Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs wins monthly award, nominated for yearly award

One day after being given a weekly honor, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs won a monthly award and was named a finalist for a yearly honor.

Gibbs, who was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday after scoring four touchdowns in Detroit’s 31-9, division-clinching win over the Minnesota Vikings, was named the NFC’s Player of the Month for December and January and was nominated for the 2024 FedEx Air and Ground Players of the Year.

Gibbs’ production exploded after taking over the workload of injured teammate and running back David Montgomery (knee), who is expected to make his return in the Divisional Round. Over five games in December and January, Gibbs totaled nine touchdowns and 674 yards from scrimmage (439 rushing, 235 receiving), an average of 134.8 per game.

The second-year running back saved his best performance for last: Gibbs had 139 rushing yards and 31 receiving while scoring four times against the Vikings to set a new franchise single-season touchdown record (20).

For the FedEx Air and Ground award, Gibbs was nominated alongside quarterbacks Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals) and Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens), wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase (Cincinnati Bengals) and running back Saquon Barkley (Philadelphia Eagles).

The Lions had a franchise-record four Player of the Month awards this season, one in each month. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (defensive) won it in September, quarterback Jared Goff (offensive) won it in October, kicker Jake Bates (special teams) won it in November before Gibbs won for December and January.

Gibbs, the former No. 12 pick out of Alabama, finished his second NFL season with 1,412 rushing yards (5.6 yards per carry) and 517 receiving (9.9 per reception).
