Morocco had controlled the tempo but lacked the cutting edge required to unlock Comoros’ stubborn defence.
The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after the restart. Morocco increased the tempo, moving the ball quicker and committing more bodies forward. Their persistence paid off in the 56th minute when a well-worked move down the right culminated in a decisive finish inside the box, sending the stadium into celebration and lifting the pressure off the hosts.
With the deadlock broken, the game opened up. Comoros were forced to abandon their deep defensive shape in search of an equaliser, creating more space for Morocco to exploit. The Atlas Lions grew in confidence, dictating play and controlling possession with greater authority.
Comoros continued to battle bravely, showing resilience and refusing to collapse despite falling behind. Their goalkeeper produced several important saves to keep his side in contention, while the defenders fought to limit further damage.
Morocco sealed the victory in the 78th minute with a second goal that reflected their superiority in the latter stages. A swift attacking transition caught Comoros off guard, and a composed finish ensured the hosts could finally relax and manage the closing minutes with confidence.
The final whistle was met with loud applause as Morocco secured three points to kick off Afcon 2025 on a positive note. While the scoreline suggested comfort, the match served as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead in the tournament.
For Comoros, defeat did little to diminish their credit. Their disciplined display demonstrated that they are capable of competing at this level and could yet play a key role in the group.
Morocco, meanwhile, will be encouraged by their patience and professionalism, knowing that tournament football often demands resilience as much as flair. With expectations high, the Atlas Lions have laid down an early marker — but tougher tests undoubtedly await.
