George Hirst in: Realistic last-minute transfers Burnley FC should try and secure

It was universally accepted that attacking reinforcements were the primary aim of this window, but so far, Ashley Barnes, who’s barely played since joining, is the only attacker they’ve signed.

Missing out on Morgan Whittaker certainly hasn’t helped their quest to add some quality in the final third, but there’s a whole world of players out there, and Scott Parker and Alan Pace ought to have been smart enough to have other targets lined up.

A lack of goals has exacerbated Burnley’s need for reinforcements up top, with a striker and winger probably non-negotiable in these closing days of the window, but it’s all quiet on the western front so far.

Here, we look at three possible players the Clarets could look at in the coming days…

Scott Parker likes players with previous promotion experience, and George Hirst is one of them, attaining promotion out of this division with Ipswich last season, but since promotion he’s endured a tumultuous time, making most of his appearances off the bench.

Injuries haven’t helped his campaign, nor has the big-money arrival of Liam Delap, who is firmly Ipswich’s first-choice striker and won’t be displaced but for an injury.

With Sammie Szmodics, who has also largely played in forward areas for Town, back from injury any time now, Hirst could be pushed even further down the pecking order.

That’s when Burnley could look to make a late swoop to offer him regular first team football up front for the rest of the season if they can take him on loan, while they could also offer Ipswich the guarantee of a sale if they’re promoted.

It seems likely that Emmanuel Dennis will depart Nottingham Forest on loan in the closing stages of the window, and both Watford and Sheffield Wednesday have previously been credited with an interest in the forward.

With the ability to play anywhere along the front line, Dennis could be a useful asset to Burnley, and the hefty salary which has put some other suitors off wouldn’t be quite as big of an issue to Burnley, who are in receipt of parachute payments.

Dennis may not be a long-term solution for the Clarets, but he could definitely have some short-term use, and ultimately it’s about getting over the line somewhat May.

He’s a proven scorer in English football, and the magic moments he could provide are something Burnley have sorely missed this season.

Charlie Taylor is a name that Burnley fans will be incredibly familiar with as he plied his trade at Turf Moor for seven years, but departed for Southampton in the summer after his contract expired. It seems that Taylor is available on loan this month and Hull City had agreed a deal with the Saints, but the move has since stalled, with Watford now also credited with an interest in Taylor.

Left back isn’t a huge problem area for the Clarets, with Bashir Humphreys plugging that gap admirably for most of the campaign, but behind him, Burnley’s only other option is Lucas Pires, who Parker has repeatedly shown that he won’t trust in big games.

If anything is to happen to Humphreys, then Parker would have to trust someone who he evidently doesn’t trust, which has the potential to derail Burnley’s promotion push.

Bears explore Ben Johnson connection by signing Lions receiver

The Bears can always use return and receiver help, especially from someone familiar with Ben Johnson’s offense and they added a former Detroit practice squad player Friday.

    In this story:

Lions and Saints coaches with Ben Johnson ties have been brought in over the course of the last week by the Bears and now it’s a player.

Although free agency doesn’t start until March 10 with the legalized tampering period, former Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander was signed by the Bears Friday to a futures contract.

A slot receiver type at 5-foot-11, 174 pounds, the 28-year-old from Florida International has been a practice squad player for the Lions who got into seven games total for Detroit over the 2022 and 2024 seasons. He played in the USFL in 2022 before the NFL season and made 20 catches for 234 yards.

He caught only one pass for 7 yards but displayed some special teams ability by averaging 24.3 yards on six kick returns in 2022, with a long of 47 yards. HE also returned four punts this past season for a very healthy 10.5-yard average.

The Bears used DeAndre Carter in the return game until a hamstring injury against the 49ers in December. Carter averaged 31.9 yards for 15 kick returns and 9.3 for his 17 punts returned. His kick return average was third-highest in the league for anyone with at least 12 returns.

Carter was working on a one-year contract in 2024.

  • Predicted Southampton lineup vs Ipswich Town: Albert Gronbaek to start?

Predicted Southampton lineup vs Ipswich Town: Albert Gronbaek to start?

Ramsdale’s absence was felt last week. That being said, let’s hope that the shot-stopper marks his return with a statement performance.

    LB – Ryan Manning.

Manning must start as his crosses could give Southampton the lead, again.

    CB – Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

A defensive change is needed but Harwood-Bellis will still be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Ivan Juric must drop Bree and pair Bednarek alongside Harwood-Bellis. Also, the 28-year-old will want to score in the third consecutive game as well.

Without a doubt, the best fullback in Southampton’s squad. Further, he has stepped up his defensive efforts recently.

Being fit, Sulemana must hit the ground running straightaway. Notably, his partnership with Manning could help unlock the Ipswich defence.

Aribo will start again but with only four defenders, could be given a more defensive role.

    CM – Lesley Ugochukwu.

Visibly exhausted last week against Newcastle. Having a week’s time, should be back to his best form.

    RM – Albert Gronbaek.

In all honesty, Gronbaek holds the key to Juric’s midfield problems. The winger should be given the freedom to anchor Southampton’s attack.

    CF – Mateus Fernandes.

Sparks energy and vibrancy up front. Also, playing centrally would allow him to take more shots on goal.

    ST – Paul Onuachu.

Rushing Tyler Dibling from his injury wouldn’t be a wise idea. As a result, Juric must retain his faith in Onuachu to deliver the goals once again.

  • Ipswich Town: McKenna on Chaplin, Woolfenden and January transfers

Ipswich Town: McKenna on Chaplin, Woolfenden and January transfers

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has been discussing his hopes for the final few days of the January transfer window. (Image: PA)

Kieran McKenna says his gut feeling is that there won’t be any more ins or outs at Ipswich Town before the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday.

The Blues have signed defender Ben Godfrey (Atalanta, loan), winger Jaden Philogene (Aston Villa, £20m) and attacker Julio Enciso (Brighton, loan) so far this month.

It’s been reported nationally that the club still wants to add a midfielder, winger and striker in the coming days, but McKenna poured cold water on those claims at this afternoon’s press conference.

“If you ask what my gut feeling is, it’s that the squad is there or thereabouts of what it’s going to be,” said the Blues boss, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s crunch clash with Southampton at Portman Road.

“That doesn’t mean the club isn’t working very, very hard on different situations to see if there’s an area we can improve.

“But, yeah, at the moment my feeling and my focus is that the players we have here are going to be what we go through to the end of the season with and compete with.”0:00

    >On whether he’ll sign a replacement for winger Wes Burns, who has been ruled out for the season with an ACL knee injury, the Blues boss said: “Wes and Chieo Ogbene are pretty unique profiles for us, their qualities are so important to our system, and we’ve lost both of them for the season. So it’s a blow.

“But we have good depth in the squad and other players who can fill the role in other ways with different qualities.

“We’re not going to make any panicked decisions in the transfer market. If there are players that can really help us and improve us then we’ll look to do it, but we’re not going to add numbers just for the sake of cover.”

On reports suggesting there’s interest in Luke Woolfenden (Sheffield United) and Conor Chaplin (Stoke), he said: “Has there? I’ve not seen that. Where’s Chappers going? News to me.

“I wouldn’t expect there to be any more outgoings, to be honest. In football you can never say never, but I wouldn’t expect there to be any more.”

Asked if he felt the club had done enough in this transfer window to be fully prepared for the Premier League relegation fight ahead, McKenna replied: “I don’t think you’ll ever feel like you’ve done enough, as such.

“Look, we’ve tried to improve our squad. The three players we’ve brought in we feel certainly improve the squad.

“Jaden (Philogene) is someone we will can have a long-term impact at the club. Julio (Enciso) and Ben (Godfrey) are two players, even though Julio is young, who have more Premier League experience and who can help the squad for now.

“We’re in a better position than we were at the first of January.

“Of course we want the squad to be a strong as possible. In an ideal world there could have been one or two more pieces of movement.

“But it’s a really difficult window, especially as a club in our position that’s had the climb we’ve had.

“We’ve added three. If that’s the end of it then we’ll crack on with what we’ve got and fight until the end of the season. If we can make any additions that bring us to another level then we’ll try and do so.”

  • Ipswich Town vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

Ipswich Town vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

Three points will be of utmost importance when Ipswich Town and Southampton meet at Portman Road on Saturday.

The 2024/25 Premier League season resumes this weekend as Gameweek 24 begins on Saturday. The latest round of fixtures kicks off with the game between Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion at City Ground before the action continues with four simultaneous matches, including Ipswich Town vs Southampton at Portman Road.

Ipswich Town and Southampton have struggled for most of the 2024/25 Premier League season, although the Saints have been dreadful throughout the campaign thus far. The visitors have been at the foot of the Premier League table for much of this term.

Russell Martin could not galvanise his troops, and Ivan Juric has not fared much better, either. With Southampton managing only one win and six points in 23 Premier League appearances thus far, only a miracle can help them avoid relegation from the top flight.

As for Ipswich Town, the Tractor Boys have been more resilient than the other promoted teams. However, failure to string a winning streak has been their undoing, with Kieran McKenna’s men losing their last three matches. The run has left the home side second from bottom in the Premier League standings, although they are only a point behind 17th-placed Leicester City.

The reverse fixture saw Ipswich Town come from a goal down to hold Southampton to a 1-1 draw, with captain Samy Morsy rescuing a point for his team. The Hard Tackle looks closer at the encounter ahead of the latest meeting between the two sides.

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Walton; Tuanzebe, O’Shea, Greaves, Davis; Phillips, Cajuste; Hutchinson, Enciso, Philogene; Delap

    Southampton

Probable Lineup (3-4-1-2): Ramsdale; Bree, Bednarek, Harwood-Bellis; Sugawara, Aribo, Ugochukwu, Walker-Peters; Fernandes; Armstrong, Onuachu

Ipswich Town are unbeaten in the last four league matches vs Southampton (W2 D2) and won both meetings in the 2023/24 EFL Championship season. However, Southampton’s most recent Premier League game at Portman Road was a 3-1 win in March 2002.

Ipswich Town have lost their last three matches by an aggregate score of 12-1. In addition, they have conceded four or more goals in successive Premier League games for the first time. The Tractor Boys have lost eight of their 11 most recent Premier League matches (W2 D1), keeping one clean sheet in their last 19 top-flight fixtures.

Southampton are in danger of losing seven consecutive league games for the first time in their history. Their points tally (6) is the lowest by any side at this stage of a Premier League season.

Southampton have dropped 20 points from winning positions in the 2024/25 Premier League season, second only to Tottenham. In addition, the Saints have won just one of their last 36 Premier League fixtures. They are on a 13-match run without victory since beating Everton at St. Mary’s in November.

Ipswich Town have made a league-high 66 changes to their starting line-up this term.

With goalscoring an issue for both teams, Adam Armstrong, Paul Onuachu, and Omari Hutchinson were viable candidates for this section. However, we have picked Liam Delap as our Player to Watch, considering his exploits in his breakthrough Premier League campaign. But the last few weeks have seen him being in prominence due to his disciplinary issues.

Delap has conceded 48 fouls in this season’s Premier League, second only to Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes. The Englishman has been cautioned eight times, including five in his last eight appearances. However, Kieran McKenna will hope that tag eludes the Englishman and that he delivers the goods in the final third.

Ivan Juric has struggled to galvanise the Southampton squad this season, and the Saints have struggled to even rack up a point. While they tend to go ahead in games, no other team has dropped more points than them in the Premier League.

So, while Southampton will give the hosts a run for their money, the Tractor Boys should script a comeback that can define their 2024/25 Premier League campaign. Liam Delap should rise to the occasion and deliver the goods in the final third. The Hard Tackle predicts a 2-1 win for Kieran McKenna and his charges.

  • Ipswich Town now pushing to sign new 76-career goal forward before deadline

Ipswich Town now pushing to sign new 76-career goal forward before deadline

Ipswich Town are working to sign a new international forward before Monday evening’s transfer deadline.

Ipswich Town’s January signings so far

The Tractor Boys have been busy so far in 2025, adding a number of new players to Kieran McKenna’s squad as they look to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

“We’ll have to wait and see. Look, we’ll go to the last day and try to improve the squad in any way possible. We have enough depth in the squad. It’s only if we can add players who we think can have a really big impact on the starting 11 or the matchday squad and improve us over the remaining games. If we can do that, we’ll do it. If that’s not possible we have good depth, everyone’s on board and everyone’s hungry.

“When you do your best you can only ever be satisfied. We worked hard in the summer, we’re working hard now and we worked hard in between to try and improve the squad as much as we can.

“That’s really, really hard to do when you’re a club that’s come from where we’ve come from. It’s a real challenge and balancing act in so many different things.

“We’ve got ourselves into a position where we have good depth, a good mix of qualities throughout the squad and a group of players desperate to do well. That’s a pretty good place to be.”

They have been linked with Sheffield United youngster Ryan One in recent days, but a new experienced target has emerged.

Ipswich Town working to sign striker Bayo

According to reports in France, Ipswich Town are making a move to sign Lille striker Mohamed Bayo before February 3. The report states that Ipswich have made concrete steps to sign Bayo, as have Turkish side Besiktas, with a decision to be made on his future very soon.

Bayo is reportedly expected to leave Lille before the deadline, and a move to England with Ipswich appears to be possible.

The 26-year-old is a Guinea international and has spent his entire club career in France, coming through at Clermont Foot before his move to Lille in 2022.

In total, Bayo has scored 76 career goals for club and country and is under contract with Lille until 2027, so it will be interesting to see what kind of fee the forward may move for.

Transfermarkt value the striker at just €4m, so perhaps Ipswich could land the attacker for a similar sum, making this one to watch.

  • Premier League opponent preview: Ipswich Town – Form, Best players and more

Premier League opponent preview: Ipswich Town – Form, Best players and more

Southampton fans, January is finally over. Honestly, this month was a testing period for Southampton both on and off the pitch.

Looking at the Premier League, the situation hasn’t changed differently. As a matter of fact, the Saints lost all four of their scheduled Premier League games.

Considering the opponents they have faced, Southampton were held back due to a challenging fixture list. Nevertheless, the club might be on to some relatively easier hurdles now.

Tomorrow, Southampton will kickoff February with an away visit to Ipswich Town. The Tractor boys have also witnessed the hardships of the Premier League similar to the Saints, accompanying them at 19th place.

Unfortunately, the actual Premier League story is significantly different than expected. Ipswich have taken four points from their previous five games and have opened a ten point lead over Southampton.

Safe to say, Southampton will want to be in Ipswich’s shoes at the moment. However, these results are the compounded efforts of great squad planning in the preseason.

Kieran McKenna led Ipswich Town boast of consistent players like Arijanet Muric, Dara O’Shea and Sammie Szmodics. Add to them, the talents of Liam Delap, Omari Hutchinson and Julio Enciso, Ipswich is clearly a force to reckon with.

Southampton also agrees with it having experienced their competitiveness earlier. The two sides met at St. Mary’s where Ipswich Town scored a late equaliser to split points in the Premier League.

Interestingly, Tyler Dibling bagged his first Southampton goal in that game. As people say, time flies quickly, Dibling is expectedly on the brink of a massive transfer away from Southampton.

Coming to the head-to-head records, Ipswich Town has dominated this statistic in recent years. According to AiScore, Southampton have twice ended on the losing side in their previous three clashes.

Optimistically, all three matches have been largely balanced thus, Southampton does stand a chance to win. Let’s wait and watch to see whether it happens.
