Alabama DC Kane Wommack far from satisfied with pass rush after Tennessee game

Alabama had one of its best games rushing the passer against Tennessee. The Crimson Tide tallied four.

That’s despite the Vols being one of the best teams in the country at limiting sacks. Prior to Saturday, Tennessee had allowed four sacks all season.

Then Yhonzae Pierre sacked Joey Aguilar three times to lead the charge in an impressive pass rush showing.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has shoved aside the laurels, though. He has no plans to let his defense rest.

“We’re still inconsistent,” Wommack said. “Very proud of Yhonzae Pierre and some of the things he did. I think you look at the plays he affected the quarterback, he did his job. He did his job at a high level. And when you do your job consistently, good things happen. That’s something we’ve continued to stress with him and a number of our players. Just doing your job at a more consistent, high level, and production will come from that. But at the same time, we’ve got to find a way to affect the quarterback better.”

Alabama finished with four sacks, which tied a season-high. The Crimson Tide also had four sacks in the Wisconsin game. Previously, the high in an SEC game was two: against Missouri and Georgia.

Sacks are good, but they’re just a few moments in games with a whole lot more than four snaps. Affecting the quarterback is about more than a sack total.

“When you get into two-minute situations at the end of games and you’re four-man rushing and you don’t really want to play man and you don’t necessarily want to pressure, you’ve got to still affect the quarterback,” Wommack said. “We’ve had a number of situations where they’ve moved the ball right down the field and we haven’t touched the quarterback. And that’s something we’ve got to find a way to get better at.”

Wommack did praise his defense for “tremendous” red-zone defense against the Vols. Tennessee finished 2-for-5 in the red zone.
