Aston Villa star outlines FA Cup dream as Unai Emery ponders West Ham selection

The World Cup-winning goalkeeper has made ending the club’s 28-year trophy drought his primary aim this season.

Villa are in the race to qualify for European football through the Premier League and also well placed to reach the last-16 of the Champions League.

But Martinez, who won the FA Cup with Arsenal in 2020, wants a trip to Wembley.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s third round tie with West Ham, he said: “I want silverware for the club. I want a cup run and I was very frustrated to be knocked out by Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.

“I think the fans deserve to be in Wembley at the end of the season. It is something missing for the club for many years. I want cups and I know the feeling it brings for myself and the fans.”

Martinez did not play when Villa lost to Palace in October with Joe Gauci replacing him between the sticks and the Argentina international has often been rested by Emery for domestic cup ties.

But he has made clear his desire to be involved when Villa host the Hammers in a tie which has also been billed as the club’s 150th anniversary match.

Emery admitted the fact Villa are playing on Friday, giving them an extra day to prepare for Wednesday’s Premier League match at Everton, may allow him to play a stronger team.

The cup tie is the first of seven games in 22 days for Villa, a run which also includes important Champions League dates with Monaco and Celtic.

Emery acknowledged this is the point of the season his squad must show its strength.

“We are not complaining because we have to be ready to play and take this mentality,” he said.

“When we were playing two years ago, we were playing one match per week because we were out of the FA Cup, Carabao Cup.

“Of course, we were preparing well for each match but we weren’t playing in the cups and we have been playing in Europe and the FA Cup.

“We are very happy. We are having more matches and adding more difficulties. But we are happy and having experiences here.

“Of course, in the squad we need players to be ready. We want to try to be competitive in each competition. Now it’s the moment to show it, tomorrow, next week and in the Champions League.”

Despite Martinez’s words, Emery said he was prepared to make tough decisions should he decide players are in need of a rest.

“Some players want to play in each match,” he said. “It’s impossible to respond at the level you try to get in each match.

“This is the opportunity I have to manage the players the squad and to identify each moment.

“I have to take time myself to analyse and prepare as best as possible each match. Tactically, trying to set each playe

    r in the good moments.”

Ipswich now open talks to sign “incredible” new striker alongside Philogene

With Jaden Philogene seemingly set to arrive, Ipswich Town have reportedly instantly opened talks to sign another attacking reinforcement who’s been given the green light to leave his current club.

The Tractor Boys certainly aren’t going down without a fight in the Premier League, as recent victory against Chelsea and a dramatic 2-2 draw with Fulham highlighted, before they turned towards the transfer market and Philogene. The winger looks destined to finally arrive after Ipswich missed out on his signature to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window, with a medical booked and £21m deal reportedly agreed.

Following a frustrating return to Villa Park, Philogene could finally discover his best form in the Premier League for the first time and help Kieran McKenna’s side to safety. But those at Portman Road are seemingly not done there on the transfer front.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Ipswich have now opened preliminary talks to sign Kelechi Iheanacho on loan from Sevilla, who have given the striker the green light to complete a move away for the rest of the campaign.

Ipswich target unreal £30m Delap rival who’s been “blowing teams away”

Potentially returning quickly to English football after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season, Iheanacho’s experience could prove to be key in the race to secure Premier League safety – particularly next to the youthful exuberance of Liam Delap and Philogene.

Suddenly, McKenna could have quite the strike partnership on his hands between two former Manchester City players.

    “Incredible” Iheanacho has vital experience

There may have been some concern that Ipswich were not targeting those experienced enough to keep them in the Premier League but the Iheanacho rumours should silence any doubters. The former Leicester City forward has been there and done it in England’s top flight – be it in a relegation battle or fighting for bigger honours in the top half. And now, his experience could prove to be vital.

A clinical striker at times for the Foxes, Iheanacho was often at the centre of Brendan Rodgers’ praise. The former Leicester manager told reporters as relayed by The Independent in 2021: “He’s a talented player and I think of the difference in him tonight than when we played Crystal Palace last time.

“When we played them around the Christmas period, he wasn’t playing so much, and when you are a striker in particular that rhythm of games is important. Over the last few months he’s been absolutely incredible. It’s not just (his goal) – he has no ego whatsoever, he works so hard.”

Still just 28 years old, Iheanacho could now get one last chance to make his mark in the Premier League once again.

Aston Villa receive new referee audio after Jhon Duran red card

It has been revealed that Anthony Taylor sent off Jhon Duran in Aston Villa’s defeat at Newcastle despite being advised by two of his on-field colleagues that the striker did not merit a red card.

Duran was dismissed after being adjudged to have stamped on Fabian Schar following a tackle from the Newcastle centre-back. Referee Taylor pulled out the red card and VAR Graham Scott agreed with the on-field decision shortly after examining the footage.

In the latest edition of Match Officials Mic’d Up, PGMOL chief Howard Webb took a look at the incident, including the match audio from the officials involved. The below transcript reveals how Taylor took decisive action after noticing that Schar was “holding somewhere else” on his body following contact from Duran.

  • Unthinkable West Ham plan coming together as Aston Villa make mind-boggling double move

Unthinkable West Ham plan coming together as Aston Villa make mind-boggling double move

No club needs to sign a striker more than West Ham this month and it’s a position that needs addressing least at Aston Villa.

Yet Aston Villa are raising eyebrows as they appear to make signing several new forwards their priority too.

West Ham already needed a new forward before losing Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen to broken bones.

It leaves the Hammers relying on injury-prone 31-year-old Niclas Fullkrug – who is reportedly unsettled and could be sold this month – and 32-year-old misfit Danny Ings.

West Ham fans have been tortured over the club’s decision to sign Fullkrug over Aston Villa star Jhon Duran.

While Fullkrug has lived up to his reputation for being injury-prone by spending three months out with an Achilles and calf issue, Duran has been a revelation at Villa.

Compared to the Hammers, Aston Villa are spoilt for choice up front with Ollie Watkins and Duran battling it out.

Duran is the one that stings for the Hammers, though.

After doing the crossed Hammers in a live social media video amid talk of an imminent move to West Ham in the summer, Duran looked set for a move to east London.

Unthinkable West Ham plan coming together

Fans are still not over the fact Duran could and should be their number one striker after Tim Steidten decided to spread his £45m forward budget over the signings of Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme.

Rather inevitably the Colombian scored the winner against the Irons when coming on as a substitute in the first game of the season.

Being on the bench in the first place is one thing that has continued to give West Ham hope they may be able to sign Duran in the future.

Especially with West Ham expecting to sell Mohammed Kudus for at least £85m in the summer.

It was recently claimed West Ham still have a long-term plan to try and sign the Aston Villa hot head.

Duran remains a long-term target for West Ham because the club believe his desire to be an undisputed main striker could play into their hands.

Relations between Duran and Unai Emery have at times been strained.

Duran conceded there was a chance he was going to move to the London Stadium.

And he even admitted his desire to be the main striker coupled with a lack of patience means he may still want that at another club

It is seen as significant then that Emery is being linked with moves for several new forwards – which will only serve to irritate Duran further.

First Villa were linked with a move to hijack West Ham’s own interest in PSG outcast Randal Kolo Muani.

Now that unthinkable West Ham plan could be coming together as Aston Villa make a mind-boggling double move.

Villa’s mind-boggling double move gives Hammers Duran hope

When it was claimed Duran remains top of West Ham’s striker target shortlist over the next two windows, it looked far-fetched.

    .

But are we now seeing why the Hammers feel there is still a chance.

Because Aston Villa are not only in negotiations to sign Dutch forward Donyell Malen from Dortmund but they are bidding for an international striker too.

Villa have made an improved bid of £15million plus add-ons for Borussia Dortmund’s Malen – once wanted at West Ham by Moyes.

The Dutchman can play as a striker but is used more off the left or right.

Now Villa are also in for Atalanta and Italy striker Meto Retegui according to La Repubblica.

Despite having Watkins and Duran vying for their number nine spot, Emery now wants Retegui too.

What West Ham would give for these kind of options and ambition.

But Villa going after the likes of Muani, Malen and now Retegui surely makes Duran’s departure even more likely.

So West Ham’s belief they may get another chance to sign the Colombian does not look so ridiculous after all.

West Ham will never have a better chance of signing Duran if Villa pull off these ambitious moves.

Duran is already miffed he has to compete with Watkins for a starting spot.

So he will not be happy at increased competition and has showed he can be a difficult character to handle when he’s not starting.

  • What Jack Grealish did to John McGinn proves Unai Emery right as Jhon Duran makes Aston Villa statement

What Jack Grealish did to John McGinn proves Unai Emery right as Jhon Duran makes Aston Villa statement

Jack Grealish was booed by Aston Villa fans in Man City’s defeat at Villa Park
Aston Villa won consecutive home league games against Man City for the first time since April 1993 after beating Pep Guardiola’s side 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Jhon Duran broke the deadlock early on by finishing past Stefan Ortega after being picked out by Morgan Rogers inside the box. The former Man City man then turned scorer, bagging Villa’s second just after the hour mark before Phil Foden halved City’s deficit in the third of four minutes added on at the end of the second half.
Villa have now defeated the reigning top-flight champions at home in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1975-76 (against Derby) and 1976-77 (against Liverpool). The victory lifted them above City in the league table ahead of facing Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Boxing Day and then hosting Brighton before the New Year.
Emery struck the perfect Villa blend
Emery has strength in depth and a number of options to play in different ways. Against City, the Villa boss fielded a perfect blend of players in a system he knew would be able to not only contain but also attack City in the right moments.
It was the first time in which Boubacar Kamara and £50m summer arrival Amadou Onana started together. That allowed Youri Tielemans to play higher up the pitch with more freedom in a role which he operated effectively in last term.
John McGinn had plenty of joy on the left with the space afforded to him between Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol, while Morgan Rogers – on the opposite flank – was unplayable at times. Just like in the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal back in August, Rogers had opposition players hanging off his back as he progressed up the pitch with the ball under his control.
He had final product too as he delivered a goal and an assist in a Premier League game for the first time since joining Villa last year. At the top of the pitch, Duran continued to impress, not only by scoring, but in how he led the line and worked hard out of possession.
In defence, Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa kept Erling Haaland quiet, limiting him to only 18 touches in the 90 minutes, 11 of which were in the first period. For that, credit also goes to Matty Cash and Lucas, who helped stop the supply to the big Norwegian.
It goes without saying that the game plan Emery deployed for Saturday won’t be one he can use against every team, but it showed the versatility he can call on. Leon Bailey was coming back from injury and Diego Carlos was sidelined with a knock, meaning Ezri Konsa and Cash both had to play in the back four, but those restrictions weren’t to the deficit of the team due to its depth.
On the right, Emery turned to McGinn, who has earned lots of praise from the Villa manager because of his ability to play across numerous roles. Kamara and Onana gave Tielemans the keys to pick the lock further forward, meaning Rogers moved out wide. Five or six of Villa’s players can be used in a variety of positions and are able to combine to great effect.
City frustration proved Villa’s strong management
Villa needed that second goal to kill City’s confidence and they got it through Rogers when he turned away from Kyle Walker and drove up the pitch before laying the ball off to John McGinn, getting it back inside the box and beating Ortega.
The game then drifted away from City until a mistake from Digne allowed Foden to score from close range. But before that, Villa stifled their visitors and really should have recorded what would have been a successive home clean sheets in the league for the first time since beating City and Arsenal back-to-back in December of last year.
As the clock ticked into the 87th minute, Grealish let his frustrations get the better of him when he kicked a lump out of his mate McGinn. It was a needless foul to make as he left the Villa captain in a heap on the floor. Chants of ‘super John McGinn’ rang around the stadium as Grealish lost his cool.
Really, what Grealish did there proved Emery right about how his Villa side are building strong foundations for success at Villa Park. Now eight league matches unbeaten in front of home fans, and after winning their last three, they’re showing effective game management to see matches out after demonstrating quality in the final to take the lead. City were frustrated by Villa and these are the hallmarks Emery’s side showed when they last won three home league games in a row 12 months ago in a run of 15 such victories on the spin between March and December.
“Always we are trying to be positive, in some matches we are maybe not performing as we want, but today we performed,” Emery said after full-time. “We are feeling strong, here we played the first half very well, in the second half we kept possession more and getting in the box to score the second goal, we imposed and dominated more.”
A day to forget for Grealish
It was a day to forget for Grealish, who made his first start at Villa Park since playing his final game in claret and blue against Chelsea on the final day of the 2021/22 campaign. He had only played four minutes in City’s previous three visits to B6.
The former Villa skipper has now gone 35 appearances without a goal for Man City in all competitions, but that wasn’t the sole reason for his anger during and after Saturday’s match.
He impressed in the first half, causing problems for Matty Cash on his wing, but lacked end product. In the second half, Cash had more support from his teammates. Booed throughout, it quickly became a difficult afternoon for Grealish.
At half-time he had a confrontation with Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez as the two went down the tunnel. Even after putting McGinn on the floor, Grealish still had a smile on his face as he went to take set-pieces, but after full-time he reacted to a Villa fan giving him some stick.
Whatever was said, and hopefully it didn’t cross the line, a picture of Grealish holding up three fingers – alluding to the number of league titles he has won away from Villa – won’t vanish. It’s now a stain. “He left ’cause you’re ****” was heard from the City end on a couple of occasions, but as Villa were looking certain to leapfrog Guardiola’s side in the table after Rogers doubled the lead in the second half, “he left ’cause you’re ****” was the chant Villa supporters sang at City fans instead.
It was a stunning performance from Rogers, who once again lit up Villa Park. Emery’s side had to be strong in their defending and keep their shape, which allowed Rogers to express himself in the final third.
He was brave in possession and always willing to take a risk to commit defenders and back himself to roll them and power further forward. He is so hard to step when he goes through the gears.
“He played fantastic,” Emery said of Rogers after full-time. “He is very important. We are getting the performance back through him because he links strikers with midfielders and wingers.
“He was fantastic in the second-half, connecting with strikers and scoring the goals. He has to add goals to his numbers, and today he was fantastic.”
No.9 role is Duran’s to lose
How Rogers is linking with Duran is very encouraging. They’re forming a strong relationship on the pitch already, despite starting together in only three league games this season.
Rogers has, of course, played from the off in all 23 matches Villa have played in the league and the Champions League this term. Duran, meanwhile, has now scored in each of the six starts he has made in all competitions this season.
Only Jamal Musiala (nine) has netted more goals than the seven league goals Duran has bagged in the big-five European leagues in 2024-25, among all players aged 21 or under.
    Don’t miss
    Jack Grealish of Manchester City
The number nine position is now Duran’s to lose under Emery, who opted to keep Ollie Watkins on the bench for the match with City.
“We are in the process with the players keeping their consistency of playing,” Emery said about his two strikers. “Jhon Duran played fantastic. Ollie Watkins is fantastic as well. It is very important for us. Of course you have to work with both strikers, sometimes they play together. I am very happy with them.”
Tielemans thrives with Onana and Kamara protection
Tielemans won the Premier League player of the match award for yet another excellent display. Such a silky footballer, Tielemans is neither the quickest or strongest, but he’s always ahead of his opponent by how he reads the game and sees pictures.
Dancing out of challenges in midfield, he had more freedom to play than usual as he had the protection of a strong double pivot of Onana and Kamara behind him.
“We played really well, some really good football and defended when we needed to,” Tielemans said on TNT Sports. “I’m not here to make the headlines, they (Man CIty) are a really good side and you have to be aware of their threat. They are on a bad run, I’m sure they will get out of it”.
Speaking of his ball to Rogers for Villa’s first goal, the Belgian added: “I saw the space and just tried to pass it as good as I could, so I’m really happy about it.
“I was a bit freer in the role my manager asked me to play in. The fact we were on the ball more meant that we could play our game.
“It is always calculating the risk, if you want to stay on the ball and be brave. But we really deserved the win. We showed we can play good football.”

Morgan Rogers doubled Aston Villa’s advantage in the second half

Aston Villa have secured three successive home league wins for the first time this calendar year after beating champions Man City 2-1 at Villa Park.

Jhon Duran opened the scoring in the 16th minute by finishing from close range after being picked out by Morgan Rogers, before the former Man City man doubled the lead just after the hour mark and Phil Foden scored deep into second half added time. After defeating Pep Guardiola’s side 1-0 last season, Villa have now earned consecutive home league wins against City for the first time since 1993.

Aston Villa starting XI vs Man City predicted as big Ollie Watkins decision made

Duran has now scored six goals in as many starts for Villa this season, but missed a golden chance to put his side ahead in the first minute after John McGinn dispossessed Joskol Gvardiol of the ball in the final third. Duran had a one-on-one ahead with Stefan Ortega, but despite having time, he opted to take his shot early before being denied by the City goalkeeper.

From the resulting corner, Villa came even closer to breaking the deadlock as Pau Torres headed Lucas Digne’s corner towards goal. Ortega managed to claw the ball from off the line before Erling Haaland put it behind the post. That was one of the 11 touches the Norwegian striker managed in the first period.

Villa took the lead after Youri Tielemans played an exquisite through ball to find Rogers bursting towards goal. With Duran by his side, the former City forward rolled the ball across goal for his teammate to convert past Ortega.

Duran thought he had doubled Villa’s lead not long after the start of the second half as he ran clear on goal and finished past Ortega, but he was flagged for offside. Once again it was Tielemans pulling the strings.

Rogers gave Villa a two-goal cushion by finishing the move he started after he breezed past opposition players to drive Villa up the pitch. After John McGinn found him in the box, the England international fired across Ortega to score his second goal in three home league games.

Villa couldn’t quite hold onto a clean sheet after Phil Foden reduced City’s deficit deep into second half added time. Emery’s side take on Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Boxing Day on Wednesday before hosting Brighton on December 30.

    Emi Martinez

Martinez dealt with what came at him well in the first half, before being booked after the half-time whistle for arguing with opposition players. He was furious after being denied what would have been a successive clean sheet at home. 7

    Matty Cash

Cash put a couple of heavy tackles on Grealish in the first 15 minutes. The former Villa captain wanted Cash booked on his second foul before he was cautioned after the following one. Villa’s right-back got to grips with Grealish in the second half and managed to contain him. 7

    Ezri Konsa

Between Torres and Konsa, they kept Haaland quiet throughout. When he strolls through games like this against some of the best forwards in the world, it makes you appreciate just how good Konsa is. 8

    Pau Torres

Torres came within inches of giving Villa the lead when he headed Digne’s cross goalwards. It was a brilliant save by Ortega to keep Torres’ effort out. The Spaniard had a brilliant game against Haaland. 8

    Lucas Digne

Digne showed real quality from corners today, whipping the ball on top of Ortega a few times. His energy down to cover the flank all afternoon is a real underrated part of his game – it takes some doing to do it every game he plays. 7

    Boubacar Kamara

Some player. He’s exactly what City are missing in their midfield now that they’re without Rodri. Kamara was destructive in his tackling and cute with his passing. 8

    Amadou Onana

Onana came into the starting XI as the only change from the team which played against Nottingham Forest last time out. He formed a strong double pivot alongside Kamara. It was the first time he played alongside Kamara from the start. 8

    John McGinn

McGinn had plenty of joy down the right channel early on and caused problems for Gvardiol. City struggled to contain the Villa skipper’s energy. When McGinn plays well, Villa play well. 8

It was Tielemans’ perfectly weighted through ball which set Rogers in on goal, before he rolled it across for Duran to score in the 16th minute. The Belgian operated closer to the striker today, which is a role he excelled in last term. He’s not the quickest, but he’s always one step ahead of his opponent in possession. 8

Rogers recorded his third assist of the season and his first since making two in the win over Wolves back in September. He showed courage on the ball and powered beyond City markers to get Villa up the pitch. 9*

    Jhon Duran

Duran made his third successive league start this afternoon, playing ahead of Ollie Watkins. He had a golden chance to put Villa ahead in the first minute, but he took his effort on too early. It didn’t take him long to atone for missing his first chance as the Colombian ace gave Villa the lead by tapping in after Rogers rolled the ball across the box. 9

  • An insult’ – Aston Villa Jhon Duran transfer plot rejected amid ‘secret talks’

An insult’ – Aston Villa Jhon Duran transfer plot rejected amid ‘secret talks’

A top European side is “crazy” about Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, reportedly holding secret talks with the player’s agent with a view to a transfer “as early as January” – but Birmingham Live readers in our comments section say that the money on offer is nowhere near good enough.

Italian side Napoli, who are 2nd in Serie A so far this season, are the latest side to be linked to the 21-year-old Colombian after Aston Villa spent the summer knocking back bids from English clubs. Villa have been rewarded for resisting the interests of other clubs with 11 goals in 24 games in the Premier League and Champions League so far.

Italian journalist and Napoli expert Ciro Venerato has discussed Napoli’s interest in Duran on Televomero’s Terzo Tempo Calcio Napoli, saying the club’s owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, director Giovanni Manna and manager Antonio Conte are all “crazy” about the player.

He said: “There is a player that De Laurentiis, Manna and Conte are crazy about, he is Jhon Durán from Aston Villa, he costs €40m. Napoli have already had two talks with the player’s agent and will soon have a conference with the English club shortly.”

Fans say that Napoli will be sorely disappointed if they think they can nab Duran for that kind of money. Reader Crichy says: “If he wants to go, fair enough. 80 million I’d be asking at least, they are crazy to say 40 million for a player of his age and potential. It’s an absolute insult.”

Commenter Thorpyuk writes: “€40m? Is that the deposit, with the remaining €110m payable by instalments?” Jambob says: “They’re quoting 40m euros, which equates to 33m pounds. For that they can get one of his legs. They can’t afford him.”

Chosen in 1957 writes: “Napoli! £40 million! Well, it is the pantomime season. I would prefer to believe that the return of Jack ‘and the beanstalk’ Grealish is much more believable.” Mac78 agrees: “£40m was the fee when we rejected West Ham and Chelsea, it’s gone way above that now. UTV.”

Crazycat1 wants the club to start building around the young Colombian: ”Duran has not said that he wants to go anywhere. We should be looking at getting players that can give him service, he could get 25/30 Premier League goals a season.”

Villaman doesn’t want to entertain a sale either: “Well at the rate that Watkins is not scoring, we would be really silly to sell our only consistent goalscorer!”

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato said: “He is a profile that has been evaluated and already promoted by the whole of Calcio Napoli. We need to understand the availability of Aston Villa and the agreement on the evaluation. We also need to understand if Napoli, in order to beat the competition, can take him as early as January and leave him in England until June or whether to make an operation that contemplates the summer market.”

Have your say! How much is Jhon Duran really worth to Villa right now? Comment below, and join in on the conversation.

Aston Villa given green light for Joel Ordonez transfer after what he’s said

Joel Ordonez has opened the door for a potential January transfer to Aston Villa after commenting on the links regarding his future at Club Brugge.

The Villans are targeting a move for the Ecuadorian ahead of the winter transfer window after his impressive performances in the Belgian Pro League and Champions League this term [Caught Offside].

Unai Emery is eager to bolster his defensive ranks at Villa Park after recently ending an eight-match winless streak across all competitions and could now be free to pursue one of his top targets.

Ordonez has spoken out about the ongoing speculation regarding his future in a pre-match press conference for Club Brugge, as relayed by TBR Football [10 December].

He said: “The Premier League, I would like that.”

Aston Villa could sign Joel Ordonez in January

The 20-year-old will be a highly-coveted commodity heading into the January transfer window, with Newcastle United and Liverpool also interested in acquiring the defender’s services.

Monchi may already be facing a losing battle to bring the Ecuadorian international to Villa Park, with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules expected to restrict the transfer business for Aston Villa once again.

Club Brugge value the centre-back at £25million, which is pocket change for Newcastle and Liverpool, but the Villans will struggle to sanction the funds without a sale.

However, Emery lacks the required depth in the centre-back position, with Pau Torres, Tyrone Mings and Diego Carlos the only senior options at Villa Park.

The latter looked destined to depart for Fulham in the summer but remained with Aston Villa and has enjoyed a first team resurgence as of late – putting the Brazilian on the chopping block again would defeat the purpose of acquiring another centre-back.

Therefore, the door may be open to pursue Ordonez, but the Villans could lack the means to complete the deal.

This move will all come down to how badly Emery wants the defender in Birmingham, and who he is willing to sacrifice to make it happen.

Aston Villa kept to their label as being an entertaining watch this mid-week in the Champions League, having beaten RB Leipzig 3-2 in a thrilling contest in Germany.

Away from starring on Europe’s biggest stage, Unai Emery’s men also boast 23 goals scored from 15 Premier League clashes, as the Villa Park masses often lap up the exhilarating action on display.

Morgan Rogers has been one notable player that has got supporters out of their seats this season, alongside the continued exploits of Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins up top, who regularly share the goal load for the Villans.

Duran & Watkins’ form this season

Duran has remarkably got ten goals next to his name this campaign from very limited starts, which included him scoring a sumptuous strike last match versus RB Leipzig when unleashed onto the Red Bull Arena turf.

Just eight minutes after being introduced, the potent Colombian would hammer home this fierce effort past a hapless Peter Gulacsi, as the away fans inside Leipzig’s stadium went barmy off the back of such a sweet strike rippling the back of the net.

Watkins wouldn’t add to those cheers unfortunately as a strike passed him by on Tuesday night, but the 28-year-old has been clinical at points for his team back in the bread and butter of the Premier League, with seven goals fired home from 15 appearances.

That has bumped Watkins’ overall total for the West Midlands titans to a stunning 77 goals, with his consistency in front of goal leading to Duran usually being left out of the main XI for the former Brentford star to lead the line.

    Ollie-Watkins-1

Not every purchase into the building in attack has gone to be a rip-roaring success, however, with this former flop really struggling throughout his cursed stay at Villa Park.

    Wesley’s career since leaving Villa

The dud in question here is Wesley, who cost Villa an extortionate £22m back in 2019 from Club Brugge, with many left hoping that the new Brazilian recruit could be their next Christian Benteke.

After all, Benteke would go on to net 49 goals for the Villans from 101 games after also once plying his trade in Belgium, but Wesley would get nowhere near that bumper amount himself during a rotten stint in England.

He would initially bed in well with four goals registered in the Premier League from eight games, which included this composed finish beating Jordan Pickford to open his Villa account, but a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury picked up during his debut season would end up killing his career at Villa Park.

Past those wretched injury demons, Wesley would only be fit to play another four times in the West Midlands to score another two strikes, which would lead to his sad permanent departure in 2023 to Stoke City, leaving the club on a free transfer.

Although he would never get off the mark for the Potters, Wesley has managed to breathe life back into his playing days in Turkey for Fatih Karagümrük, where he has now transformed himself into a feared goal machine.

Amazingly – although it is in the Turkish second division – the South American has managed to better both Duran and Watkins in terms of goals scored in league action, with an impressive 12 league goals from just 15 contests.

He must play over his brief Villa career in his head and wonder what could have been if it wasn’t for extended periods in the treatment room, with the 28-year-old at least content that he’s back to his best years on from this ordeal.

Whilst Wesley continues to fire in goal after goal, Duran and Watkins will hope they can do similar under Emery, as a hectic list of fixtures awaits the Villans deep into December.

  • Alan Shearer ‘loved’ what Aston Villa star did vs Leipzig but slams ‘awful’ £20m teammate

Alan Shearer ‘loved’ what Aston Villa star did vs Leipzig but slams ‘awful’ £20m teammate

Aston Villa’s Champions League encounters have tended to be pretty dramatic and, as Jhon Duran fired home another stunner, Ross Barkley netted the winner and Emi Martinez committed a rare howler, that 3-2 win at RB Leipzig had it all.

It was a game Aston Villa were inches away from wrapping up – VAR denying them a 3-1 lead moments before Christoph Baumgartner’s stunning equaliser at the other end – yet very easily could have lost too.

A match full of calamity, quality and no shortage of good fortune. Of brilliant goals, bizarre goals, and in which the final point was made by a man who, in Ross Barkley, spent last season at Luton Town attempting to resuscitate a career which appeared to be groaning out a death rattle.

Alan Shearer, in his co-commentary role, often sounded like a man who did not know whether to praise Aston Villa’s performance or lambast it, such was the manner in which Unai Emery’s team flipped from fantastic to feeble.

John McGinn gave Villa the lead in the Red Bull Arena after just two minutes. A Leipzig side haunted by the recent 5-1 home defeat by VFL Wolfsburg appeared to be hurtling towards another steamrollering.

That was until the usually faultless Emi Martinez – two weeks after Aston Villa’s goalkeeper denied Juventus in ‘incredible’ fashion – switched off to gift Lois Openda an equaliser entirely against the run of play.

Alan Shearer slams Emi Martinez but hails Jhon Duran in Aston Villa win

“What on earth was he doing?” a bemused Shearer told Amazon Prime, Martinez seemingly waiting for the ball to bounce harmlessly into his arms as Openda nicked in.

“He just doesn’t see Openda. It is just a long, hopeful punt upfield. He comes out the box thinking the ball is going to get to him and it never does. An awful error. He just doesn’t see him coming!

“[It was] a stupid error like that inviting them back into the game. [Leipzig] hadn’t offered anything in forward positions at all. They’ve grown into the game because of that mistake so he will be really angry and really upset, Unai Emery.”

With a place in the Champions League knockout stage within their grasp, the Spaniard would have been far happier with a second-half display in which Aston Villa played with an intensity and a bravery reminiscent of their 2023/24 pomp.

Half-time substitute Jhon Duran stunned Bayern Munich with a sensational lob on matchday one. On matchday six, he repeated the trick. Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi could only stand idly – a la Neuer all those months ago – by as Duran added another contender to his personal Goal of the Season competition.

And Newcastle legend Shearer, a man who liked a long-range pop himself during his storied playing career, could not express greater appreciation for Duran’s hit-and-hope methods.

“We said the damage he could cause [off the bench]. He sort of bends it and the dip that he gets on it…” Shearer beamed. “Great attitude. I love that when you are prepared to have a pop at goal from there.

    “Have a shot, why not?”

Shearer suggests Ollie Watkins now under threat as Duran stuns RB Leipzig

While Ollie Watkins did impress during his 45 minutes on the pitch – leading the line as Ollie Watkins tends to do and only denied a goal of his own by a tight VAR call – Shearer wonders if Duran is starting to ask some pretty awkward questions of Emery.

Especially after he marked a rare start – his first of the Premier League campaign – with the winner in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Southampton.

“Its a message to the manager; Don’t leave me out again,” Shearer adds. “When you’re given your opportunity, you’ve got to take it and he is. That is the biggest response. You’ve got every right to knock on the managers door.”

Fellow substitute Ross Barkley would line up a pot shot of his own with 85 minutes remaining. Hardly the dream first touch for Lukas Klostermann; the long-serving Leipzig veteran sending Barkley’s speculative effort spinning home and lifting Aston Villa up to third in the new-look Champions League table.

“They were asked some big questions. They gifted Leipzig back into the game,” Shearer concludes. “But the way their fought back, the way they kept going, the way the substitutes worked, it is a really positive night for Aston Villa.
