Wigan Warriors air big retention reality as club concede inevitable player exits

Wigan have retained a big prize, but it will come at a cost elsewhere.

Wigan Warriors have re-signed key forward Sam Walters to a long-term contract. However, the deal is now set to come at a cost elsewhere, with player exits now ‘inevitable’ – at least according to club chief executive Kris Radlinski.

One of those exits is already set in stone, with All Out Rugby League exclusively reporting back in March that Wigan prop Harvie Hill has signed for Hull FC – who offered a better deal than the champions could facilitate.

Ultimately, that fact has helped tie Hill down, with the young Cumbrian middle set to continue his development with the Airlie Birds under John Cartwright from next season.

That salary cap reality could also bite elsewhere, with Wigan’s success meaning retention comes at a greater price, with players naturally earning more due to recent achievements. It’s something Radlinksi acknowledged when speaking to club media after Walters’ new four-year deal was confirmed.

He explained: “Sam committing to us for a long period is wonderful news, as his potential is huge. Whilst the news must be celebrated, there’s always a flip side. Retaining the exceptional talent that will shape our next five years remains a top priority.

“We’re proud of the success this squad has achieved, and it’s a testament to their quality that many are now in high demand. However, in a salary cap sport, keeping a winning group together is never easy.

“Success brings opportunity, and in a short playing career, we fully respect players must make decisions in their best interests. While some departures are inevitable, replacing like-for-like talent is not always possible. We remain committed to building a strong, competitive team—but acknowledge the challenges that come with sustained success.”

As well as Hill, another prop forward is expected to leave Wigan at the end of the season, with Liam Bryne set to join Warrington Wolves for 2026 – a move first reported by the Warrington Guardian.

However, there’s no denying that Walters’ new contract is a huge bit of retention for Wigan. The forward has grown and grown in head coach Matt Peet’s setup, with his future now secured until at least the end of the 2029 season.

He originally joined Wigan from Leeds on a three-year deal ahead of 2024 but has now earned an improved contract after making 28 appearances for the club in both the back row and prop positions.

Walters broke his collarbone in a pre-season friendly game at Hull last year but returned strong to play his part in Wigan’s quadruple-winning season. He is currently out with a broken leg suffered at Catalans in May.

Commenting on his new deal, Sam Walters said: “I’m delighted, and grateful to have signed a new deal with the club. My family and I are settled here, and I believe this is the best place for me to keep developing my game. I want to continue working hard towards bringing more success to this club.”

Meanwhile, Peet added: “Sam is very professional, and I’ve loved coaching him. Of course, I’m delighted we’ve got him for a further four years. Everyone will have been impressed by Sam’s form this year.

Some of the foundations were laid last year, with how hard he worked, and he has grasped this opportunity with both hands. I can’t wait to see how we can maximise his potential in the coming years.”

Wigan Warriors tie down key forward to new long-term deal

Wigan Warriors have confirmed that Sam Walters has signed a new long-term deal with the club until the end of the 2029 season.

Walters joined Wigan from Leeds Rhinos at the start of last year on a three-year deal that was due to expire at the end of next season.

However, he has become the latest player to lock his future into the Super League champions for a lengthy period after agreeing to a three-year extension.

Walters was a crucial part of the squad that won every domestic trophy on offer last season and though currently sidelined due to injury, is set to return in the coming weeks ahead of the business end of the season.

Wigan coach Matt Peet said: “Sam is very professional and I’ve loved coaching him and of course I’m delighted that we’ve got him for a further four years.

“Everyone will have been impressed by Sam’s form this year. Some of the foundations of it were laid last year with how hard he worked, and he has grasped this opportunity with both hands. I can’t wait to see how we can maximise his potential in the coming years.”

Wigan Warriors coach Matt Peet is hopeful he will be able to welcome back key duo Bevan French and Luke Thompson for their trip to Wakefield Trinity on Friday night.

This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Notice and Terms of Service apply.

Star man French was absent from Peet’s side that beat Huddersfield Giants in Dewsbury last Saturday due to a tight calf, whilst powerhouse prop Luke Thompson hasn’t played since breaking two ribs in the Warriors’ victory over Catalans Dragons in the south of France last month.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Peet confirmed that both players will be part of his 21-man squad for Friday’s clash with Wakefield at the DIY Kitchens Stadium.

“Bevan will make the 21, I’m hoping he plays, but it’s early in the week yet,” said Peet.

“Luke’s trained today and done a little bit of contact, so hopefully he comes through the rest of the week okay. Similar to Bev, he’ll be in the 21.”

Peet also provided the latest on Abbas Miski and Sam Walters, who are Wigan’s only long-term absentees with knee and fibula injuries respectively.

“They’re both ticking the games off,” Peet said. “I don’t want to put a number on it because it escapes my mind, but I think Sam will be just after the bye week, and Abbas will be just before, but they’re both accelerating quickly and are doing what we expect of them.”

Meanwhile, Peet confirmed that new Christian Wade will again feature for the Reserves when they make the trip to the Totally Wicked Stadium to face St Helens on Saturday afternoon, midday kick-off.

Peet says he has been impressed by the way their new recruit has taken to life in a new sport, with his attitude and willingness to learn being one of his standout traits so far.

“I’d say he’s doing everything he can,” Peet added. “He’s very diligent, the lads have taken to him because his attitude is so good and because he has an infectious personality.

“He has got to keep learning, he’s going to make mistakes, but we’re going to do things in training to maximise his learning and I think every day at the moment will be really exciting and he seems to be enjoying it.”

Liam Marshall is Wigan’s all-time top Super League try-scorer.

Wigan Warriors winger Liam Marshall is now officially the club’s all-time top try-scorer in Super League history.

Marshall was level with Warriors icon Pat Richards on 147 Super League tries going into Saturday afternoon’s game with Huddersfield Giants.

And it took him less than 15 minutes to score the crucial try which took him ahead of Richards, breaking the deadlock in the process and moving him onto 148 for the Warriors.

The England international has had a fine career for his hometown club, and was also making his 200th appearance for the Warriors in all competitions on Saturday afternoon.

And it will be an occasion to remember now for Marshall irrespective of the outcome, as it will forever be the day when he etched his name into the club’s record books in Super League.

Marshall has a very good chance of pulling away and opening up an unassailable lead at the summit in the years ahead, given how he remains under contract at Wigan for a few more years yet.

The 29-year-old made his debut in 2017 but not before spending a season on loan at Swinton in 2016, scoring 20 tries in 22 games.

Marshall scored four tries for Wigan on just his second appearance for the club and has since gone on to become a regular fixture on the wing since Matt Peet took charge of the Warriors.

And he will now be permanently part of the club’s history books.

Tries from Marshall, Field and a Farrimond double led Wigan to victory.

Match Report as Wigan Warriors win against Huddersfield Giants at FLAIR Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Liam Marshall became Wigan’s all-time Super League try scorer on Saturday afternoon, making it 148 tries whilst also celebrating his 200th Wigan appearance in the win.

Despite opening the scoring, Wigan conceded two first half scores from George Flanagan and George King, both converted by full-back Flanagan to see Wigan trail 12-4 at the break.

Jai Field hit back after the restart for Wigan before former Warrior Joe Greenwood extend the Giants’ lead again to 18-10. A late converted double from Jack Farrimond saw the Warriors snatch the two-points in a 22-18 win to remain firmly in second spot in the Super League table.

After a quieter start to the fixture at FLAIR stadium, it was an historic opening try for the Warriors as Liam Marshall opened the scoring to become our all-time leading try scorer, surpassing Pat Richards with an effort on the edge with some slick work in the build-up courtesy of a Junior Nsemba offload before Field and Wardle combined to send Marshall in. Adam Keighran was unable to convert the score as we led 4-0.

Just 7 minutes later though and Huddersfield responded as they worked the ball left from a penalty to see full-back George Flanagan in to level the scores, before converting his own score to give the Giants the 6-4 advantage.

Marshall thought he’d added to his tally and got Wigan back in front almost immediately, but under immense pressure the effort was chalked off as a No Try by the video referee with the winger forced into touch before he could ground the ball.

Huddersfield looked bright and forced a goal line drop out just after the half hour to put Wigan under some pressure and it paid as interchange George King powered over from close range to extend their lead, with Flanagan adding the extras in front of the sticks to see the Giants in with the 12-4 lead at the turnaround.

Wigan were quick to respond from the restart as a high kick on the last from Harry Smith was spilled backwards by Flanagan towards the in-goal after a big hit from Jai Field, with the Warriors full-back also pouncing on the loose ball to score. Adam Keighran was on target this time as the Warriors reduced their deficit to just two-points.

The hosts increased their advantage back to 8-points on 55 minutes though, after Leroy Cudjoe ran the ball up to the line, from the play-the-ball a fired pass to Joe Greenwood saw the towering second rower crash over. Flanagan made it three from three with the boot for 18-10 in Huddersfield’s favour.

Wigan tried their luck through Junior Nsemba just after the hour before he was wrapped up for a turnover, before the introduction of Patrick Mago on 66 minutes ignited some go forward for Wigan, but a pass to the left edge found touch before Liam Marshall was then stopped in his tracks as Huddersfield continued to deny the Warriors going into the final 10 minutes.

Wigan’s persistence paid as Jack Farrimond got Wigan over again in the 73rd minute, with space on the left Jai Field flashed through the defence before getting a pass inside to Jack Farrimond at speed to dive over the whitewash for Wigan’s third of the afternoon. Adam Keighran converted the score as Wigan sat two-points adrift with 5 minutes to play.

A late flurry from Jack Farrimond saw him dive over for his second of the afternoon on 79 minutes, snatching the two-points out of Huddersfield’s grasp as Liam Marshall converted the late score from the touchline to see Wigan to a 22-18 victory in Round 14.

  • Rugby’s great wanderer Christian Wade: ‘You don’t say no to Wigan’

Rugby’s great wanderer Christian Wade: ‘You don’t say no to Wigan’

For a man who has done it all in rugby union and experienced the bright lights of the NFL, the glint in Christian Wade’s eye when asked what drew him to a new challenge with Wigan suggests this was an opportunity he couldn’t miss.

It has been some fortnight for one of the Premiership’s all-time greats. His farewell appearance for Gloucester – and perhaps in rugby union altogether – ended with victory against Northampton and two tries. The second of those was a sensational long-range finish in the dying embers of that game which would have caught the eye of any Wigan supporters keenly checking out what their new signing is capable of.

Christian Wade of Gloucester runs towards the try-line to score against Bristol

The following day, he was in a car heading north to begin his new career as a rugby league player. Introductions done on Monday, by Wednesday he was thrust into his first Wigan training session and asked by his head coach, Matt Peet, if he fancied testing himself in a reserve match the following evening despite only two hours on the field learning a new sport.

His response? Exactly what you would expect from a player who has made it his business to take risks. “Obviously,” he said, smiling. “If not now, when will it be? Let’s do it.” So five days removed from a full house at Kingsholm, Wade was now playing in front of a couple of hundred people – which included Peet – in the slightly less glamorous surroundings of Castleford, completing around an hour.

A Super League debut may be a while away yet, with Wade pencilled in for a second reserves outing next weekend before Wigan reassess the situation. The 34-year-old is understanding of the fact it will take time to be deemed ready, with few players successfully making the transition from union to league with great success in recent years.

“There’s been a lot of league people gone into union and become good defence coaches which helps,” he says. “But the attack side of it … playing in that game last week I was like, which way are we attacking? What are we doing? The shape of the attacks are so different and there are a lot less stoppages – only when you score. But it’s good fun. I’m enjoying it.”

    Christian Wade playing for Gloucester

The transition had been happening even before that hastily arranged debut last week, with Wade revealing he has been watching clips of Wigan for weeks to prepare himself as best as possible. But he admits nothing will steel him for his new challenge better than playing games and being thrust into the thick of it.

“That was a humbling experience at Castleford,” he says. “But it was exciting to just get out there and play because the season is well under way in league. So it was good to get that baptism of fire and get it out of the way. I’ll only be better for that and the next games I play.”

League has been on Wade’s radar previously. Before attempting to launch an NFL life in 2019 he was sounded out by Toronto Wolfpack, a move that failed to materialise. But having crossed paths with so many Wigan greats throughout his career, and despite holding talks about a new deal with Gloucester, when the Warriors came calling, there was only ever going to be one answer.

“They’re probably one of the biggest brands in either code of rugby, right?” he says. “It’s Wigan. You don’t say no to Wigan. They’re the first league team everyone knows. Jason Robinson was my idol.

I worked with Shaun Edwards. Then throw guys like Martin Offiah in too. Gloucester were talking about next season but when I spoke to Wigan, their vision just aligned with mine.”

But what really appears to excite Wade is that even now, as retirement comes a little closer, he has the chance to start afresh and make an impact in a fresh environment, perhaps underlining why he has been so keen to try new things before. Indeed, Wigan insiders are said to already be impressed with Wade’s attitude.

Christian Wade in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills

“Making a move like this means you can’t be complacent because you have to come in and try and earn the respect of a whole new group of people,” Wade says. “I’m trying to learn this game and I don’t want to be the guy who lets the team down, and I’ve got to set the standard.

“It’s exciting. It’s not that I was bored of what happened before, I’ll always give 110%. But I love new challenges and I am better for the experiences I’ve had before, too. It all sets me up for this great opportunity.”

Clearly, given Wade’s rollercoaster career, the door can never fully be shut on a return to union. But if this is the end, does he leave with any regrets? “Absolutely not. It’s not been straightforward; people will always see the successes but they don’t know what happens behind closed doors.

“I pride myself on my career. I’ve busted doors open to make sure I make the most of every opportunity. That will be no different here. The story is still being written too.”

Wade’s short-term deal only lasts until the end of the Super League season in October. What happens beyond that? “Let’s just see how it goes,” he insists.

“It’s open-ended. I haven’t planned to do six months here then go back to union. Similarly, I haven’t thought I’ll do this, sign an extension or go to another Super League team. Let’s just enjoy the ride.”

  • How Wigan Warriors are preparing for Dewsbury challenge as surprising Las Vegas comparison drawn

How Wigan Warriors are preparing for Dewsbury challenge as surprising Las Vegas comparison drawn

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet has drawn a surprising likeness between the fields of the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and the FLAIR Stadium in Dewsbury, where his side will take on Huddersfield Giants this weekend.

The Giants‘ usual home, the John Smith’s Stadium, is unavailable due to a Stereophonics concert being held there.

Accordingly, Saturday afternoon’s Round 14 Super League clash had to be re-located, and the venue booked in was the home of League 1 outfit Dewsbury Rams.

The Rams – who were relegated from the Championship at the end of last season – are yet to taste Super League, and this will be the first top-flight game held at the FLAIR Stadium in the summer era.

But that hasn’t fazed Wigan, whose preparations have very much been as normal.

Back in Round 3, Wigan made history by winning the first-ever Super League game held in America. The Warriors beat Warrington Wolves 48-24 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Ahead of their clash with Huddersfield, Cherry and Whites head coach Peet revealed that the pitch dimensions in Vegas and Dewsbury aren’t all too dissimilar.

Speaking in Wednesday’s pre-match press conference, he detailed: “We don’t really have to (change our preparations) because it’s quite similar to our training field here at Robin Park.

“Some weeks here, we go on the field at the stadium. That isn’t an option anyway this week, but we’re alright.

“It (Dewsbury) is comparable to our training field and it’s comparable to the game we played over in Las Vegas, so it’s different, but it’s not brand new.

“We’re all for it, and we like the thought of playing somewhere different.

“You’ve got to embrace the challenges in this game, and all of these different opportunities. That’s the way we’re looking at it.”

As the hosts on Saturday, the Giants have been able to visit the FLAIR Stadium in the build-up to the game and use the field there as a training base.

Peet continued: “I think they’ll be freshened up by the fact it’s at Dewsbury and I think that adds a fresh angle to it. We’re really excited about the challenge.

“It’s somewhere that some of the lads won’t have played before, and the atmosphere will probably be better than Huddersfield.

“Sometimes the crowd gets lost at Huddersfield’s ground, so I think this will have a different feel to it with it being tighter.

“It might bring a better atmosphere and a better energy.”

Luke Thompson (left) and Christian Wade (right) in action for Wigan Warriors in 2025

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet has confirmed rugby union convert Christian Wade will wait a little longer for his Super

League debut, while prop Luke Thompson could also miss Saturday’s game against Huddersfield Giants.

Winger Wade joined Wigan from union outfit Gloucester following the end of their Premiership Rugby campaign just a few weeks ago.

Within a few days, he’d been thrust into his first taste of rugby league action, involved in a reserves game for the Warriors against Castleford Tigers.

After that appearance at The Jungle, speculation emerged of whether he would make the step up to senior level in Super League when Peet’s side take on Huddersfield this weekend.

But any thoughts of a debut have now been shut down, at least for the time being.

Wigan Warriors coach confirms Christian Wade selection decision

The Cherry and Whites will face the Giants at Dewsbury Rams’ FLAIR Stadium on Saturday afternoon with the John Smith’s Stadium unavailable due to a concert.

In Tuesday afternoon’s pre-match press conference, Peet confirmed his decision on Wade, detailing: ” He won’t play. He’s going to have another game in our reserves next week at St Helens, and then we’ll re-assess.

“We have to acknowledge the fact that Christian is new to rugby league, but also, he’s just come off the back of a long, hard season (at Gloucester).

“It was always agreed that we would freshen him up a little bit and accelerate his learning through practice and reserve games.

“Then, he’s there to be called upon if and when.”

Wade, who turned 34 last month, has only penned a short-term deal at Wigan which runs until the end of the season. Rugby league is the third sport he’s tried his hand at professionally after union and American Football.

Peet continued: “All of the skills that made him a success in rugby union are transferable skills in terms of his athleticism and how he carries the ball. But more important is his attitude to learn quickly and to apply himself.

“He’s mixed into the group really well, I think he won a lot of friends with how he put his hand up to play for the reserves last week on so short a turnaround from the end of his Gloucester career.

“I put it to him as an option to fast-track him, and he was very keen. He didn’t give it a second thought.

“You wouldn’t get that many sportsmen who’d be that keen to throw themselves into a game with less than a week’s recovery and only one training session. I was impressed.”

Matt Peet delivers update on injured prop Luke Thompson ahead of Huddersfield clash

Wigan are on an eight-game winning streak in Super League having thumped Salford Red Devils 46-6 prior to the competition’s break for the Challenge Cup final.

That win at Salford was achieved without a number of first-team regulars, with Peet using the opportunity to rotate his side and hand some players well-deserved rests.

Thompson was one of the absentees having broken his ribs the week prior against Catalans Dragons, and providing an update on the prop, Peet said: “He’s still in a little bit of pain, but he could play at a push.

“It’s whether we decide to take that step just yet or let him heal a little bit more before we throw him in.”

    Christian Wade’s first outing

Wigan’s new signing Christian Wade only linked up with his new teammates last Wednesday following the conclusion of his rugby union commitments with Gloucester, and he played his first rugby league game the following day! The 34-year-old, who has joined Wigan on a short-term contract for the remainder of the 2025 campaign, started on the wing for the reserves in their win over Castleford Tigers at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle on Thursday evening.

Wade, a former British & Irish Lions representative, played around 52 minutes before coming off the field. He didn’t get on the scoresheet, but he did provide an assist for Jack Farrimond. Could he make his official debut for the Warriors in this Saturday’s game against Huddersfield? His coach Matt Peet will probably provide an update on that in his press conference later this week.

    A trip to unfamiliar surroundings

Having had no game last weekend due to the Challenge Cup finals taking place at Wembley, Peet’s side are back in action this Saturday against Huddersfield Giants at the FLAIR Stadium in Dewsbury.

The Round 14 match was scheduled to take place at the John Smith’s Stadium, but it has been moved over to the neighbouring town of Dewsbury due to a Stereophonics concert taking place at the usual home of the Giants.

It will be the first time Wigan have played at the FLAIR Stadium since 2016, when Shaun Wane’s Warriors ran out comfortable 54-4 winners against Dewsbury Rams in a Challenge Cup sixth-round tie.

Her teammates Anna Davies (176) and Mary Coleman (161) came second and third respectively.
