Liverpool may have seen their chances of landing Marc Guehi dented this month according to a report from the BBC.
The Marc Guehi saga has taken another turn this month as the defender ticks toward the final months of his contract at Crystal Palace.
When a £35 million move to Anfield seemed on the brink of completion on deadline day last summer, Liverpool were left stunned as Palace chairman Steve Parish dramatically pulled out of the deal at the last moment, blaming the club’s failure to line up a replacement.
Since then, Eagles boss Oliver Glasner has made it clear that Guehi will not be extending his contract at Selhurst Park, opening the door for Liverpool to potentially land him on a free transfer next summer.
In that scenario, however, the balance of power shifts sharply between English clubs and overseas giants, with the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich enjoying a clear advantage, as FIFA rules allow foreign sides to begin pre-contract talks with Guehi from January onward.
However, it now seems are that a domestic rival in Manchester City could now swoop in.
The BBC has reported that Manchester City are now considering an attempt to sign Marc Guehi this month, with Sami Mokbel reporting:
“Manchester City are emerging as contenders to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi this month.”
“BBC Sport understands City are exploring a move for the England centre-back in the wake of defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias suffering injuries in the draw against Chelsea on Sunday.”
Mokbel added that while both Liverpool and City are keen on taking Guehi on a free at the end of the season, Palace would be open to sale this winter to ensure that they get even a token fee for the soon-to-be free agent:
“The Anfield club remain heavily interested in Guehi and it now remains to be seen if they are prepared to bring their plans to sign the player on a free transfer this summer.”
“City and Liverpool are both interested in taking Guehi on a free transfer at the end of the season.”
“It is understood Palace would consider selling Guehi this month to avoid the scenario of losing their captain for nothing come the end of the season.”
