Ipswich Town and Leicester City are evaluating offers for a seven-goal Championship striker who is “ready” to depart.

    1. According to exclusive information obtained by TBR Football, Leicester City and Ipswich Town are considering a bid to sign Coventry City forward Haji Wright this month. Given that both Leicester and Ipswich are currently in the relegation zone, it is imperative that both teams find new motivation before the January transfer window closes.

Frank Lampard would be sorry to lose Wright, who cost £8 million to join Coventry from Turkish team Antalayspor in the summer of 2023. The Premier League has expressed interest in the 26-year-old after he scored ten goals in his debut season in England and has now scored seven goals from 15 appearances this season.

Wright, who paid £8 million to join Coventry from Turkish team Antalayspor in the summer of 2023, would be sad to go. The 26-year-old, who has seven goals from 15 games this season and ten goals in his first season in England, has drawn interest from the Premier League.

Ben Godfrey is expected to join Ipswich Town on loan from Atalanta.

After this afternoon’s match against Fulham, Ipswich Town is expected to reveal the loan signing of defender Ben Godfrey from the Italian team Atalanta.

The 26-year-old is expected to watch his new team from the directors’ box at Craven Cottage at 2:00 p.m. Godfrey joined Norwich City in 2016 after graduating from York City’s academy. Before joining Everton, he played for four years at Carrow Road. He remained in Merseyside until the previous summer. After joining Atalanta, the two-cap England international has had difficulty playing consistently in Bergamo.

Up to eight clubs reportedly shown interest in Godfrey, but Town manager Kieran McKenna impressed him, according to several sources.

Town captain backs ‘scapegoat’ keeper to ‘come back stronger’

Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy believes goalkeeper Aro Muric has been made a scapegoat in recent weeks following the performances that led to Christian Walton replacing him.

The Kosovo international signed for the Blues from Burnley for £8 million in July and started every Premier League game from his debut at Manchester City on the second weekend of the season until Monday’s victory over Chelsea.

However, displays have been mixed and calls to replace Muric with Walton began intensifying after a string of mistakes against the likes of Brentford, Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Muric has had the most errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season with five, two more than any other player in the division.

Morsy heaped praise on the patient Walton, who is expected to continue as the starting goalkeeper, and sympathised with Muric who he claims will recover strongly when he gets the opportunity.

“A clean sheet and a man of the match performance, it couldn’t have gone any better and it’s great for him,” Morsy said.

“We’ve had that over the last couple of seasons with the goalkeeping situation and goalkeepers getting injured and others stepping in.

“I don’t think people understand the saves Aro has made, I think he’s become a little bit of a scapegoat amongst the fanbase. That’s not really what we’re looking for because he’s made some massive saves and kept us in games.

“It feels like a small section at most clubs if results don’t go well they want to put it on one player and blame him. When he gets his chance again he’ll come back really strong.

“Now Walts is going to continue his second game, he’s been really supportive of Aro and they’ve got a good relationship. He’s been training well and that’s the mantra of the club, you never know when it’s going to be your opportunity and he took it with both hands.

“It was a great moment for him, his second game and he’ll be feeling really confident.”

Speaking further on Muric, whose clean sheet at Brighton and Hove Albion in September is widely viewed as one of the great goalkeeping performances, Morsy said: “He’s a popular member of the squad. He’s a really good guy and is working really hard to help and be the best he can.

“Being a goalie is probably the hardest position on the pitch, not only are you asked to make saves but playing with your feet as well. To get both of them to be exceptional you’re probably looking at the best goalie in the world.

“It’s a big challenge but he’s done great and he’ll come back stronger for sure.”

    Test at in-form Fulham awaits

Town travel to London to face Fulham on Sunday in what is their first match of 2025. The Blues are winless in their last eight meetings with the Cottagers but are yet to lose in their three Premier League meetings to date.

Marco Silva’s side are currently eighth in the table and enter this weekend’s clash off the back of a seven-game unbeaten streak that is currently bettered by only Liverpool and Arsenal.

“They’re a really good side,” Morsy said. “They’ve had some really good wins in the first half of the season and are doing well. They’ve got really good individual players, a physical and athletic team that are well coached.

“They’re a little bit of everything and are having a great season. But it’s up to us, our away form has been alright this season and we’re coming off the back of a big win so we have to believe and do our best to get something from the game.

“They’ve got good players all over. [Alex] Iwobi’s a really good player and is having a good season so we’ll have to pay him maximum respect. Antonee Robinson looks like the best left-back in the country at the minute so we’re going to have to do our best to try and nullify him.

“But they’ve got threats all over the pitch and are a really good team, so we’re going to have to be really organised. It’s going to have to be a real team effort doubling up and tripling up on players, that same hard work and humility against Chelsea and see where it takes us.”

Morsy captained United States international Robinson while the pair were together at Wigan Athletic, and the Town midfielder says the full-back will be a big threat at Craven Cottage this weekend.

He said: “He’s having a terrific season and he’s become one of the main attacking threats with seven assists. He’s flying so we’ll have to speak about it and get a plan to stop him because he’s having a brilliant season. I’m really happy for him.”

This weekend also marks the beginning of the second half of the season, with Fulham the first opposition the Blues have faced for a second time around.

The reverse fixture in August saw Town pick up their first Premier League point of the season, and Morsy believes his side were unfortunate not to claim more.

“It was a good game and we were probably a little bit unlucky not to have won,” the 33-year-old reflected. “It was a tough game against a proper Premier League team. But they’re at home now and are in great form so it will be a good game.”

Victory over Chelsea on Monday was a huge confidence boost for Kieran McKenna’s side, particularly when the calibre of the opposition includes some of the league’s most in-form players such as Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Moises Caicedo.

But Morsy knows the importance of staying grounded and immediately switching the focus to the matches ahead instead of spending too much time basking in the glory of results prior.

He said: “You have a day off after the win and when you come back to the training ground it’s important to focus on the next steps. It’s not about talking about the Chelsea win every day, you enjoy it and debrief it and that’s that.

“You then continue the dialogue of how we’re going to get better and how we’re going to beat Fulham. We know the position we are in the division so we won’t be getting too high off any win.

“You can go in full of confidence thinking it’s going to be okay and you’ll be humbled pretty fast. We’ve got to go in and approach it as a really tough game, which it is because they’re a really good side.

“Off the back of the win we know on our day we’re capable of beating anyone. As usual in a Premier League game you need a mixture of a lot of things, but the main thing is how hard we can work, the effort and showcase the best of ourselves. We’ll see if it’s enough to get anything from the game.”

Morsy has started 17 of the Blues’ 19 league fixtures so far this season, only missing out at Brentford through a minor hamstring injury and against Arsenal through suspension.

The Egypt international says the fight for places in the heart of Town’s midfield is a testament to the quality of players at McKenna’s disposal, which include Kalvin Phillips, Jens Cajuste, Jack Taylor and Massimo Luongo.

“It’s the strongest it’s been since I’ve been at the club by far, only two players can play and everyone’s competing,” Morsy said.

“That’s going to be a really big strength of ours for the second half of the season because football is never straight forward with injuries, suspensions and form, so we need to keep that part of the team firing and that will help the team.”

Cajuste in particular has become one of the first names on the team sheet over the last few months having grown into the season following his arrival on loan from Italian giants Napoli in August, and Morsy has been particularly pleased with the Sweden international’s performances.

He said: “I’ve been really impressed. He’s getting better every week and he’s had some outstanding games. He’s come from a different country so he’s adapting to a new culture and a new way of football but I think he’s done brilliantly well.

“He’s a great kid, he keeps improving and hopefully he can keep getting better.

“He’s growing and his confidence is getting better all the time and there’s some excellent coaches here to help him get better. He’s added more bits to his game and you can see he’s really enjoying it.

“A lot of the time if you’re really enjoying your football you are going to play your best, so long may that continue.

“I’ve always looked at any midfielder I’ve played with or on the training ground and there’s always things you can take. The slight nuances of maybe how they move or how they receive the ball or whatever it may be.

“It’s always a learning curve, you can always learn from good players and it’s great to have him here.”

Another player who has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water is swashbuckling centre-forward Liam Delap.

The striker’s latest display against Chelsea has taken him to seven goals and two assists in the Premier League this season.

Of Delap, Morsy said: “He’s had a brilliant first half of the season. His parents have raised him really well – he’s really grounded, really humble, works hard, takes advice and he’s doing great.

“From the start of the season to now he’s improving all the time. He’s such a goal threat, he’s getting better and better and that’s the form we’re going to need him in.”

Morsy received his fifth booking of the season against Newcastle last month which ruled him out of the Christmas trip to the Emirates Stadium.

On his suspension, he added: “There’s always that element of the rest side, especially with games coming up thick and fast but I’m experienced enough to know how to deal with those.

“In the younger years you might be disappointed but as you get older you realise it’s part of the game. It’s just to stay focused, don’t take your eye off the ball and be ready

“You have Arsenal and Chelsea coming up, it’s easy to not be ready but the most important thing is your preparation.”

‘Goodbye’ – Player opts out of match as Ipswich Town press to sign him – Sport Witness

Since Ben Godfrey moved to Atalanta from Everton he’s faced an ongoing, and clearly uphill, battle to work his way into Gian Piero Gasperini’s system.

The Atalanta manager has a rather unique approach and it’s often difficult for new signings to adapt to his demands. For Godfrey it was especially so.

That’s seen endless transfer claims which started just weeks into his time with La Dea, and after most of the bottom half of the Premier League being linked it’s Ipswich Town which looks like his next destination.

Saturday’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport reports ‘Godfrey says goodbye’. It’s explained he’s stayed at home after Atalanta travelled to the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia.

The reason is to sort out his future, with Ipswich Town now ‘pressing’ to get a deal over the line. Gazzetta dello Sport report multiple Premier League clubs remains interested, but it’s Ipswich who are the most concrete option right now.

Things are expected to move quickly, with developments in the next few hours possible.

On December 17th, TuttoMercatoWeb reported West Ham United and Ipswich Town had made contacts to sign Middlesbrough star Emmanuel Latte Lath.

The 25-year-old’s agent, Matthias Veneroso, has opened the door for his client to leave Middlesbrough in January.

West Ham and Ipswich Town’s interest in the striker is pointed out by 225 Foot, who then provide their own updates on this case.

Kieran McKenna’s side have taken further steps to try and get ahead of the Hammers by making an offer to the Ivory Coast international. The report provides no details of Ipswich Town’s offer for the Middlesbrough man.

He scored nine goals and registered two assists from 23 Championship games and his performances has brought interest.

Emmanuel Latte Lath would like to join a club that can offer him a ‘better challenge’ than the one offered by Ipswich Town, who are currently in the relegation zone. West Ham could offer what he’s looking for, but it’s not clear if the Ivorian is open to joining them.

The frontman’s deal lasts until 2027, with an option for another year, and 225 Foot say he won’t stay at Middlesbrough for long.

Liam Delap has been a revelation for Ipswich Town this season

In his latest monthly column, American expat, PR professional and Ipswich Town fan James Wall shares his thoughts on the Blues from across the pond….

The festive period is always a time for family, feasting, and, of course, football.

As is my annual tradition, I descended upon my family in Bury St. Edmunds over Christmas, armed with mince pies, plenty of wine and a desperate hope of squeezing in an Ipswich Town match.

This year I was bringing plenty of family with me from the States – seven of us in all.

James Wall, far left, with Anthony and Galder and a family friend at Portman Road

First to arrive after me was my partner and her two boys, 16 and 18. You may remember the youngest, Galder, from my first ever EADT column covering our first match in the Championship last year (Sunderland away).

It was back in the summer of 2023, and we were driving back from our holiday on the New Jersey Shore.

FULL INTERVIEW: Lawson talks Red Bull…

    ‘I don’t want to be celebrated!’ |…

    ‘Don’t grow up!’ | Bobby George’s…

Why Lewis-Skelly is shining for Arsenal

On the drive I was desperately trying to get Galder – who was next to me in the front seat – to keep me updated on the score. He, however, had zero interest in keeping his mum’s partner informed and kept on playing his video game.

Now, I’m a lifelong Tractor Boy, born and bred in the shadow of Portman Road (well, Orford isn’t that far). My partner’s boys, however, are of course a different story.

The eldest, Anthony, a budding physicist at university in Colorado, seems more concerned with the intricacies of eye rolling than the offside rule. But he seemed excited as we boarded the train from Liverpool Street to watch Ipswich vs Toon.

Galder, however, is a powerful lacrosse player with a similar attitude and physique to Liam Delap – strong, powerful and aggressive on the field of play. He loves sports and appeared genuinely thrilled to be watching his first professional soccer game in Europe.

Armed with newly bought scarves from the Town shop, I dragged them both through the turnstiles into the hallowed ground of Portman Road. The atmosphere was, as usual, electric, a sea of blue and white swirling around us.

James and co watched Town lose to Newcastle just before Christmas

James and co watched Town lose to Newcastle just before Christmas

The boys, initially apprehensive given that our tickets didn’t work the first time we tried to get in, were soon captivated by the spectacle.

The chants, the passion, the thunderous tackles, the sheer scale of the occasion – it was all utterly mesmerizing to these football newbies from America.

Galder was particularly taken by the fact that several oversized Newcastle fans were dancing topless in the stands – he took several videos on his phone for posterity!

Alas, the football itself was a different story. Newcastle, in a rampant mood, tore us apart, inflicting a humiliating 4-0 defeat on home soil. My partner’s boys, bless their innocent hearts, were remarkably sanguine.

“It was still cool, James,” Galder professed, while Anthony surprisingly later declared on the way home to Washington DC that the game was the highlight of his trip across the pond.

This wasn’t the attitude of the Portman Road regulars. Leaving the ground later that afternoon the air was thick with despondency.

Blues fans have been brilliant again this season

Blues fans have been brilliant again this season

Relegation talk was rife amongst the dejected Ipswich fans. “We’re doomed,” one supporter lamented on the train back to London, shaking his head. “Back to the Championship, I reckon.”

Fast forward a week, and the mood couldn’t have been more different. I was flying home, following the Chelsea game via the two WhatsApp groups dedicated to Ipswich Town of which I’m a member.

Our boys in blue, spurred on by a rampant Liam Delap (more on him later), had stunned Chelsea 2-0 at Portman Road. The Suffolk air appeared thick with the sweet scent of optimism.

“We might just do it!” a jubilant fan proclaimed via the Blue Army WhatsApp group.

The Newcastle game, now a distant memory, seemed to belong to a different era. Suddenly, survival seemed not just possible, but probable.

And while the 4-0 drubbing at home had initially felt like a crushing blow, perhaps, in a strange way, it had served as a wake-up call.

Speaking of wake-up calls, Galder has undergone a remarkable transformation. The boy who couldn’t care less about football two summers ago now proudly sports an Ipswich scarf and has a poster adorning his bedroom wall.

I, the unwitting evangelist, have successfully converted a disciple.

    Liam Delap dominated Chelsea

    Liam Delap dominated Chelsea

Liam Delap has been a revelation this season. His powerful runs, commanding finishing, and sheer physicality have terrorised defenses across the league.

His performance against Chelsea was nothing short of dominant.

Delap’s absence against Newcastle was keenly felt, a glaring hole in the Ipswich attack. He is Ipswich’s talisman this season.

Surely, Thomas Tuchel has eyes on Delap for a possible England squad inclusion.

So, there you have it. A tale of two matches, two very different emotions, and one very unexpected conversion.

As the season tilts past the halfway point, our heroes face a thrilling battle for survival in the Premier League.

One thing is certain: I, for one, will be glued to my laptop and phone, hoping against hope that the Tractor Boys can defy the odds and remain in the top flight.

And who knows, perhaps next year, I’ll be taking Galder and Anthony back to another Premier League match.

A man can dream, can’t he?

A happy and prosperous New Year to all my fellow Town fans in Suffolk and abroad.

Kieran McKenna makes Pochettino comparison as he praises Maresca for “really good job”

Chelsea take on Ipswich on Monday night in their final game of 2024 and Kieran McKenna has been full of praise for Enzo Maresca in the build-up.

Maresca replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the summer and has made a brilliant start to the season, with the Blues currently third in the league just a point behind Arsenal in second.

The Boxing Day defeat to Fulham was just their third of the campaign and the Blues remain well on track to qualify for the Champions League.

McKenna full of praise for Maresca

The Blues head to Portman Road for the first time since 2002 looking to return to winning ways having failed to win either of their last two games.

Chelsea will have to be aware of the threat of Liam Delap, who is a transfer target for the Blues, with Maresca full of praise for the striker pre-game.

Enzo Maresca on the touchline in the win over Shamrock Rovers.

Maresca has made a good start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca knows his opposite number well having come up against McKenna in the Championship last season, and the Ipswich boss was full of praise for the job the Italian has done so far.

“Enzo’s done a really good job coaching them and getting them into the structure that he likes and turning them into a good team,” he said as cited by TWTD.

“I have to say, to be fair, the second half of last season, Mauricio had really good results there as well and you could see the talent that was there, you could see the talent was coming through, and they had really good results in the second half of last season.

Former Hull City favourite Liam Delap has the potential to go on and become a regular at senior level for England, according to Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.

Delap was a huge hit at City last season when he spent the season on loan with the Tigers, scoring eight goals in 32 games during his spell from Manchester City.

His three-month absence in the early part of 2024 was one of the key reasons the Tigers missed out on the Championship play-offs under former boss Liam Rosenior, only returning in the final month of the campaign after a severe knee injury.

City tried hard to sign Delap during the summer but ultimately were unable to compete with the lure of the Premier League, and the 21-year-old forward went on to join newboys Ipswich Town in a deal worth around £20m.

Since going to the Premier League, Delap has caught the eye despite the Tractor Boys’ struggles, netting six times and showing why he was such a focal point in the Black and Amber last term, and in turn, becoming such a favourite on the terraces.

Delap made his England Under-21 debut during his loan stint at City and has gone on to play ten times for the youngsters, having played for the Three Lions at every age group, but has now been backed to make the step up to senior level under Thomas Tuchel.

“Liam is a fantastic player, and also for his age,” Maresca said, having worked with the powerful forward at the Etihad Stadium, speaking ahead of Monday’s trip to Portman Road. “I think we spent one year together, and he scored [about] 22 to 24 goals. He is a very good striker.

“England have many good players, many good strikers [but] he’s working hard off the ball and on the ball, understands the game and can score goals. I think he can be an important player for England.”

Imagine him & Delap: Ipswich could sign “world-class” Burns upgrade for £0

Kieran McKenna will be well aware that if his Ipswich Town side want to stay in the Premier League past this season they cannot be turned over like they did against Newcastle United on a regular basis.

The 4-0 loss the rampant Magpies handed to the Tractor Boys is the most depressing defeat the Suffolk side have had to endure since promotion, as Arijanet Muric’s poor showings continued in-between the sticks across what was a dismal performance overall from every Ipswich shirt.

Despite such a poor offering from the defenders in that sobering defeat, transfer rumours are beginning to circulate that Ipswich could be in the market for some reinforcements in attack this January.

    Ipswich looking at “world-class” forward

As per reports from Spain last weekend, the relegation candidates are interested in signing Hakim Ziyech next month, with his contract potentially being torn up in January to allow him to move on from Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Ziyech will be well known to fans of the Premier League for his stuttering spell at Chelsea, but he could be a man reborn if he moves back to England under McKenna’s fresh management, with Mason Mount even boldly describing the attacking midfielder as “world-class” when the pair were together at Stamford Bridge.

    hakim-ziyech-chelsea-premier-league

This undoubtedly would be a coup for the Suffolk side to pull off, with McKenna potentially winning himself another entertaining attacking option to play alongside Liam Delap, alongside also gaining another right winger that would be an upgrade on a waning Wes Burns.

    What Ziyech could offer Ipswich

The Moroccan isn’t that fondly remembered at Chelsea, but he did show glimpses of his quality playing in West London that once made him a £33.3m buy from Ajax.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Overall, Ziyech picked up six goals and nine assists for the Blues in Premier League action alone, with McKenna not turning his nose up whatsoever at those numbers when you consider the dwindling returns of some Ipswich forwards this season away from a lethal Delap.

As can be seen by glancing at the table above, the ex-Manchester City ace is way out in front as Ipswich’s most potent player with a combined seven goals and assists for his team this season, with no right wingers even making the cut.

Burns, although he was key to Ipswich winning promotion last season, has notably struggled with the step-up in quality, with just one meagre goal contribution tallied up from his sparing game-time.

    Hakim Ziyech for Chelsea

Ziyech could well be the answer to Ipswich’s woes down the right channel, therefore, with McKenna managing to work his magic with former Chelsea players in attack in the past, as seen in him getting 12 goals and seven assists out of Omari Hutchinson who could well link up nicely with the daring free agent.

Amassing some incredible numbers in the Champions League too when on blistering form with Ajax, with a stunning ten goals and 11 assists tallied up in Europe’s elite competition, Ipswich would be fools not to try and win the 31-year-old if his contract in Turkey is ripped up.

Capable on his day of scoring audacious efforts like the one above, it remains to be seen whether Ziyech would be up for the slog of a relegation battle, as the Tractor Boys attempt to secure some statement buys to help them stay afloat in the top flight.
