Ipswich Town U21s returned to winning ways as they beat Leicester City 2-0 at their Seagrave Training Ground to claim their first Premier League Cup victory of the season this evening.

John McGreal and Chris Casement’s side made four changes from the late 2-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday evening.

Goalkeeper Woody Williamson and Ryan Carr were back in the squad after being on international duty with Scotland U21, while Luca Fletcher was back in the starting XI and Josh Pitts returned after winning his fifth cap for Malta U21s.

Town U21s: Williamson, Elliott, Boniface, Mthunzi (Shabazz-Edwards 46), Onuchukwu, Barbrook, Mendel (Mauge 55), Carr (c), Fletcher, Eze (Wood 84), Pitts (Lewis 76).

ONE TO THE GOOD

The young Blues opened the scoring in the 15th minute when a great ball over the top by Corbin Mthunzi found Luca Fletcher, who ran onto it before slotting home for his second goal since his arrival on loan from Man City.

Five minutes later, Town were close to doubling their lead when Leon Elliott tried his luck with a looping half-volley from distance, but his effort was just over the bar.

A LANDMARK GOAL

Town continued to apply pressure in a bid to extend their lead, which they did in the 67th minute when Carr played the ball to Jamie Mauge down the right and his low cross was found by Nelson Eze, who fired in for his first goal at U21 level.

The 6ft 6in tall forward only made his debut at this level last month, having been a regular for the U18s. He signed his first professional contract at Portman Road in December last year.

The young Blues were reduced to ten-men when Elliott was shown a straight red card which gave them a test to hold on to their win.

However, the hosts were unable to threaten and Town secured their first Premier League Cup win and their first victory in two games in all competitions.

This result sees them move to second in their group, level on points with Preston, while Charlton lead the way at the top.

Town return to action when they face Leicester again in this competition, this time at Portman Road on Monday, December 1st.
