Crystal Palace confirm bizarre loan move for player they rejected £15m bids for last summer

Crystal Palace have stunned their own supporters and much of the football world by sanctioning a surprise loan exit for one of their most valuable assets — a player for whom the club reportedly rejected offers in the region of £15 million just last summer. The decision has left many scratching their heads, questioning the direction of the club’s recruitment strategy and long-term planning.

The player in question, whose name has been kept under wraps by Palace until the official announcement, was thought to be a cornerstone of the club’s future. At just 23 years old, he had enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2023/24 and was linked with a string of Premier League and European clubs during the last transfer window. Sources at the time suggested that Palace turned down bids believed to be from West Ham United and Brentford, holding out for a higher valuation and insisting the player was not for sale.

Fast forward to September 2025, and Palace have opted to send him on loan to a mid-table Bundesliga side — a move that has baffled many. Supporters have taken to social media to express their confusion, with some accusing the club of poor decision-making and a lack of ambition. “If we rated him high enough to turn down £15m last summer, why are we now loaning him out for a fraction of that value?” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Reports suggest that the loan deal does not include an obligation to buy, meaning the player could still return to Selhurst Park next season. However, critics argue that the decision weakens Palace’s squad depth at a time when they need every weapon available. The club have made a slow start to the current Premier League campaign, scoring just four goals in their opening five matches, and the absence of one of their most creative talents has only deepened concerns about their attacking output.

Manager Oliver Glasner attempted to downplay the controversy during his pre-match press conference, insisting that the move was in the best interests of both the player and the club. “He needs regular game time at this stage of his development,” Glasner said. “This loan will give him the opportunity to play week in, week out in a competitive league, which will benefit us when he comes back.”

Despite Glasner’s reassurances, pundits have questioned whether Palace could live to regret the decision. Former Palace striker Clinton Morrison said on talkSPORT, “It’s a strange one for me. If you’re rejecting £15m offers not so long ago, surely you believe he’s a key player. To then loan him out when you’re short of options — it doesn’t add up.”

Whether this move proves to be a clever piece of long-term planning or a costly misstep remains to be seen. What is certain is that Palace’s fanbase will be watching closely, hoping the decision does not come back to haunt them as the season unfolds.
