Italian media outlets have been stirring up trouble ever since the 24-year-old ditched the San Siro for St James’ Park. Tonali arrived for £55million in July 2023 as one of Europe’s brightest midfield talents.
He became a household name in Italy after helping Milan win Serie A – and Newcastle came calling a year later. However, just 12 games into his Toon career, the midfielder was given a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations.
Newcastle rallied around Tonali and are now reaping the rewards, with his position change to deep-lying midfielder transforming the season. But that has not quashed speculation from the continent linking him with a possible Milan return.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported in December that Tonali is unhappy at Newcastle. Prominent journalist Gianluca Di Marzio also suggested he could join Real Madrid or Manchester City at the end of the season.
Tonali’s agent, Beppe Riso, made it crystal clear earlier this month that his client remains happy on Tyneside. The Toon ace has now clarified his position – insisting he is set on achieving success at Newcastle ahead of next month’s Carabao Cup final.
“I have never spoken about it (a return) with my agents,” Tonali told La Repubblica. “And I know, from experience, that if you don’t get to that point there is nothing concrete.
“And in any case, I am happy with myself here, I have found my line and there is no need to upset it again. I want to win for the Newcastle fans, soon we will have the first opportunity at Wembley.
“(The move has worked out) not just economically. I grew up and discovered a new country, a new football and a new language. I have no regrets. The idea of returning to Milan one day is there but it’s not the thought when I wake up in the morning.”
