Ronnie heard that, and he didn’t really like it.” Tony Iommi says Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham meant to compliment Black Sabbath’s Ronnie James Dio. It didn’t go well

The Sabbath guitarist found himself at the center of a dispute after the drummer’s comments were taken the wrong way

Tony Iommi (elft) poses for a portrait backstage at Cobo Arena in Detroit, March 22, 1986. Ronnie James Dio performs in concert at the Spectrum, in Philadelphia, September 13, 1985.

The end of the classic Black Sabbath lineup was difficult for all involved. Left without a band, Ozzy Osbourne had to build a new career from the ground up. As for Tony Iommi and the rest of Sabbath, they were left rudderless as they searched for another singer to lead them into a new era.

Ozzy found his answer in of Randy Rhoads , a young, talented guitarist he hired after bassist Bob Daisley had a premonition he’d lead the group to greatness.

Sabbath, meanwhile, turned to five-foot-four powerhouse vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who had just been fired from Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow and was down on his luck.

After a serendipitous meetup at L.A.’s Rainbow bar brought them together, Iommi and Dio forged an instant musical connection when, at their first jam session, they wrote “Children of the Sea,” one of the key tracks from 1980’s Heaven and Hell , Black Sabbath’s first album without Osbourne.

Though the task of winning over the Ozzy faithful fanbase wasn’t going to be easy, Dio’s vocal talents helped launch Sabbath to their highest chart position since 1975’s Sabotage, outdone only by the monster catalog albums Paranoid and Master of Reality.

Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, who was Iommi’s best man when he married Susan Snowden in 1973, was one of those many fans impressed by what Dio brought to the band. However, his habit of straight-talking caused him to put his foot in his mouth when he intended to flatter Dio. It was left to Iommi to prevent the diminutive Dio from tearing into the much larger Bonham.

“Yeah, there was some kind of a word,” Iommi admitted when asked about the kerfuffle while being interviewed by Bill Burr in 2011. “John came to the gig when we played at Hammersmith in London. And we were going to go out after the show to a bar.”

According to a Black Sabbath fan site, the band played four consecutive nights at London’s Hammersmith Odeon between May 7 and 10, 1980, with Girlschool in tow. It’s not clear which night Bonham attended, but it was in the English capitol that his remarks were taken in the wrong light.

“John’s drinking on the side of the stage, drinking Guinness,” Iommi says, coloring the scene. “We came offstage, and as we walked past John, John said to me, ‘Oh, man, he’s got a great voice for a midget.’ And, of course, Ronnie heard that, and he didn’t really like that.

“He actually meant, ‘What a little body, and he’s got a big voice!’” the guitarist explains, interpreting Bonham’s poorly dressed pleasantries. “But the way he said it…

“Of course, Ronnie popped up and… I won’t repeat what he said. They were gonna fight.”

Suddenly, Iommi found himself at the center of the ruckus and astutely defused the situation by telling the pair to “just get along.” Eloquently put. Tragically, Bonham would pass just months later, on September 25, 1980, the victim of too much drink.

Black Sabbath are set for one last hurrah at Villa Park next month, as the Tom Morello-curated Back to the Beginning farewell gig finally comes around.

  • Commanders owner Josh Harris buys $500,000 Jayden Daniels card in record sale

Commanders owner Josh Harris buys $500,000 Jayden Daniels card in record sale

A new record sale for a Jayden Daniels trading card was set when Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris agreed to pay $500,000 for one of Daniels’ most sought-after rookie cards while standing next to the young quarterback on stage at Topps Trade Night on Saturday.

Harris and Daniels were special guests at the event, which followed Day 2 of Fanatics Fest at the Javits Center.

Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin played negotiator on the microphone in front of a sizable crowd after asking attendees who had the most valuable Daniels card with them. Josh Roth and Jacob Ramos of the Florida-based Rothcards answered that call with Daniels’ 2024 Panini Prizm Black Finite one-of-one card.

After a quick back-and-forth chat, Harris agreed through Rubin to purchase the card. In addition to the $500,000, Roth and Ramos also received an autographed Daniels jersey, which the 2024 NFL offensive rookie of the year and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner inked on the spot.

Harris will display the card at the Commanders’ Northwest Stadium, according to Fanatics.

The original unearthing of the Daniels Black Finite card bears its own improbable story.

A collector with the username “Dr. Moist Muffins” acquired the card from a pack through a box break (where collectors pay for a select portion of the cards opened by a third party) on a Fanatics Live stream around midday New Year’s Day. Dr. Ojash Raval, as he’s known outside of trading card livestreams, only spent $36 for the rights to all the Commanders cards in the break.

The monster Daniels card then emerged from a pack, spurring immediate offers from interested buyers. Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit and husband to tennis legend Serena Williams, had previously offered a $200,000 public bounty to whoever pulled the card.

Roth wouldn’t give an exact amount of how much was spent in buying the card from “Dr. Moist Muffins,” but said it was in the mid-$300,000 range. So Roth and Ramos will share in a profit of about $150,000 on the card.

And as much as the original discovery of the card came by chance, the card’s sale to Harris felt just as improbable.

Roth said he walked into Fanatics Fest before the doors opened early Saturday since his business had purchased a table to sell cards at the show. He found Rubin “just chilling, kicking a soccer ball” in the Dick’s Sporting Goods set-up near one of the Fest’s entrances. Ramos called the encounter with Rubin “just random.”

“I walked up to him and said, ‘Yo, we’ve got to show Jayden this card. It’s the best (Daniels) card in existence,’” Roth said. “Now granted, it’s not a Topps product. So Rubin was kind of (hesitant).”

Roth said his table had a great day at the show and he and his business partner Ramos then walked into the Topps trade night, which is essentially a swap meet for card collectors, on the top floor of Javits Center after the Fest closed up shop for the day.

Rubin introduced Daniels and Harris to the crowd and shortly after asked, “Who has the biggest Jayden Daniels card?” The duo, with the help of a bulky lead blocker, broke through the crowd to the stage holding up the one-of-a-kind card.

Rubin asked Roth what he thought the card was worth. Roth shouted “$2 million!” Rubin asked again what the card was really worth, turning to Fanatics Collect CEO Mike Mahan for his assessment, which was $500,000.

Roth went right for Rubin’s heart, invoking the Paul Skenes Topps MLB Debut Patch autographed one-of-one card that famously sold for $1.11 million to Dick’s Sporting Goods in March. As he continued to plead the case for the card, Rubin named the price:

“Alright one time, half a million dollars. You want it? From Josh Harris, with Jayden here right now.”

Roth looked back at Ramos and quickly agreed on the sale.

“It was such an experience to be on stage with just everyone. It really happened so fast. Moments like that are timeless,” Ramos said.

“That was our negotiation right there. I should have countered him!” Roth said with a laugh.

Roth said the duo held onto the card by design for the summer months, thinking it would be “exciting” given how much momentum Daniels’ hobby stock would carry into the 2025 NFL season. Daniels was the second most searched athlete on eBay in May behind only Michael Jordan. Roth added that he hoped for a seven-figure payday for the card, “but when the moment came, we just had to say yes to a deal like that.”

“We were kind of looking for Jayden in the other room (the main Fest area on the floor below), and it kind of didn’t work out,” Roth said. “And then we come up here. If it happens, it happens. It just so happens that fate worked out perfectly.”

As for “Dr. Moist Muffins?” He’s thrilled to be connected to another wild piece of trading card history.

“It’s satisfying to see that card go to the owner of the Commanders!” Raval told The Athletic on Sunday. “It’s been very cool to see the journey that card has taken, from the break all the way to its future home. That card will always hold a special place in my heart. Congrats to Josh and best of luck to Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders this upcoming season!”

You might see Speed at the Olympic trials”-Justin Gatlin weighs in on conversation between Usain Bolt and famous Youtuber who challenged Noah Lyles

JustIN Gatlin expressed his thoughts on the conversation between Usain Bolt and the famous Youtuber IShowSpeed. The young Youtuber has been on a challenge spree where he ran races against Noah Lyles and Ashton Hall.

Even though IShowSpeed could not win the race against Noah Lyles, the youngster received heaps of praise of his incredible athleticism from fans and enthusiasts. Recently, IShowSpeed showcased a video message that he received from the legendary athlete Usain Bolt in which the Jamaican athlete praised his running ability and even offered to coach him to help him get faster.

Justin Gatlin reacted to the video in the latest episode of the podcast ‘Ready Set Go’ and shared his thoughts. The former athlete was impressed by IShowSpeed and shared that the youngster has the ability to compete at the Olympic trials if he trains for the sport seriously.

“They got each other’s phone numbers, so they’re going to talk. So you might see some things from Speed. I mean, Speed might even take it serious enough to where he says I’m going to train for the Olympic trial. So you might see Speed at the Olympic trials, bro,” he said.

, Gatlin weighed in IShowSpeed competing in a 100m race and expressed that according to him the youngster could register a 10.6s performance.

“Real deal, I think if Speed was to run today, if he was to try to run and actually get in a 100-meter race like Tyreek Hill, I would definitely give him somewhere around 10.6, 10.7. I definitely, if he runs faster now, I might be a little surprised, but I definitely think, right now, no training, just him putting on some spikes and trying, I think he’s around 10.6, 10.7,”he added.

Usain Bolt opens up about competing with rival Justin Gatlin

Jamaican former athlete Usain Bolt becomes the official ambassador of EXPO 2027 in Serbia –

Usain Bolt opened up about competing with Justin Gatlin during an appearance on the Ready Set Go Podcast. The Jamaican athlete called him one of the ‘greatest’ athletes that he had ever competed with.

Moreover, Bolt revealed that his coach Glen Mills often alerted him about Gatlin’s presence in races as one of his main rivals who had the capacity to pose a serious challenge to him.

“I say this many times; if you see my interviews, I always say this: you’re one of the greatest people I have ever competed with. My coach told me to listen; one guy is going to show up, and it’s going to be Justin. That’s the respect my coach has for you,” he said.

Futhermore, Bolt shared that this rivalry helped him to push himself to put forward his best performances during major events.

  • The Led Zeppelin song that gave Eddie Van Halen his technique

The Led Zeppelin song that gave Eddie Van Halen his technique

To be a legend is to be memorable above all else. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of incredible guitar players who have had their blast in the spotlight and then disappeared into the ether.

Without a defining moment, style, or image, a legacy is nigh-on impossible. If there is one guitar technique that Eddie Van Halen will forever be remembered for, it will be tapping.

Although not exactly unknown before Eddie adopted it, with Genesis’ Steve Hackett notably employing the technique on ‘Dancing with the Moonlit Knight’, Van Halen revolutionised and popularised tapping for an entirely new generation of hard rock and heavy metal disciples.

It is a piece of his unstoppable legacy. Without this technique, there might have been a time when the power of Eddie Van Halen was a hushed word shared between friends.

Like all incredible gifts, Van Halen’s is surrounded by mystery. His talent may well have been there for all to see for a long while, but the guitarist gained this technique in a somewhat unusual way. There remains some debate as to how Van Halen first took on tapping, and whether he had seen someone else do it before.

In a 2009 interview, Dokken guitarist George Lynch claims that both he and Van Halen had seen Harvey Mandel utilise the tapping technique at a show in West Hollywood in the 1970s, at a club called Starwood. Hackett himself claims some credit for inspiring Van Halen, but Eddie has stated that he never saw Genesis perform live, much less heard Hackett’s version on the technique.

Instead, Van Halen points to another legendary guitarist as his inspiration: Jimmy Page. Specifically, Van Halen says it was watching Led Zeppelin play the Forum during the ’70s where he first got the idea to start tapping.

“I think I got the idea of tapping watching Jimmy Page do his ‘Heartbreaker’ solo back in 1971,” Van Halen told Guitar World in 2008. “He was doing a pull-off to an open string, and I thought, ‘Wait a minute, open string … pull off. I can do that, but what if I use my finger as the nut and move it around?’ I just kind of took it and ran with it.”

According to Van Halen, it wasn’t Page originating the technique that became Van Halen’s signature. Rather, Van Halen saw Page playing around with a similar technique and later adapted it to his own style. In this version of the story, Van Halen is the originator of his own design.

Tapping had certainly existed before Eddie Van Halen, but nobody was doing it in the way that Van Halen was. For someone who built his own guitar and learned music by ear, it only makes sense that Van Halen would teach himself tapping instead of culling it from someone else.

Check out a 1973 performance of ‘Heartbreaker’ at Los Angeles’ The Forum and see if you can make the connection between Page’s solo and Van Halen’s eventual epiphany.

  • How an Icelandic Concert Inspired Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song

How an Icelandic Concert Inspired Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song

How an Icelandic Concert Inspired Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song’

There are lots of mystical and moving metaphors to be found in Led Zeppelin songs, but when Robert Plant sang about coming from the land of ice and snow in “Immigrant Song,” he meant it literally.

“Immigrant Song” appeared on Led Zeppelin’s 1970 album Led Zeppelin III and was its lone single. Several months prior to the album’s October release, the band played for the first and only time in Reykjavik, Iceland at a venue called Laugardalshol on June 22, 1970.

For Northern Hemisphere dwellers, June is usually associated with summer weather, but Iceland, as one might assume, never gets all that hot. Even at the time of year Led Zeppelin visited, the average temperature was likely around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Vikings, Hot Springs and the Midnight Sun

Plant took almost immediate lyrical inspiration from the surroundings (plus its history of exploratory vikings). Iceland is home to hundreds of hot springs and geothermal pools, and between the months of May and August, the region experiences close to 24 hours of daylight per day. Or in the lyrics of Plant: the “midnight sun”

“We weren’t being pompous,” Plant later recalled to author Chris Welch for the book Led Zeppelin. “We did come from the land of the ice and snow. We were guests of the Icelandic Government on a cultural mission. We were invited to play a concert in Reykjavik and the day before we arrived all the civil servants went on strike and the gig was going to be cancelled. The university prepared a concert hall for us and it was phenomenal. The response from the kids was remarkable and we had a great time. ‘Immigrant Song’ was about that trip and it was the opening track on the album that was intended to be incredibly different.”

By Jimmy Page’s account, it would appear the guitarist already had his part — an incredible, grinding riff — loosely figured out by the time Plant wrote the lyrics. As the band was preparing Led Zeppelin III, Page knew they were onto something with the power to be successful.

“Right at the early stages of rehearsing, when I think it was just John Bonham and myself, I had ‘Immigrant Song,’ ‘Out on the Tiles’ and also ‘Friends,’” he said to Total Guitar in 2020 (via MusicRadar). “If you say straight away you’ve got ‘Friends’ and ‘Immigrant Song,’ already it’s got the yin and yang. And there’s all this other stuff that’s going to go in.”

Listen to Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song’

Well before it was released in any official capacity, Led Zeppelin performed the song live a mere six days after playing Iceland at England’s Bath Festival on June 28, 1970. When it was later put out as a single in November of that same year, it went to No. 16 in the U.S.

Since the breakup of Led Zeppelin, Plant has performed in Reykjavik three times as a solo artist, twice in 2005 a few days apart and once on June 23, 2019. It was at that lattermost show that Plant finally sang the song in Iceland for the first time since that 1970 concert, nearly 50 years prior.

  • Lions are sitting on a breakout star and league has no idea

Lions are sitting on a breakout star and league has no idea

Tate Ratledge has the opportunity to follow in Frank Ragnow’s footsteps with the Lions.

Detroit Lions rookie Tate Ratledge is being tapped as a potential replacment to center Frank Ragnow fairly early in his NFL career. Ragnow’s retirement sent shockwaves through the league as he was one of the league’s premier interior offensive linemen, and as Detroit didn’t have an immediate way to backfill his role on the line.

Ratledge, a guard coming over from Georgia, has been earning reps in OTAs at center most frequently, getting more over veterans like Graham Glasgow and Trystan Colon, two guards with experience shifting over to center in their careers. Ratledge is seemingly doing a great job learning the position, though, as it has been reported he’s earned the most time at the position in practice.

This makes him a prime breakout candidate for the Lions this season. Offensive linemen don’t often get that sort of shine, but when you’re a team that rosters one of the best tackles in the NFL in Penei Sewell, it’s not unfamiliar territory. Ratledge came out of the draft as someone praised as a hugely impactful rookie – if utilized correctly – by ESPN’s Field Yates.

“Lions GM Brad Holmes has made it a point to target reliable and extremely tough players in the draft. That describes Ratledge well. He allowed only one sack in each of the past two seasons at Georgia and exudes toughness on tape. Kevin Zeitler’s departure to Tennessee opens a starting guard job in Detroit, and I like Ratledge’s chances to fill that role,” wrote Yates.

Ratledge a great candidate to have breakout rookie year for Lions

Ratledge told reporters prior to Ragnow’s retirement, even, that he’d gotten experience getting reps at center before getting drafted. He’s used to cross-training at guard and center from his days with the Bulldogs, so viewing him as a replacement for Ragnow isn’t far fetched.

The guard was ranked the second-best available interior offensive lineman available in this year’s draft by PFF, and ranked fourth overall amongst guards in the Power Four conferences in run blocking in 2024.

The guard was taken as a key part of Holmes’ push to shore up their trenches, which obviously paid off given Ragnow’s shocking retirement.

With a team like Detroit, Ratledge is in a great spot to not just develop into a solid center, but into a great one. He already has the run-blocking skills necessary to backfill Ragnow’s impact. It’s just a matter of getting live reps at center for the rookie to see if he can settle into a new role on the line.

Breaking news: Favour Ofili finally dumps Nigeria, set to receive $500,000 base payment in Turkey

World and Nigerian record Favour Ofili has reportedly switched allegiance to Turkey as of May 31, 2025. She made the decision citing the incompetency of the AFN.

Record-breaking Favour Ofili has reportedly dumped Nigeria for money-recruiting Turkey, where she’s set to earn a $500,000 base payment that can rise to $1,000,000 if the move is completed.

Popularly known as ‘Star Girl’, the 22-year-old speedster who recently clocked a World Record of 15.85s in the 150m at the Adidas Atlanta City Games, has requested a switch of allegiance to Turkey and will no longer don the green and white colours of Nigeria.

According to reports, Ofili made the decision, expressing her frustration to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). – a move triggered by years of neglect. She started the process on May 31st and the same AFN leadership was re-elected this June.

The highly talented speedster after hitting the 100m standard for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, AFN and the Nigerian NOC failed to enter her name – the second time she’s missed an Olympic event due to federation mishandling.

In 2021, she also missed the Tokyo Olympics 200m after AFN & NADC failed to get her tested in time, affecting 13 other athletes.

Turkey is currently conducting extensive recruitment of top international athletes, particularly from Jamaica and countries with less favorable federations.

Their recruitment drive is operating with urgency as the athletes must acquire Turkish citizenship and residency before the end of this month in order to satisfy the three-year eligibility rule enforced by World Athletics for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The athletes who accept the nationality switch are set to receive an upfront payment of at least $500,000 per athlete, and promises of substantial monthly stipends and performance bonuses.

Morgantown, West Virginia, USA; West Virginia Mountaineers running back Jahiem White (1) runs the ball during the first quarter against the Baylor Bears at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium.

All offseason long, the national media have brutally graded West Virginia’s roster and set expectations extremely low for Rich Rodriguez in his first year back at the helm, and rightfully so. Over 70 newcomers will be on the roster this season, which means chemistry is almost non-existent heading into August.

The top-line talent WVU has should be good enough to compete in the Big 12, but the depth appears to be the coaching staff’s biggest concern. If the starting units can stay healthy and gel early in the season, they should be in a good position to reach a bowl game.

David Cobb of CBS Sports recently graded each year one roster of each Power Four program with a new coach. He has WVU second with a B, checking in right behind North Carolina, and ahead of Wake Forest, UCF, Purdue, and Stanford.

“Rodriguez’s revamped roster features several productive defensive additions from the portal, including 2024 AAC Defensive Player of the Year Jimmori Robinson at defensive end. Robinson led the AAC with 10.5 sacks last season at UTSA and is one of several transfer-up pieces who will determine the ceiling of a unit led by ex-Oklahoma defensive coordinator Zac Alley.

Where the talent — or perhaps money — appears to run out is along the offensive line. If the Mountaineers can figure that group out, don’t doubt Rodriguez’s ability to produce a good offense. But the skill position groups aren’t talented enough to overcome poor line play. However, top QB candidates Nicco Marchiol and Jaylen Henderson are both mobile, which should come in handy if and when things break down.”

I will disagree on one thing here…the skill groups aren’t as bad as Cobb believes. The backfield is in pretty good shape with Jahiem White returning and Jaylan Knighton (SMU transfer) and Tye Edwards (Northern Iowa transfer) now in the mix.

At wide receiver, Cam Vaughn is a star in the making, and they have some veterans who have performed well at the lower levels, including Jeff Weimer, Logan Ramper, Justin Smith-Brown, etc., and also have Jaden Bray back and healthy. The receiver group is a pretty big question mark, but they have enough capable bodies in that room to find a few answers. As far as the offensive line goes, yeah, that might be a struggle.
