Omari Hutchinson celebrates vs Hull City

Ipswich Town were left shocked in many ways when the recently-departed Omari Hutchinson suffered his first major setback at Nottingham Forest earlier in the week, with it being confirmed that the winger was omitted from the Reds’ UEFA Europa League squad.
The Tractor Boys and Forest endured extremely contrasting campaigns in last season’s Premier League, with Kieran McKenna’s side becoming a part of yet another trio of sides to suffer an immediate relegation back to the Championship alongside Leicester City and Southampton, whilst Nuno Espírito Santo guided the East Midlands outfit to a first season of European football for the first time since 1995/96.
As is often the case when a side has been relegated from the top-flight, there has been plenty of change at Portman Road in the recent weeks and months as McKenna looked to reshape a squad capable of achieving the vastly-predicted aim of a first-time promotion back to the elite of English football, with several experienced players or his better performers from last term seeking a new challenge.
Despite featuring in the Premier League for the very first time in his career with the Suffolk side, Hutchinson was one of those, especially when factoring in the high ceiling of potential the England Under-21 international has been predicted to reach by many supporters and outsiders, with Forest eventually bringing a long-standing period of uncertainty regarding his immediate and long-term future to an end.
However, just weeks after moving to Nottingham, the London-born wideman has already suffered a major setback.

After initially being hinted by Tom Collomosse of the Daily Mail on Wednesday afternoon, Forest then confirmed that Hutchinson was omitted from their 25-man UEFA Europa League squad for the upcoming ‘League Phase’, with the club controversially taking the place of Crystal Palace, who were demoted to the Conference League despite winning the FA Cup.
Unsurprisingly, such developments have caused quite the reaction from those associated with Hutchinson’s current and former employers following his recent £37.5m transfer switch.
However, Football League World’s Ipswich fan pundit, Adam Wilkin, isn’t seemingly as shocked as many others are with the news.
“I’d have loved Omari to have stayed at Portman Road, and I said that at the start of the window,” Wilkin told FLW.
“But, it seemed clear from when the season began that he always wanted to move on. He had a really good Under-21’s (Euros). There was always rumours of interest, but nothing serious until right at the end (of the window).
“I personally think he’d have been better off staying for another season at Ipswich Town, being the star man, getting regular football in the Championship and proving his worth some more by helping us to get another promotion. But, he wanted to make that jump straight away,” he explained.
“Unlike Liam Delap, who had a lot of big teams interested in him, the interest wasn’t quite there.
“I think he’s made the move to Forest – who knows what playing time he was promised at the start of that. I imagine he’d have been thinking that he could’ve forced his way in, and at the time they’d lost Elanga to Newcastle, and he was the first winger through the door.
“After he came in, they’ve added two or three other wingers,” Wilkin added.
“It’s been rumoured that he wasn’t a ‘Nuno signing’ and that he was more of a ‘Marinakis signing’, as Marinakis has close ties to his agent, in which case Nuno maybe doesn’t actually want him.
“But, it looks like he might not get that much playing time at all at Forest, which I’m sure isn’t what he wanted, and it could have been a mistake.”
Hutchinson will hope Europa League omission isn’t sign of things to come after Nottingham Forest switch

Whilst it will be a major source of frustration for Hutchinson to have missed out on the chance to show his potential on the European stage, he will undoubtedly hope that this isn’t a sign of things to come at the City Ground.
It must be said that this squad omission was purely for the eight upcoming ‘League Phase’ matches which begin later in the month for Nuno’s side, so there is an opportunity for the 21-year-old to force his way into said plans for the knockout stages should he eventually showcase why Forest parted with the aforementioned fee for his services.
After being slightly less effective at Portman Road last term in comparison to his stunning breakthrough loan in 2023/24, where he was instrumental in Town sealing back-to-back promotions, it’s no surprise that Wilkin wanted him to stick around for another season with the Blues.
However, even after an individual setback, the former Arsenal and Chelsea man may look at his former side’s slow start to the season and still feel that his desire to leave was vindicated.
