Jared GoffĀ is headed to the Pro Bowl for the third time in his five seasons asĀ Detroit LionsĀ quarterback.
Goff, the first alternate for the Pro Bowl at quarterback, was named a replacement for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold on Monday, Jan. 26.
Darnold and the Seahawks will face Drake Maye and the New England PatriotsĀ in the Super Bowl.
Goff, 31, hadĀ one of the best seasons of his career, though theĀ LionsĀ missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record. He finished second in the NFL withĀ 4,564 passing yardsĀ and completed 68% of his passes with 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions while taking a career-high 38 sacks.
Goff had five turnovers in a Christmas Day loss to the Minnesota Vikings thatĀ eliminated the Lions from the playoffs, but two of the fumbles came on bad snaps and Lions coach Dan Campbell gave Goff a strong vote of confidence days later.
“Jared Goff is stud. Heās an absolute stud,” CampbellĀ said in a radio interview on WXYT-FM (97.1). “Weāre fortunate to have him as a quarterback. Heās a winning quarterback in this league. He played at a very high level all season long. He played even better than he played the year before, and heās continued to play better.”
Acquired inĀ a 2021 trade with the Los Angeles RamsĀ along with three draft picks for Matthew Stafford, Goff has started every game for the past four seasons and is 48-33-1 as Lions quarterback.
In the 2022 season, Goff joined Stafford and Greg Landry as the only Lions quarterbacks to make the Pro Bowl since Bobby Layne in the 1950s, and GoffĀ was picked for the game again last year.
The Lions hadĀ five players picked for this year’s Pro BowlĀ on the original ballot: Right tackle Penei Sewell, receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, linebacker Jack Campbell and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.
