Harry Winks closing in on Leicester City transfer exit as medical ‘booked’

Harry Winks is edging closer to the Leicester City exit door, with reports suggesting that a medical has now been booked ahead of his proposed move to Italian side Cagliari. The experienced midfielder appears set to bring his three-year spell at the King Power Stadium to an end as both clubs work to complete the final stages of the transfer.

The 30-year-old joined Leicester from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023 and quickly became one of the club’s most influential players. During the Foxes’ Championship-winning campaign under Enzo Maresca, Winks was a regular starter, dictating play from midfield with his calm passing and ability to control possession. His performances earned praise from supporters and played a major role in Leicester’s immediate return to the Premier League.

However, the past two seasons have been far more difficult. Leicester’s fortunes declined dramatically, ending with successive relegations that left the club preparing for life in League One. Winks also found himself at the centre of several off-field issues, including disagreements with former managers and a strained relationship with sections of the fan base. Those setbacks limited his impact and made an exit increasingly likely.

Cagliari have now emerged as the favourites to secure his signature. The Serie A club believe Winks can add valuable experience and composure to their midfield, especially given his previous spell in Italy with Sampdoria during the 2022-23 season. Although that loan campaign ended with Sampdoria’s relegation, Winks gained useful experience of Italian football and is believed to be open to returning to Serie A.

Reports indicate that the player’s medical has been scheduled, signalling that negotiations are entering their final phase. Once the medical is successfully completed, Winks is expected to sign a long-term contract with the Sardinian club, bringing an end to his Leicester career.

For Leicester City, Winks’ departure would also represent an important financial decision. The midfielder is among the club’s higher earners, and reducing the wage bill has become a key objective following relegation. The Foxes have already allowed several experienced players to leave this summer as they reshape the squad under new manager Russell Martin.

Martin faces the difficult task of rebuilding a squad capable of challenging for promotion while operating under tighter financial restrictions. Selling players on Premier League-level salaries will provide greater flexibility in the transfer market and allow the club to invest in younger, hungrier talent.

Although Winks still had one year remaining on his Leicester contract, all parties appear to agree that this is the right moment for a fresh start. For the midfielder, a return to Serie A offers the opportunity to revive his career in a league that suits his technical qualities. For Leicester, his exit marks another significant step in a major squad overhaul as the club attempts to recover from one of the most disappointing periods in its recent history.

If the medical proceeds without complications, an official announcement confirming Harry Winks’ transfer to Cagliari is expected in the coming days, closing the chapter on a memorable but ultimately mixed spell with Leicester City.
