Ipswich Town striker George Hirst is set for a spell on the sidelines after injuring his groin
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has confirmed that striker George Hirst is set to be out for ‘a few weeks’.
The 26-year-old, who has bagged six goals and an assist in 21 matches this season, pulled up in the ninth minute of Saturday’s 3-1 win against former club Sheffield Wednesday. McKenna revealed afterwards that it was a groin issue.
Asked whether there was a timeframe on his return, McKenna said: “Not exactly, but it’s going to be a few weeks.
“He’s had a scan, there are no exact timescales.
“Thankfully it’s not a huge muscular injury, but it’s not a very minor one either.”
Ivan Azon looks to be the likely deputy in Hirst’s absence, although Chuba Akpom is also capable of leading the line.
With January fast approaching, the Blues could use the transfer window to strengthen up front. However, McKenna is adamant that Hirst’s injury won’t change their plans in the market.
“It’s hopefully going to be a few weeks,” he stressed.
“You wouldn’t make any sort of decisions around an injury of that sort of timescale, so no, I don’t see it having a big impact on anything we do next month.”
McKenna also revealed that Sam Szmodics – who missed the win against the Owls through illness – is yet to train ahead of the clash at The Den.
