Wolves Striker Cunha Could Face Extended Ban Following FA Cup Red Card
    Saturday, 1st Mar 2025 21:23

Wolves’ star striker Matheus Cunha could face a lengthy ban after being red-carded for violent conduct during his club’s on-penalties FA Cup defeat at AFC Bournemouth this afternoon.

Having levelled for the Old Gold, who are 17th in the Premier League, one place and five points ahead of the Blues, to make the fifth round tie 1-1, Cunha was dismissed by referee Sam Barrott in the closing moments of extra-time for punching, kicking and headbutting Cherries defender Milos Kerkez.

The Brazilian international subsequently appeared to refuse to leave the touchline while arguing with staff who were pointing him towards the dressing room.

    ..
    >A red card for violent conduct triggers an automatic three-match suspension but Cunha could face a longer spell on the sidelines depending on the referee’s report and how the FA might view the incident.

Following Town’s 2-1 win at Molineux in December, Cunha elbowed and aggressively removed a member of the Blues’ security staff’s glasses.

The clash was missed by referee Simon Hooper but the 26-year-old later accepted an FA charge and was suspended for two matches and fined £80,000.Given that background, the FA may look to extend his ban beyond the three which will see Wolves’ 15-goal top scorer miss the Premier League games against Everton, Southampton and West Ham. A one-match extension would see him miss the trip to Portman Road in April.

Cunha apologised to his teammates in an Instagram story after the match: “In the end, another game where you guys did your best. I couldn’t lose my head at the end. Sorry.”

Head coach Vitor Pereira said: “After this game the emotional side was very high. A lot of pressure. In the end [Cunha’s reaction] is what can happen. It should not happen, but this is something that happens in football and we must deal with the situation.”

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner expects striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to miss next Saturday’s Premier League match against Town at Selhurst Park after the Frenchman suffered a serious ear injury in the Eagles’ 3-1 FA Cup victory over Millwall.

Mateta, who scored the only goal when the teams met at Portman Road in December, was stretchered off in the 15th minute following a high challenge from Millwall keeper Liam Roberts, who was red-carded.

Sheehan: We’re in a Great Position But We’ve Eight Really Tough Games to Go
Saturday, 1st Mar 2025 14:07 by Asif Burhan

Ipswich Town Women travel to Canvey Island on Sunday for a potential title decider in the FAWNL Southern Premier League promotion race against their perennial rivals Hashtag United (KO 2pm).

The Essex side sit top of the table by three points but victory away to the league leaders would see Town replace them with three games still in hand.

Speaking to media at Playford Road, head coach Joe Sheehan revealed he cannot wait for the game.0:00

    /
“Really excited,” he said. “We first started preparing for it last week. We spoke early on and said how excited we are for this game. We enjoy playing them because we know the qualities they bring.

“They’re a really top team in our division, we’ve got so much respect for the success that they’ve had for quite a few years now. They beat Newcastle in the League Cup final last year, who are now competing really well in the Championship, so we know they’re a strong team.”

Win or lose to Hashtag, Ipswich Town Women have promotion to the Women’s Championship in their own hands. They remain unbeaten in the league this season and will hope to maintain that record following their toughest away game in the Women’s National League. However, for the time being, Sheehan will not let his squad think about the future, concentrating minds on the job in hand.

“We’re in a great position, but we’ve got a really tough eight games to go,” he continued. “We’ve detached ourselves really from the outcome of this season.

“We haven’t really spoken too much about that. We’ve immersed ourselves in preparing and training and attacking every day as best we can. It isn’t something we think about as a group, as staff, as players. We just put everything into every day and every game.

“If we can perform well and win, it’s another one ticked off and then we just repeat the whole cycle.”

The eagerly-awaited clash at the Steve Taxis Stadium will be the fourth meeting between the two sides this season. Town won an early-season league encounter 2-0 at Felixstowe but Hashtag gained revenge by knocking the Suffolk side out of the FAWNL Cup at the same venue.

The two teams were also drawn together in the FA Cup, where Town came from behind, dramatically equalising in the 96th minute to make the scoreline 2-2, before going through after winning the penalty shoot-out.

“Obviously with each game, we learn a little bit more,” says Sheehan. “The more you play them, the more you’re aware of their players and their threats. We’ve certainly learned a lot from the three games that we’ve played. A couple that have gone in our favour, one not so.

“We’ll be well prepared for the game, but likewise, they’ll feel the same about us having played us on a few occasions. It kind of works both ways.

“It promises to be a really exciting, challenging and competitive game that’s going to bring out the best in both teams and we’ll see how it goes.”

Last month, Hashtag United strengthened their squad by signing Eloise King from Ipswich who may play against her former team-mates this weekend, something that Sheehan admitted will be “a strange experience”.

Since the turn of the year, the league leaders have scored 42 goals in seven games, including double figures in three matches, as they attempt to make up a deficit of 21 in goal difference.

Sheehan added: “Maybe they’ve tried to be a bit more attacking, aware of the goal difference that we have between us. But I think they’ve always been capable of scoring a lot of goals to be honest, they’re a really front-foot team that like to get the ball forward quick and commit a lot of bodies forward.

“They’re really good in transition, they’re really good at pressing. They’re good at stopping attacks and they’re really good at suffocating you at times and making you feel trapped.

“When they play with that much intensity and that much pressure, then they often force themselves into the opposition’s goal at times and we’ve seen that on countless occasions in the last few times that we’ve watched them.

“It’s no surprise that they’ve scored a lot, they’ve got some good players in attacking areas that can cause a lot of problems and we’ll have to make sure we’re well prepared to deal with that threat.”

With no game last weekend, the club posted a light-hearted video of Maisy Barker and Ella Rutherford doing impersonations of every member of the squad. I asked Sheehan what he thought of Rutherford’s insinuation that he used the world ‘alright’ in every team-talk.

“We’ve had a bit of discussion over it!” he smiled. “I probably have said that on the odd occasion. Whether she said it as good as I can say it, I’m not sure but yeah, it did make me laugh a little bit.”

O’Brien: No Matter What Happens On Sunday the League’s Not Done – Ipswich Town News

As Ipswich Town prepare to face Hashtag United for the fourth time this season, their two wins in the previous three encounters have revolved heavily around Lucy O’Brien, who spoke to Asif Burhan ahead of Sunday’s game at Canvey Island’s Steve Taxis Stadium (KO 2pm).

The midfielder scored the opening goal in their 2-0 league win over the Essex side in September before coming on to drive home the winning penalty in the dramatic shoot-out victory over Hashtag in the Women’s FA Cup.

“With the league fixture, we all knew it was a big match,” O’Brien recalled. “It was only the second game of the season. There was still everything to play for.

“I scored quite early on, there was no shying away from how good that felt. It was a big goal to take the early lead.

“I think in the FA Cup, it was even more special. The last penalty – nerves were going – but I backed myself, backed my team-mates as well and, yeah, I was just lucky enough to put it away.”

O’Brien was a substitute in that match and the impact from the bench was felt again in Town’s last league match at home to Exeter City when another sub Ella Rutherford rifled home a crucial late winner in a 2-1 win.

She feels that this demonstrates that every member of the squad has a part to play for the rest of the season.

“I think it leaves the team in a really good place,” she added. “We all know that no matter where you are in the squad, you’ve got a massive part of play.

“Sometimes coming off the bench is more important than those who start. I’d even say for those who miss out on the squad, they play such an important part during the week and they really help the team supporting from the sidelines as well on the Sunday.

“We’re so lucky that we’ve got such great depth in our squad and we’ve also a brilliant togetherness so matter what role you play, everyone plays their part.”

Town remain unbeaten in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division with eight games remaining. If that record is still intact at the end of this weekend, the possibility of going through the entire season undefeated becomes much more of a reality. O’Brien however prefers not to dwell on the thought.

“Obviously it’s a nice accolade if we’re able to do it but I think our primary focus is, of course, promotion,” O’Brien, who has been at Town since 2020, continued.

“We’d be silly to say it wasn’t. If, with that, we get the invincible season, then that would be brilliant. We just take each game as it comes, try and get the three points and if something happens off the back of that, then that would be great.”

A win on Sunday over the current league leaders would put Town top with three games in hand, a huge advantage considering Hashtag United would only have four games remaining themselves. Having gone so close to promotion in the last few seasons, O’Brien knows it would be too soon to start celebrating.

“We’ve been in this division long enough to know that no matter what happens on Sunday, the league’s not done,” the 21-year-old said.

“We’ve got seven games after that will be of equal importance. Of course, people might be looking at what might happen to the table but for us, in the training ground and the team, we’re very much focused on the next game and then the one after that.”

O’Brien has represented England at youth level playing in the same age group as current internationals Aggie Beever-Jones, Laura Blinkilde-Brown, Grace Clinton and Ruby Mace. On Wednesday, Clinton started for England as they defeated the world champions Spain at Wembley, an inspiring moment for the watching O’Brien

“I think there was four of them from my age group that were within the squad,” she said. “For me, that’s quite special to see. My dad was saying ‘oh, you played with them when you were younger’.

“It’s quite inspiring for me to see those players that I’ve shared experience with at England now going on to play for the seniors. It’s something that I’m striving to do and hopefully, one day, I’ll be able to.”

In the opposition side on Sunday, will be former Town player Eloise King, who recently moved to the Essex side after seven years at the club she grew up supporting.

King scored four times on her first start for Hashtag against Barking and O’Brien knows only too well the threat she now poses to the team.

“She’s a good friend, so I’ve spoken to her,” she added. “We haven’t talked about football but we all know she’s a good player. She’ll be up for it on Sunday but so will we. It should be a really good game.”

Ipswich Town are interested in signing a £3.5m World Cup defender who is at the top of his game, according to David Ornstein.

    Ipswich Town’s Premier League signings

The Tractor Boys have been doing everything they can to buck the trend and remain in the Premier League after winning back-to-back promotions from League One under Kieran McKenna.

However, as things stand, Ipswich occupy one of the three relegation spots alongside Leicester City and Southampton with their most recent 3-2 defeat coming at Old Trafford to 10-player Man Utd despite a brace from Jaden Philogene.

Ipswich chiefs have backed McKenna in both the summer and January transfer markets, though, bringing in a number of new players and splashing the cash.

Now, attention appears to be on the summer window, and a new target has emerged as Ipswich look to add to their defensive ranks.

Ipswich Town want to sign £3.5m defender, says Ornstein

According to reliable transfer reporter Ornstein of The Athletic, relayed by The Celtic Way, Ipswich Town are keen on signing Celtic defender Alistair Johnston, joining Premier League rivals Fulham in the race for a deal.

“I know Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston is generating attention from clubs in England, with Fulham among his admirers. The Canada international recently signed a new contract at Parkhead and isn’t known to be unhappy – but there was firm interest in January.

“From what I hear, it’s not only Fulham but also Ipswich and others who are looking at him. Johnston was longlisted for the Best FIFA Men’s XI last year, so this is probably no surprise, and I’d expect more suitors to emerge from the Premier League and across Europe in the summer.”

Johnston made the move to Celtic in January 2023 for an initial £3.5m and has gone from strength to strength at Parkhead, with his Transfermarkt valuation now at a career high €9m.

A Canada international who has represented his country at the World Cup, Johnston is primarily a right-back but can also play as a centre-back or right midfielder.

You’d expect that with the 26-year-old’s growing reputation, Ipswich will need to remain in the top flight to have a chance of signing Johnston, but a deal could be one to keep an eye on over the coming months.

Celtic star generating transfer ‘attention’ with Fulham and Ipswich Town among admirers

Celtic star Alistair Johnston is being monitored by Premier League sides Fulham and Ipswich Town.

Johnston signed for the Hoops in January 2023 under Ange Postecoglou as he replaced Josip Juranovic at right-back after the Croatian’s departure to Union Berlin.

The Canadian excelled on his debut against Rangers and has gone on to win six major trophies with Celtic including two Premiership titles.

Johnston played a pivotal part in Celtic’s Champions League journey to the knockout phase play-offs against Bayern Munich with 38 appearances under his belt this season across all competitions.

He’s scored four goals from right-back this campaign while adding nine assists. And it appears his brilliant form for the Hoops is attracting interest down south.

Alistair Johnston wanted by Fulham & Ipswich Town

The Athletic’s David Ornstein held an online Q&A on Thursday and much of the questions centred around transfers.

He was asked by one fan: “Have you heard any mumblings on Fulham’s transfer incomings/outgoings?”

Ornstein shared that Fulham were interested in signing Johnston in the January transfer window, but no bids were seemingly lodged.

The reporter then explained that Ipswich Town – struggling in the Premier League at the moment – are also looking at Johnston with other suitors across Europe to emerge in the summer.

Ornstein wrote: “I know Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston is generating attention from clubs in England, with Fulham among his admirers.

“The Canada international recently signed a new contract at Parkhead and isn’t known to be unhappy – but there was firm interest in January.

“From what I hear it’s not only Fulham but also Ipswich and others who are looking at him.

“Johnston was named in the Best FIFA Men’s XI last year, so this is probably no surprise and I’d expect more suitors to emerge from the Premier League and across Europe in the summer.”

    Celtic’s Johnston enjoyed incredible 2024

It’s absolutely no surprise to hear Alistair Johnston is on the transfer shortlists of two Premier League clubs and potentially other sides across Europe.

The 26-year-old was magnificent last year as he picked up three major trophies with Celtic, which included a double at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

He then won the Premier Sports Cup final against Rangers in December to complete the set before the year was out.

Moreover, Johnston notched 12 assists across all competitions in 2024 as he beat the likes of Matt O’Riley, James Forrest and fellow full-back Greg Taylor.

Only Nicolas Kuhn provided more assists for Celtic last year with 14, so having just two less as a right-back is quite remarkable.

In the summer, Johnston was named in the Copa America’s 2024 team of the tournament as Canada reached the semi-final stage against eventual winners Argentina.

And as mentioned by Ornstein, Johnston received worldwide recognition when he was named as a nominee for FIFA’s best XI of the year.

Brighton attackers Julio Enciso and Mark O’Mahony have injury concerns for their loan clubs Ipswich Town and Portsmouth.

Enciso sustained a knee injury during the first half of Ipswich’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa and now looks set for around four weeks on the sidelines.

“He’s had some scans,” said Town boss Kieran McKenna on Enciso. “Thankfully there was no new significant damage.

“It’s mostly going to need a period to settle down. Quite how long that is we’re not exactly sure. Hopefully, we’ll get him back as soon as possible.”

In Enciso’s absence, lowly Ipswich suffered a hefty 4-1 home defeat to Tottenham last weekend and will hope to kick-start their push to avoid the drop at Manchester United tonight, before their FA Cup fifth-round clash at Nottingham Forest on Monday.

Enciso has made three Premier League appearances so far for the Tractor Boys following his January loan move.

Meanwhile, O’Mahony recently returned after a lengthy knee issue and scored during Portsmouth’s 2-0 Championship win at Oxford United but then missed last Saturday’s 2-1 home victory against QPR with a fresh groin problem.

Pompey’s head coach John Mousinho told our sister title The News: “Mark just felt his groin slightly in training on Friday, I don’t think it’s too bad.

“It’s not quite as bad as some of the others on initial assessment. Mark not being included against QPR wasn’t a precaution, because I don’t think he was ready to play. It’s one where we’re just not ready to push him through it.”

O’Mahony joined Portsmouth last summer on a season loan but missed 15 Championship matches due to injury. The 20-year-old has made 11 appearances in total for Mousinho’s team with four goals in all competitions.

Portsmouth are 17th in the table and are next in action on March 1 at Luton Town.

  • Manchester United v Ipswich Town: Kieran McKenna’s pre-match thoughts

Manchester United v Ipswich Town: Kieran McKenna’s pre-match thoughts

Ipswich Town take on Manchester United, at Old Trafford, in a Premier League match tonight (7.30pm ko). Here’s what manager Kieran McKenna had to say ahead of returning to his former club.

A: We’ve got a great game to look forward to on Wednesday, so there’s a great energy around the training ground today. Everyone’s really excited to go to Old Trafford and play against Manchester United.

It’s a standout one in the calendar for sure. This is a stadium that many of us, having grown up watching football, will be inspired by. For quite a few of our players, it’ll be the first time that they’ve played at Old Trafford and a game like this doesn’t come around 10 times in every career.

The opportunity to go and compete there in a league game is fantastic for the football club, for the group of players and for the staff. We’re all really excited for iWe played them in the manager’s (Ruben Amorim) first game (a 1-1 draw at Portman Road in November), so that’s our clearest reference. There were some things that were good in that game for us, while they showed their quality in some moments as well.

Of course, I know quite a few of the players on a more detailed level (having been assistant manager at Manchester United from 2018-2021). Our players know pretty much all their players very, very well. We know that it’s going to be a big challenge because I’m sure they’re going to try and finish the season strongly.t.

We played them in the manager’s (Ruben Amorim) first game (a 1-1 draw at Portman Road in November), so that’s our clearest reference. There were some things that were good in that game for us, while they showed their quality in some moments as well.

Our players know pretty much all their players very, very well. We know that it’s going to be a big challenge because I’m sure they’re going to try and finish the season strongly.

If there was one simple reason to improve their home form, I’m pretty sure the last manager or this current manager would have addressed it. I’m sure they’re trying to find solutions. The people closest to it will have the best opinion.

They’re going to be desperate to get a win on Wednesday night. We’re going to be desperate to go there and get some points as well. So, you know, should make for a really competitive match.

: Probably PSG away (when United recovered from a 2-0 home defeat in the first leg to win 3-1 and reach the Champions League quarter-finals in 2019). I think that was pretty special for anyone who was involved in that one.

Working at the highest, highest level of the game at that stage, at the very top end of the Premier League and the latter stages of the Champions League, was an opportunity that not many people get in their careers.

Look at the Premier League, international and Champions League experience that they’re going to have on the pitch. It would be foolish of us to go there expecting anything other than a big, big challenge and a really tough game. I think that’s what we’re going to get.

We will go there with humility, knowing that we’re playing against some world-class players in their home stadium, but also with the confidence to know that we’ve picked up some big results away from home. We played well against Man Utd in the first game (a 1-1 home draw at Portman Road) and we’ll go there to try and impose ourselves on as much of the game as we can.

  • Kieran McKenna shares his greatest memory at Manchester United, one win under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was ‘pretty special’

Kieran McKenna shares his greatest memory at Manchester United, one win under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was ‘pretty special’

Manchester United welcome Ipswich Town to Old Trafford on Wednesday night with boss Kieran McKenna making a return to the club.

The dust is just about settling on Manchester United’s 2-2 draw at Everton and Ruben Amorim is now preparing for another big game.

United were dreadful in the first half at Goodison Park but rallied in the second half to secure a 2-2 draw.

Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte dragged United out of a whole and Amorim is now preparing to face Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys are in a real relegation battle and this is the kind of game United would expect to win.

Yet having struggled past Leicester City in the FA Cup and Southampton in the Premier League across recent weeks, this is no sure thing.

Kieran McKenna on his best night at Manchester United

The game sees Kieran McKenna return to face United.

The Ipswich boss worked under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Michael Carrick at United before becoming Ipswich boss in 2021.

McKenna earned interest from United last summer with Ineos considering him as a replacement for Erik ten Hag.

Guiding Ipswich to back-to-back promotions saw McKenna become one of the hottest coaching properties in the country.

McKenna stayed with Ipswich but keeping them afloat in the Premier League was always going to be a big ask after such a meteoric rise.

The Northern Irishman has now reflected on his time at United and named his greatest memory from his Old Trafford days.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, McKenna noted that the 2019 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain was a ‘pretty special’ occasion.

United were 2-0 down from the first leg but won 3-1 in Paris to complete a remarkable come back, with Marcus Rashford scoring an injury-time penalty.

That night feels like a lifetime ago given the struggles United have endured since, but it clearly lives on strongly for McKenna.

Kieran McKenna on his Manchester United inspiration

McKenna was also asked who his biggest inspiration at United having worked under so many managers.

McKenna noted that his ‘deepest connection’ was with Solskjaer having worked under him for the longest period.

However, the biggest inspiration for McKenna was actually Carrick, who stepped up from the coaching staff to take interim charge of United following Solskjaer’s exit.

Carrick is now in charge at Middlesbrough but is feeling the heat after a testing run of form.

McKenna clearly appreciates Carrick’s work though and paid tribute to him ahead of Wednesday’s clash.

Axel Tuanzebe has caught the eye for Ipswich at times this season with the defender also set for a return to Old Trafford.

The former United defender was suspended against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday but will now be ready for a return.

  • Where is the top-paid player from ten years ago at Ipswich Town now?

Where is the top-paid player from ten years ago at Ipswich Town now?

Perhaps the most well-known accomplishment of Ipswich Town in the modern era is their incredible achievement of earning consecutive promotions to guarantee their place in the Premier League.

But before their spectacular exploits under Kieran McKenna’s leadership, the Tractor Boys were true Championship mainstays, and in 2019 they were relegated to League One.

One of the Tractor Boys’ most famous second-tier seasons occurred in 2014–15, before McKenna joined the team.

Under the leadership of former manager Mick McCarthy, the Suffolk team secured a play-off position.

Defenders Luke Chambers and Christophe Berra were the Tractor Boys’ joint-highest paid players ten seasons ago, based on Capology estimations.

Both players contributed equally to the success of the 2014–15 season, earning an estimated £10,000 each week, or £520,000 annually.

Despite giving up 54 goals and finishing with a goal differential of +18 from the 72 goals they scored, the Tractor Boys had a comparatively strong defense in the Championship that season. Goal differential ultimately proved to be a crucial component, as McCarthy’s team finished tied with Wolverhampton Wanderers in seventh place on the points.

Chambers and Berra, two former Tractor Boys defenders who are 39 and 40 years old, respectively, have also hung up their boots.

After initially joining Ipswich from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2012, Chambers will always be known as a veteran who played for the team for an incredible nine seasons.

After joining Colchester United before the 2021–2022 season, he played for the League Two team for two seasons before declaring his retirement in August 2023 at the age of 37.

Chambers will be most remembered for his time with the Tractor Boys, when he made an amazing 396 appearances over an unprecedented nine-season spell, even though he also played for teams like Northampton Town, Forest, and Colchester.

In appreciation of his accomplishments while playing in the Championship, League One, and League Two, Chambers received the Sir Tom Finney Award at the 2024 EFL Awards.

After playing for Hearts and Raith Rovers in his home country of Scotland, Berra, who played for the Tractor Boys for four seasons from 2013–14–2016–17, retired from competition in 2022.

The former center-half joined Rovers as a coach right away after retiring, and by January 2023, he was hired as Livingston’s first team coach to work with David Martindale.

However, he left the then-Scottish Premiership team at the end of the 2022–2023 season before spending some time as the interim coach of Huntsville City, an Alabama-based MLS Next Pro team.

0 duels won: McKenna must axe Ipswich dud who can’t cut it in the PL

Ipswich Town’s woes on their own patch continue on as Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur ran out resounding 4-1 victors over the dejected Tractor Boys on Saturday.

Indeed, Kieran McKenna’s men have only won one Premier League clash all season long at Portman Road, with this defeat, in particular, pushing them deeper into the relegation mire off the back of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ big win on their travels to AFC Bournemouth.

Now, the Suffolk underdogs are five points off Wolves who occupy that golden 17th spot in the division, but there were some positives for McKenna to hold onto come full-time, despite the grim reality of another home loss.

    Ipswich’s biggest positives vs Spurs

Ipswich actually finished the contest with more shots on goal – with 17 to Spurs’ ten – alongside offering up more big chances at a slightly heftier three to the away side’s one, but all of that would ultimately amount to nothing.

Still, the likes of Omari Hutchinson would trudge off the pitch at the end pleased with their efforts, as the ex-Chelsea man got his side back into the contest with a beautifully executed strike deep into the hectic first 45 minutes.

Away from that moment of ecstasy, Hutchinson also amassed three key passes in the game to try and gift his side more of a way into the clash before an unfortunate late collapse handed Spurs all three points.

Jack Clarke stood out down the left flank too, with his assist providing Hutchinson the chance to beat Guglielmo Vicario, whilst Liam Delap was his usual energetic self minus a finish rippling the back of the net.

But, away from those lively performers up top, the Tractor Boys defence did look porous throughout, especially down the left-hand side of the pitch when Heung-min Son was twisting and turning this shaky Ipswich body for fun.

    Ipswich’s biggest underperformer vs Spurs

Whilst Jacob Greaves didn’t cover himself in much glory throughout, the ex-Hull City man at least lasted the full 90 minutes which can’t be said for another notable underperformer at the back.

Ben Godfrey, again, looked out of his depth pulling on Ipswich blue, with both of Spurs’ goals in the first half originating from Son constantly bamboozling the former Everton defender, before teeing up Brennan Johnson for a somewhat easy finish.

    Ben-Godfrey

Godfrey’s horror show first half resulted in McKenna hauling him off the pitch at the half-time interval, with the ropey 27-year-old failing to win a single tackle or duel, alongside also only registering six accurate passes when attempting to build attacks away from being routinely under the cosh.

This isn’t the only time this campaign that the ex-Toffees right-back has been hooked off by his new manager after an out-of-sorts defensive showing, with Godfrey surviving just an hour or so on the pitch when Manchester City came to town in late January, as Pep Guardiola’s rampant visitors ran out convincing 6-0 winners.

Godfrey’s numbers from two PL games for Ipswich

Looking at the table above, it does feel as if Godfrey can’t cut it against some of the Premier League’s elite attackers, with a worrying seven goals shipped from his 109 minutes of action versus City and Spurs, among other negative statistics.

McKenna will presumably bring Axel Tuanzebe back into the side when his suspension ceases to be, with his replacement not exactly banging the door down for most first-team chances moving forward.

If Ipswich are to stay up, they cannot afford more leaky showings, with the Atalanta loanee needing to be ditched now to give his team a fighting chance at survival.
