Can Taylor Harwood-Bellis Replace Ezri Konsa at Aston Villa?
Aston Villa have made a significant change to their defensive structure with the arrival of Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton. The 24-year-old centre-back joined Unai Emery’s side on deadline day in a deal worth around £30 million, including an initial £25 million fee and potential add-ons. His arrival follows Ezri Konsa’s £55 million move to Arsenal, leaving Villa with the difficult task of replacing one of their most dependable defenders.
The obvious question now is whether Harwood-Bellis can genuinely fill the void left by Konsa. On paper, the move makes sense, but replacing an established Premier League defender is never straightforward.
Konsa’s departure represents more than simply losing another member of the squad. The England international spent seven seasons at Villa Park and developed into an important part of the club’s defensive identity. His pace, composure, positioning and ability to defend one-on-one situations made him particularly valuable to Emery, whose tactical system demands concentration and intelligence from his centre-backs.
Harwood-Bellis, however, arrives with an impressive foundation of his own. Having come through Manchester City’s academy, he developed his senior career through loan spells before establishing himself at Southampton. He eventually became an important figure for the Saints and made 134 appearances for the club across competitions.
One of the biggest advantages Harwood-Bellis brings is his age. At 24, he is still young enough to improve considerably, but he already possesses substantial senior experience. He has also represented England at senior level, giving Villa another defender who understands the demands of international football.
His leadership qualities could also become important. Harwood-Bellis has captained Southampton on several occasions, demonstrating that he is comfortable taking responsibility from the back. That could prove useful at Villa, particularly after such a dramatic summer of squad changes.
There are also similarities between his profile and Konsa’s. Both defenders are comfortable operating in possession, can contribute to building attacks from deep and possess the mobility required to defend when a team plays with a relatively high defensive line. Those qualities should make Harwood-Bellis suitable for Emery’s tactical demands.
However, Villa supporters should not expect an immediate like-for-like replacement. Konsa had years of experience working under Emery and understood the manager’s defensive principles almost instinctively. Harwood-Bellis will need time to develop that same understanding with his new teammates.
The challenge becomes even greater because Villa are rebuilding across several areas of the squad. The club lost numerous important players during the summer and have brought in a large number of new faces. The Guardian described the situation as a major squad rebuild, with Villa signing ten players during the transfer window.
That means Harwood-Bellis will not simply be asked to replace one player. He will have to establish himself within a defensive unit that is also adapting to other changes. Communication with his centre-back partner, goalkeeper and midfielders will be crucial.
Nevertheless, the fact that Emery identified Harwood-Bellis as a preferred option says plenty about the defender’s potential. Villa reportedly pursued him despite Southampton rejecting multiple offers before the two clubs eventually reached an agreement.
The persistence shown by Villa suggests that this was not a panic signing. Emery and the recruitment team clearly believed Harwood-Bellis possessed the qualities required for the role.
There is also an opportunity for the defender to make the position his own rather than simply attempting to imitate Konsa. If he can become more aggressive in challenges, improve his consistency and adapt quickly to the pace of Premier League football, he could develop into an important player for Villa over the next several seasons.
Ultimately, replacing Konsa should be judged over time rather than after a handful of matches. Konsa left Villa as an established Premier League and England defender, while Harwood-Bellis is arriving with considerable potential and a strong record of development.
Villa may not have found another Konsa, but they may have found a defender capable of beginning his own chapter at Villa Park.
For Emery, that could be even more valuable. Harwood-Bellis does not need to become Konsa overnight. He needs to become a reliable, intelligent and increasingly influential defender within Emery’s system. If he succeeds, Villa’s decision to invest around £30 million in him could eventually look like excellent business.
So, can Taylor Harwood-Bellis replace Ezri Konsa? The answer is yes—but probably not immediately. He has the age, experience, technical ability and mentality to grow into the role. The real test will be whether he can turn that potential into consistent Premier League performances and help Villa maintain their ambitions despite a turbulent period of change.
