Chelsea Reject Opening Loan Offer from Leeds United for Mykhailo Mudryk as Negotiations Continue

Chelsea have rejected an opening loan proposal from Leeds United for Mykhailo Mudryk, although discussions between the two Premier League clubs are expected to continue as both sides explore a possible agreement for the Ukrainian winger.

Leeds are understood to have made an approach for Mudryk with the intention of taking him on a season-long loan. However, Chelsea were not satisfied with the terms of the initial proposal and turned it down. Despite the rejection, the move has not been ruled out, with negotiations still ongoing between the clubs.

Mudryk’s future has become one of the interesting stories of Chelsea’s transfer window. The 25-year-old is looking for regular first-team football after spending a lengthy period away from competitive action. A move to Leeds could provide him with the opportunity to regain his rhythm, confidence and match fitness in the Premier League.

The winger has recently been cleared to return to football following the resolution of his anti-doping case. The Football Association confirmed on July 31 that an agreement involving Mudryk, the FA and the World Anti-Doping Agency had brought the proceedings to an end. Under the agreement, his period of ineligibility was considered to have been served, meaning he was immediately eligible to compete again.

Mudryk had been provisionally suspended after a sample collected in October 2024 revealed the presence of meldonium. An independent regulatory commission subsequently imposed a four-year period of ineligibility, but Mudryk appealed the decision. Changes to WADA’s technical guidance regarding meldonium played a significant role in the eventual resolution of the case.

His long absence means regular competitive football is particularly important at this stage of his career. Reports indicate that Mudryk is open to joining Leeds, with the club viewed as an attractive destination because of the possibility of consistent Premier League playing time.

For Leeds, the potential arrival of Mudryk would represent an attempt to add pace and attacking threat to their squad. The Ukrainian is capable of operating on either flank but has generally been associated with playing from the left. His speed and ability to attack defenders could offer Leeds another option in the final third.

However, Chelsea’s rejection of the first proposal suggests that the London club have specific conditions they want met before allowing the player to leave. Reports suggest the initial offer fell significantly below Chelsea’s expectations, meaning Leeds may need to improve their proposal if they want to take the negotiations forward.

Chelsea’s preference for a loan would also allow the club to retain control over Mudryk’s long-term future while giving him the chance to rebuild his career elsewhere. The club signed him from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth up to around £88 million, so Chelsea will want to protect the value of their investment.

Mudryk has already returned to action during Chelsea’s pre-season preparations, giving him an opportunity to demonstrate that he is ready for the demands of competitive football once again. A full season playing regularly could be crucial to determining what comes next for him at Stamford Bridge.

For now, no agreement has been reached between Chelsea and Leeds. The opening bid has been rejected, but negotiations remain active, leaving the door open for Leeds to return with improved terms.
