What You Need to Know About Coventry, Ipswich and Hull

The 2026/27 Premier League season brings three fresh faces to England’s top flight, with Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City earning promotion from the Championship. Each club arrives with a different story, but all three share the same immediate objective: survive in one of the most demanding leagues in world football.

Coventry City

Coventry are arguably the most intriguing of the three newcomers. The Sky Blues return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years after winning the 2025/26 Championship title by an impressive 11-point margin. Their rise is remarkable considering the club was playing in League Two less than a decade ago.

Former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard is in charge, bringing valuable Premier League experience to the dugout. Coventry have also been active in the transfer market as they attempt to strengthen their squad for the challenge ahead.

However, their opening fixtures could hardly be tougher. Coventry begin their campaign away to reigning champions Arsenal before travelling to Manchester City. They will need to be resilient, particularly with striker Haji Wright facing a lengthy injury absence after scoring 17 Championship goals last season.

Ipswich Town

Ipswich are no strangers to the Premier League, but their latest return comes after a brief absence. The club was relegated in 2024/25 after finishing 19th, but bounced back immediately by securing promotion from the Championship.

The Tractor Boys have appointed Gary O’Neil as manager, hoping his previous Premier League experience can help them avoid another relegation battle. Ipswich also have the advantage of having recently experienced top-flight football, which could make the transition less daunting.

Their opening schedule, however, is challenging. Ipswich begin at home against Sunderland before facing Manchester United and Liverpool. While these matches represent difficult tests, they also provide an opportunity to establish themselves against high-quality opposition early in the campaign.

Hull City

Hull completed the promoted trio by winning the Championship play-off route. After defeating Millwall in the semi-finals, they secured their Premier League place and return to the top flight.

Sergej Jakirovic will lead the Tigers into their first Premier League campaign in several years. Hull face a particularly demanding start, hosting Manchester United before meeting Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle in their first five matches.

The challenge is enormous, but Hull can take encouragement from the fact that promoted clubs are not automatically doomed to relegation. Last season, Sunderland finished seventh after promotion, demonstrating that newly promoted teams can compete successfully when recruitment, organisation and confidence come together.

A battle for survival

History offers a warning to all three clubs. In the two seasons before the current campaign, all six promoted teams were relegated straight back to the Championship. Coventry, Ipswich and Hull will therefore need to adapt quickly and collect points wherever possible.

Their opening fixtures may be intimidating, but the Premier League is unpredictable. If the newcomers can remain organised, strengthen their squads and turn their home matches into points, there is every reason to believe at least some of them can follow Sunderland’s example and make their Premier League adventure last longer than one season.
