49ers’ Jordan Mason: His own harshest critic in self-evaluation

Jordan Mason, a running back with the San Francisco 49ers, is the hardest person on himself. In the preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans, he led the club with 34 running yards and a touchdown on six carries, averaging 5.7 yards per attempt. But when it came to assessing himself, Mason could only think of what was lacking. Mason acknowledged that he had not settled into a routine during his third NFL season. He worries that becoming complacent could impede his development and keep him from realizing his greatest ability on the field. Mason focused on his errors against the Titans, including failing to make a catch on his one and only target, rather than thinking back on what went well.

“Obviously, I didn’t want to miss a catch out there today,” Mason said to reporters following the game in Nissan Stadium’s visitor’s locker room. “And the protection out there—I ran good, but there’s some things that I don’t like about today.” This offseason, Mason put in a lot of effort to improve his pass-catching abilities. He even bought a $3,000 JUGS machine and trained with his father to increase his effectiveness in the passing game. It was especially regrettable that catch was missed against the Titans.

Mason has only caught 31 yards on three occasions in his career, and those were in 2023. He has accumulated 464 running yards and four touchdowns on 83 touches over his two NFL seasons. Mason has demonstrated to his teammates during training camp that he is developing into a more versatile player who can contribute in both the run and pass game. At the beginning of camp, running back Christian McCaffrey said, “I think he looks way more complete than he has been.” “He’s had the ability to do it forever. It just requires consistency. And as you can probably see by now, he’s producing pass and run plays that are entirely consistent with it.”

Quarterback Brandon Allen made a statement regarding Jordan Mason’s discernible development following the preseason defeat. “Since I got here last year, I’ve noticed just how hard he runs, and his vision is really, really good,” Allen said. “And when a running back possesses both exceptional physicality and good vision, those traits work really well together.”

“I suppose the media can say I had a good day, but in my opinion, I didn’t really have a good day,” Mason continued. Well, I’m sure I could run. I’m attempting to finish my game.”
