A little bit of luxury would seem a just reward for Hodgkinson, who made sure she worked hard to come away with everything she dream of in the Stade de France. “I deserve this,” she reflected in the aftermath.

“This last year has been focused on how I can level up. This year you could see how I’ve grown as an athlete, first time I’ve been the favourite going into a championships. I’ve been determined for it to be that way. This year I’ve tried to step up.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet, to be honest. I’ve worked so hard for this, I’m out of words.

“It didn’t go how I thought it was going to but you can’t predict these things. I kept my composure. I could see Mary coming but I knew if I was in the right mind-frame I could do it today.”
