Surviving or thriving? Grizzlies living on the edge during four-game winning streak

Ja Morant wouldn’t call it an ugly win. Scotty Pippen Jr. said the Memphis Grizzlies played good.

The end result was a Wednesday night win against the Utah Jazz, but the Grizzlies once again found themselves in a position where they appeared to be playing with their food.

The Grizzlies built a 19-point lead in the first half against Utah, the Western Conference’s worst team. Utah (15-51) completely erased that deficit and held a one-point lead in the final minute on Wednesday.

Behind late-game heroics from Morant and Luke Kennard, the Grizzlies (42-24) escaped with a 122-115 win. Kennard led the Grizzlies with 30 points and made seven 3-pointers.

A win is a win, but Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins often talks about monitoring the way the team plays more so than sheer results. Memphis is a team with championship goals, so games against opponents like Utah are viewed through a different lens.

“I’m aware of our inability right now to stretch leads, but it’s kind of the nature of the season right now,” Jenkins said. “Got to give credit to the four teams that we played. Everyone is playing for different reasons, but these guys are coming out and playing extremely hard.”

    Ja Morant answers the call

A recent influx of close games has meant several moments for Ja Morant to activate his clutch badge.

Morant has done just that, serving as the closer over the course of the Grizzlies’ four-game winning streak. His latest dagger came with the Grizzlies leading by two and the shot clock running down on Wednesday. Morant made a 3-pointer with 12.4 seconds remaining to put the nail in the coffin.

The Grizzlies point guard pulled out his signature “call 12” celebration. He finished the game with 28 points and seven assists.

Morant, who tends to speak openly when he feels the Grizzlies are struggling, didn’t chalk up the recent play to just surviving against teams Memphis expects to beat.

“I feel like we disrespect a lot of guys in this league just because of their team record,” Morant said. “They’re still NBA players. They’re here for a reason.”

    A defensive focus

Memphis was without Jaren Jackson Jr. and Santi Aldama, but Jenkins still played 11 players. That in part was due to the inconsistency on the defensive end.

Memphis led by 14 points at halftime before surrendering 36 points in the third quarter and leading by four at the end of that period.

Players have often talked about the intensity and urgency needing to be more consistent. After Monday’s win against the Phoenix Suns, Morant said it is something the Grizzlies are still searching for.

GG Jackson, for example, is a player Memphis is challenging to become one of its better wing defenders. At 6-foot-9, Jackson has the size and athleticism to become a defensive force.

On Wednesday, Jackson’s defensive mistakes led to Jenkins urging him to play better.

“To his credit, he understood what his mistakes were,” Jenkins said. “I love that he recognized it, and he’s going to be better from it.”

    Tall task on Friday

Whether Memphis is surviving or thriving during its current four-game win streak will be answered on Friday. The Grizzlies will play against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have the NBA’s best record and a 15-game win streak.

Long defensive lapses won’t lead to good results against teams like the Cavs, and that’s something Memphis understands.

“A win is a win, but you got to be real with yourself,” Desmond Bane said. “We didn’t play our best basketball. I felt like we played with the game a little bit, which, you know, championship teams don’t do. It’s just about stacking habits and competing for 48 minutes.”

Mavs’ 1st Ever Female Scout Puts Name As Next Wisconsin Badgers Women’s Basketball Coach – ‘My Pride & Passion For My Alma Mater Runs Deep’

The Wisconsin Badgers women’s basketball are currently without a head coach after the resignation of Marisa Moseley who has been with the team since 2021. Her resignation comes at the heels of a failed season and controversy on how she managed the players.

It might not be vacated for long as the school is already searching for a replacement while some experienced coaches put forward their names for the job.

University of Wisconsin-Madison might want to take a look at their very own Tamara Moore who took to X to express her desire to inherit the job left by Moseley who is regarded as a trailblazer in the field.

Her résumé got even more stacked after that as she found her way in the National Basketball Association when she was hired as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics 2022 Summer League.

Her latest achievement is becoming the first ever female scout of 2024 NBA finalist Dallas Mavericks.

On Wednesday night, the New York Knicks beat the Portland Trail Blazers (in overtime) by a score of 114-113.

Mikal Bridges nailed the game-winning shot as time expired.

Via The New York Knicks: “MIKAL BRIDGES, ARE YOU SERIOUS!!?

After the game, Jalen Brunson (who did not play) sent out a post on X.

There were over 4,000 likes and 40,000 impressions in less than 25 minutes.

Bridges finished the win with 33 points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block while shooting 13/21 from the field and 2/4 from the three-point range in 41 minutes of playing time.

With the win, the Knicks improved to 43-23 in 66 games, which has them as the third seed in the Eastern Conference.

They are in the middle of a three-game winning streak.

Following the Trail Blazers, the Knicks will play their next game on Saturday night when they visit Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors.

On the road, they are 22-12 in 34 games away from Madison Square Garden.

Brunson is in the middle of another fantastic season with averages of 26.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 49.0% from the field and 38.4% from the three-point range in 61 games.

He has missed the last three with an injury.

  • Mikal Bridges Achieves Career-First Milestone During Knicks-Trail Blazers

Mikal Bridges Achieves Career-First Milestone During Knicks-Trail Blazers

The New York Knicks entered Wednesday night’s road matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers looking to get their season back on track.

New York had dropped three of their previous four games entering Wednesday’s game and they were in desperate need of building off Monday’s dominant victory over the Sacramento Kings.

That is exactly what the Knicks did, securing a hard-fought 114-113 overtime victory over the Trail Blazers, thanks to a game-winning, buzzer-beater three-pointer by Mikal Bridges.

This was Bridges’ first career game-winning buzzer-beater, and it came at the perfect time for the Knicks.

Bridges led the way for the Knicks as he recorded 33 points, four rebounds and four assists, including the game-winning three.

OG Anunoby added 23 points and seven rebounds of his own while Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

This was a massive victory for the Knicks as they now sit just four and a half games behind the Boston Celtics for the second seed in the Eastern Conference standings thanks to Boston’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.

It was also a great sign for Bridges who had been struggling recently, so the Knicks hope that his game winner will give him a boost for the rest of the season with the playoffs right around the corner.

Of course, Bridges has been a key part of the Knicks’ success this season as he is averaging 17.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 49.2% from the field and 34.9% from three.

Despite this, he has struggled at times this season, but Bridges taking over Wednesday’s game was a good sign for New York, especially with Jalen Brunson sidelined for at least another week due to an ankle injury.

Bridges and the Knicks will now look to push their winning streak to three games on Saturday when they take on the red-hot Golden State Warriors.

Lewis Hamilton confirmed his move to Ferrari at the beginning of 2024, and come the 2025 Formula 1 season, joined Fred Vasseur and Charles Leclerc in the Italian team. Now, as he celebrates his first season with the Scuderia, he’s broken the internet with a post on Instagram.

“I remember getting off the phone and, like, almost shaking,” the Briton said when his move was confirmed in his interview with TIME. Ferrari is a dream he didn’t expect to come true, but this Friday, he will sit behind their 2025 challenger for the first time for Free Practice in Australia. In the same interview, he revealed his dream car: the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder.

    “That’s the ultimate retirement car.

“I can just see myself with Roscoe [his pet bulldog], him with a scarf and goggles in the seat next to me, driving down the PCH.”

Today, in an Instagram post from the seven-time world champion, he ticked off one more dream.

“No better way to start the season than by fulfilling another dream,” he posted in the caption.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off has been one of my favourite movies since I was a kid. This is to pay homage to the iconic film and to celebrate my first season with Ferrari. It definitely took a lot of cutting edge tech, production and planning to get right. Had to get the exact car too … it’s been a dream car since seeing the movie.

In just 5 hours, the video, that was created by Hamilton’s film and movie production company, Dawn Apollo Films, had received over 550,000 likes. This comes as no surprise, with the video showing the former Mercedes driver jumping the classic Ferrari through the streets of Chicago. Riding shotgun is none other than Edward Norton, the actor known for his roles in The Incredible Hulk, The Italian Job, and Fight Club.

Talking ahead of the Grand Prix this weekend, Vasseur is excited for the season to start in Australia.

“The wait is finally over and we’re ready to take to the track for the first race of the season,” he says. “One could say we’re stepping back in time, as it’s been a few years since Australia hosted the opening round. The Albert Park street circuit is not particularly representative of what the rest of the year has in store, but we did well there last year.

“Naturally, there are plenty of unknowns and we are keen to find out what the hierarchy will be, especially as the results of the Bahrain test were very difficult to read. Everyone, including the drivers has worked hard all winter in the factory in Maranello.  Charles has also pushed harder than ever in the gym, and Lewis has made a great effort to assimilate with the team as quickly as possible.

“I believe we have everything in place to do well. As always, we will concentrate on ourselves this week, aware that this is just the start of a very long season.

“A week ago, we were given a wonderful welcome by a huge crowd of our tifosi in Milan and now, in Melbourne, we will be aiming to give all our fans further reason to be proud of us.”

  • Struggles Continue for Jamaica as Noah Lyles’ Arch-Rival Kishane Thompson Announces Heartbreaking Update

Struggles Continue for Jamaica as Noah Lyles’ Arch-Rival Kishane Thompson Announces Heartbreaking Update

The Paris Olympics 100m final ended in pure drama—Kishane Thompson and Noah Lyles diving at the line, their bodies perfectly aligned in a breathtaking photo finish. The stadium held its breath as the scoreboard flickered, revealing Noah Lyles as the winner by mere thousandths of a second.

For Thompson, who had marched into the Games as the fastest 100m athlete of the year, this was a gut-wrenching blow. But Thompson didn’t want to sulk. “I am going to take it as what it is and move forward from here,” he said after taking his silver medal—one that, with just a fraction of a second more in his favor, could have gleamed gold. But move forward he did and that too in impressive fashion.

To start the season, Thompson stormed down the track at the Central Hurdles, Relays & Field Events Meet in Jamaica, clocking a jaw-dropping 6.48 seconds for the 60m dash—into a brutal -2.1 m/s headwind.

Then a week later, at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Astana, he clocked 6.56 seconds in the men’s 60m to continue his winning ways. This set him up perfectly for the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing as he looked to build for next year’s event in Tokyo. However, we might have to wait to see Thompson back in action.

On Monday, the World Athletics Hub posted on X, “Kishane Thompson & Tia Clayton are no long on the Road to Nanjing portal. They will not be attending the World Indoor Championships.” Based on the list released on the World Athletics portal, the Jamaican men’s 60m team comprises Rohan Watson and Nishion Ebanks, but Thompson’s name is absent.

    Article continues below this ad

After clocking his personal best to start the season in Kingston and having two wins to his name, this update will disappoint many fans. But Kishane’s absence in the Chinese metropolis Nanjing is a blow not only to him personally but also to the Jamaican track and field hopes of ending its drought at the World Indoor Championships.

Who clocked a faster time in the 60m dash at the Central Hurdles, Relays & Field Events Meet in Jamaica?

    Usain Bolt
    Kishane Thompson
    Noah Lyles
    Yohan Blake

It may be hard to believe, but the title list in the men’s 60m event at the World Athletics Indoor Championships has no Jamaican sprinter’s name. Yes, you heard it right! The title list never had the chance to grace the names of Jamaican greats like Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, and Yohan Blake. Usain and Blake didn’t compete in the World Athletics Indoor Championships while Powell had the chance to enter the list in 2016 but came second in the event.

With Thompson out of contention, the chances for Jamaica to finally have a male champion in the 60m at the World Indoor Championships have taken a hit. Rohan Watson did win the Jamaican national 100m title in 2023 and clocked a personal-best time of 6.50 seconds at the World Athletics Indoor Championships qualifier at GC Foster College but given Thompson’s form at the start of the season, Jamaican fans will be ruing his absence.

This move could be after careful deliberation by Thompson. After racking up two wins, the sprinter might want to give himself some time ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo this September. Thompson might well be eyeing his first major global title after narrowly missing out on the gold in Paris.

Meanwhile, Tia Clayton made her indoor debut with a swift 60m win at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Astana. She blazed to a new meeting record of 7.18s but her name is also missing from the portal ahead of the event in Nanjing. Her twin sister, Tina Clayton, however, will be competing.

Last year, Christian Coleman owned the World Athletics Indoor Championships, scorching the track in 6.41 seconds to claim the men’s 60m title. Right behind him, Noah Lyles was making waves, clocking 6.44 seconds—his best-ever indoor time. It was an electric duel, a battle of American sprint supremacy. But 2025 has been different!

We already know how Noah Lyles has fared this indoor season—his 6.62-second effort in Gainesville left questions hanging in the air. He remained 0.14 seconds slower than Kishane Thompson’s season best. And what about Coleman? The reigning champion? The king of the 60m dash? Silence as of now. He hasn’t even started his season yet. That meant the stage was set for a new name, a new force in the short sprint.

With Coleman absent and Noah struggling to match his best, the opportunity was wide open for Kishane to storm the World Athletics Indoor Championships and stamp his name in history. A golden chance to be crowned the fastest man indoors. But the chance seems to have taken a backseat now.

As for Noah Lyles, the Olympic gold medalist might be eyeing a different challenge soon.

Noah Lyles is looking at something else

“Allergies and asthma are like bad kids. They keep you up at night and want to jump on your chest all day, They never listen when you tell them to do something and always find something new to break,” Noah Lyles posted on X on February 19 this year.

The reigning Olympic champion’s chronic issues have caught him again. But Lyles has kept on appearing on his ‘Beyond The Records Podcast,’ creating headlines like nothing else. And in one of those headlines, he dropped a hint. A hint of competing in an event away from his trademark ones.

In the latest episode of Beyond The Records, Vernon Norwood came as the guest. Lyles and Rai Benjamin welcomed ‘The Unc’ with grace. But Vernon had something in his mind, some tricky ones. Like asking Lyles to compete in the men’s 400m event.

    Article continues below this ad

The 27-year-old Florida native took a few fractions of seconds only to answer“It will come one day.” Lyles has experience and even a medal in the men’s 4x400m indoor relay.

    Article continues below this ad

But are those enough to take the individual event seriously? Only he knows! But Kishane Thompson’s exit from the Nanjing World Athletics Indoor Championships might buy him some time to fulfill his wish.

  • LSU Basketball Begins SEC Tournament Play Wednesday

by Kent LoweNASHVILLE, Tennessee – The LSU men’s basketball team opens its SEC Tournament stand Wednesday night at 6 p.m. against a team it played just three games ago, the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The league teams have converged on this city again for its annual visit to Bridgestone Area for the championship tournament to conclude one of the SEC’s overall impressive basketball seasons.

The Tigers and Bulldogs will be the third of a first-ever four-game first day at the tournament now with all 16 teams taking part in the tournament. Teams seeded 9-16 will play on Wednesday with the winners facing the 5-8 seeds on Thursday before the top four squads enter the fray on quarterfinal Friday. A champion will be crowned on Sunday.

The “Voice” of the Tigers Chris Blair and former LSU head coach John Brady will be courtside for the broadcast on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge is the Guaranty Media flagship). Karl Ravech, Jimmy Dykes and Molly McGrath will have the call on the SEC Network television broadcast.

The Bulldogs are 20-11 overall and were 8-10 in the league. They finished in a four-way tie for ninth place with Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Georgia, but were named the 10th seed based on tiebreaker.

LSU is the 15th seed after a 14-17 regular season that saw LSU go 3-15 in the league.

The Tigers concluded preparations for the tournament with an afternoon workout at the Crockett Center for Athletic Excellence at Belmont University in Nashville before going to Bridgestone Arena for the 40-minute practice time allowed in the arena.

Of State, Coach Matt McMahon said, “We just faced them over in Starkville. We know (Josh) Hubbard put on a show there in the second half. We’ll have to figure out a way to contain him better. We have to try and figure out a way to be better on the glass and stay out of foul trouble with the limited bodies in our front court right now.”

The Tigers will again be without Vyctorius Miller (ankle) and Corey Chest (toe) for the tournament duration leaving LSU with just 10 players dressing out for Wednesday’s game.

One of the highlights for the Tigers this season has been the play of fourth-year senior Cam Carter, who enters the tournament averaging 16.5 points overall and 16.2 points in SEC play. Against the Bulldogs in his first return to Starkville on March 1 since leaving the team after the 2021-22 season, Carter had 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting with five three-pointers.

Coach McMahon talked about his play this season and what he remembers about this past year with him.

“I think you just focus in on some of the memories that you have with him only having an opportunity to coach them for year. By the numbers, he has had the best season of his career from a shooting standpoint. I think that’s a credit to the hard work that he put in this summer and really throughout the season. He’s always a guy that is in the gym every day. I think you’ll always remember the 7-0 run in 12 seconds on the road at Oklahoma to get that win there, and his performance against Arkansas and the win here. Just some of those moments that he had during his final season getting to represent his home state here at LSU.”

The Tigers led 37-35 in the first meeting with Mississippi State back on March 1 in Starkville, one of seven times this year the Tigers have had the lead at halftime only to drop the game in the second half, this time, 81-69. Hubbard had 30 points in that game, including 10-of-11 at the free throw line.

Mississippi State shot 64 percent in the second half, making 16-of-25 field goals and finished the game making 29-of-51, almost 57 percent. It was a game where LSU was able to keep the rebound margin close, 36-31, with a 13-8 advantage on the offensive boards that allowed LSU to have a 15-9 advantage in second chance points.

This will be the second consecutive year and the ninth overall that LSU and Mississippi State have met in the SEC Tournament. Last year, Mississippi State won 70-60 in the second round and it was the sixth consecutive win for State in the series. LSU won the first two tournament meetings in 1952 and 1987 before the Bulldogs won in 2002, 2003, 2009, 2017, 2018 and last year.

The winner of Wednesday’s game will play seventh-seed Missouri at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

QS: Theo set for Milan exit despite renewal wish – potential destinations and replacements

Theo Hernandez is heading towards the ‘final stages’ of his time at AC Milan, and now information on his possible destination plus replacements is emerging.

As Quotidiano Sportivo report this morning, Theo has been pretty much an immovable starter under both Paulo Fonseca (who did bench him briefly for attitudes he did not like) and Sergio Conceicao. Despite this, the management are ready to move on from him.

The elephant in the room is his contract, expiring in June 2026. The player has always let it be known that he wants to renew through his agent Manuel Garcia Quilon, both publicly with the comments outside Casa Milan and by rejecting Como’s offer in January.

Milan instead accepted the figure close to €50m proposed by Como, who the Frenchman will face again on Saturday at San Siro. A completely different tag (almost €100m) was going around this summer when Bayern Munich were linked.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, when asked about star players, has always said: “Everything under control, everyone’s happy.” Geoffrey Moncada, on the other hand, recently stated: “We can’t afford to lose players for free.”

  • The Detroit Lions are signing this now former Arizona Cardinals DL.

The Detroit Lions are signing this now former Arizona Cardinals DL.

Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Roy Lopez (98) against the Washington Commanders at State Farm Stadium.

Sep 29, 2024; Glendale, Arizona, USA; Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Roy Lopez (98) against the Washington Commanders at State Farm Stadium.

The Arizona Cardinals are losing defensive lineman Roy Lopez to the Detroit Lions, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

“Former #Cardinals nose tackle Roy Lopez is signing a one-year, $4.65 million deal with the #Lions, per source.”

Lopez – who will turn 28 later this year – played 30 games for the Cardinals over the last two seasons, starting in 16 last season at nose tackle. He started 29 games for the Houston Texans in the previous two years before joining Arizona in 2023.

Lopez accrued 28 total tackles, three passes defensed, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovered for Arizona in 2024.

Lopez was a locker room favorite and typically earned high praise from Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon.

“Consistency, I think we’re all striving for it, but I think Roy is doing an excellent job for us and he’s really developed some of his pass rush,” Gannon said during the regular season.

“Especially (because) it’s hard to rush when you’re playing run first then you get to convert to rush. I think he’s doing a good job with that.”

Lopez now joins a Lions team looking to get over the postseason hump and into their first Super Bowl. Under head coach Dan Campbell, many believe the Cardinals are on a similar trajectory Detroit was just a few seasons ago.

Lopez’s market value on Spotrac was $3.5 million per season, so it looks like he did well in terms of financials.

Arizona has yet to sign an outside defensive lineman, though the Cardinals did ink premier pass rusher Josh Sweat to a massive contract to begin free agency.

Naquon Jones is still a free agent while Khyiris Tonga signed with the New England Patriots previously.

Though Lopez didn’t leave a massive impact on the field, the locker room will be missing a favorite from last season.
