Regis Le Bris will hope for further incomings at the Stadium of Light as he bids to lead Sunderland back to the big time this term, having already pulled off the sensational loan signing of Roma midfielder Enzo Le Fee.

The Frenchman’s hotly-anticipated arrival on Wearside is surely going to offer a fresh boost to Sunderland’s promotion hopes, with the Black Cats currently placed fourth but with just a slender three-point gap from league leaders Leeds United.

Sunderland, however, are visibly not intent on stopping there and should amplify their pursuit of additional attacking options to bring Broadhead back to the North East.

This month, it’s all about fine-tuning as opposed to wholesale change.

Le Bris has been able to get a new and unprecedented tune out of this squad, some of whom had sorely struggled in the Championship last season, and Sunderland are one of the division’s very best teams in both boxes.

    Scott Parker and Tom Cannon
mooted as a potential sticking point during Sunderland’s electrifying start to the campaign and while they have weathered the storm and remain firmly in automatic promotion contention at this stage, both ill-luck and the shortage of options throughout the camp have left them in a difficult position.

Romaine Mundle, who has been in inspired form this term, has been out injured since November, and his replacement – 18-year-old sensation Tommy Watson – is poised to face a further month on the sidelines after being struck down against Stoke City last month.

Jack Robinson fouls Tommy Watson - Sheffield United v Sunderland

They are, of course, Sunderland’s two wide-left options, and Le Bris has been forced into bringing attacking midfielder Adil Aouchiche out of relative exile to fill in there with mixed results.

It’s something which Sunderland are very intent on addressing, mind you. They are among a range of second-tier suitors linked with a move for Aston Villa hotshot Louie Barry, who was recently recalled from a stunning loan spell in League One with Stockport County.

    Louie Barry for Aston Villa

According to separate reports, Sunderland joined Sheffield Wednesday in enquiring about the services of Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo, although the former Cardiff and Manchester City prospect is now seemingly set to seal an overseas switch, leaving the Black Cats to consider alternative options.

Admittedly, the market for quality and experienced left-sided wingers is rather thin at the minute, but that isn’t to say options are not available.

One player who may well be is ex-Black Cats loan star Broadhead, who is enduring a tough old time of it at Ipswich this season and is primed to only fall further down McKenna’s pecking order with the Tractor Boys closing in on the signing of Philogene, a long-time target, from Aston Villa for a reported £20 million sum.

    Nathan Broadhead vs Sunderland

Akin to a number of the players who inspired Ipswich to consecutive promotions from the third-tier to the Premier League, Broadhead has found game time immensely difficult to come by in Town’s battle against relegation back to the Championship.

Indeed, he has started just two of his side’s 20 top-flight matches to date – which were the last two fixtures against Fulham and Chelsea, it must be said – with competition from the likes of Omari Hutchinson and even one such Jack Clarke proving stiff.

    2

Although Broadhead has been utilised by McKenna as of late, one would have to be surprised if that was to remain the case following the arrival of Philogene, who, with both his price tag and undoubted quality, will be coming in to establish himself as an instant starter.

His peripherial role pales in comparison to the importance he had in their stunning top-flight promotion last time out, with no player at Portman Road outscoring Broadhead’s return of 13 strikes from 38 appearances.

It was very much a breakthrough campaign at Championship level for Broadhead, who proved his worth at second-tier level after enjoying impressive loan spells in League One with Ipswich and, of course, Sunderland back in the 2022/23 term.

The Welsh international returned 10 strikes in just 22 matches, with his stay frustratingly disrupted through injury, but that prior relationship could be capitalised on in Sunderland’s clear search for a new left-winger.

    Nathan Broadhead

Broadhead brings both creativity and quality in one-v-one scenarios but his considerable goal threat is the outstanding facet of his game.

The Welshman often tends to come inside centrally and run in behind defences, representing a much more direct and decisive profile to the talented, albeit inconsistent Patrick Roberts on the other side.

He would offer, you would like to think, that instant sense of firepower and X-Factor to spearhead Sunderland’s automatic promotion push.

The 26-year-old wide-man has proven himself to be a match-winner on so many occasions in Suffolk and is more than capable of replicating that impact once again.

    Nathan Broadhead

It’s important to note he instantly hit the ground running with Ipswich after joining in the second-half of the 22/23 season, scoring eight goals and getting a further five assists from just 19 third-tier matches to help their promotion to the Championship.

Such an impact for Sunderland heading into such a crucial stage of the campaign could make all the difference in their search of a Premier League return.

Ipswich Town now receive permanent bid to sell “powerful” player in January

    mckenna-ipswich-league-one-celtic-premiership-gossip-desmond-transfer

Ipswich Town have received a permanent January transfer offer to sell a player who Kieran McKenna has previously called “powerful”.

The Tractor Boys have been active in the winter market, making Ben Godfrey the club’s first signing of 2025. The former Norwich City defender joined on loan for the second half of the season from Serie A side Atalanta and made his debut for the club against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup.

Next to arrive at Portman Road will be winger Jaden Philogene. Ipswich agreed on a permanent transfer to sign Philogene from Aston Villa, who have since bolstered their attacking ranks with the arrival of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund.

After Philogene, attention at Ipswich could be on outgoings, with Mckenna admitting defender Harry Clarke could leave on loan before the deadline.

“He’s had some minutes now in the Premier League, some exposure. But of course, for his age, as a young defender, it’s important to be getting minutes regularly for his progression and his role at the club. If everything is in a good place in the squad over the next week or two from an availability point of view, then there’s a chance that Harry will go out on loan to get some regular playing time, to keep pushing with his development.

“That’s the only one, really. Other than that, the squad is pretty tight at the moment. Everyone’s got a really clear role in the team and I wouldn’t expect too many changes to that in the next couple of weeks.”

One player already out on loan is centre-back George Edmundson, who is at Middlesbrough. There have been reports that Michael Carrick’s side were plotting a permanent January move for the Ipswich man, and it looks as if that offer has been made.

According to Football Insider, Ipswich have received and rejected a permanent offer from Middlesbrough for Edmundson. The 27-year-old has been a regular for Boro under Carrick, and reporter Stuart Watson has provided further details on the bid that was made, claiming it was worth £350,000.

Edmundson is out of contract at Portman Road at the end of the season, and it looks as if Ipswich are open to selling for the right price, so it will be interesting if Boro return with an improved offer before the deadline.

McKenna has previously hailed the defender, who he chose to play against Liam Delap last season against Hull City, saying: “I just wanted to put George in tonight. We thought he’s been training really well, has played really well in the cup competitions and I thought his qualities tonight against Liam Delap would be really important.

“There are not many more powerful runners than George so we thought we’d put him up against one of the more powerful runners in the league.”

Ipswich Town are close to finalising a major January transfer as they prepare to welcome Brighton to Portman Road of Thursday night.

Ipswich, who are third from bottom in the Premier League, have been pushing to complete on Jaden Philogene’s £20m arrival from Aston Villa and are now expected to do so in the next 24 hours.

The attacking winger will be too late to feature in Ipswich’s clash against the Seagulls but Philogene could be in place for Kieran Mckenna’s team by the weekend as they welcome Manchester City on Sunday.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted: “Ipswich Town are confident to resolve final details of Jaden Philogene deal in the next 24 hours and then sign all documents. Almost there.”

The 22-year-old underwent his medical at Portman Road, last week and will end his brief six-month return to Villa Park.

The Tractor Boys tried to sign Philogene last summer and agreed a fee of around £18m with Hull but Villa swiftly activated their buy-back option, having previously sold the England under-21 international to Hull in 2023.

He made four starts for Unai Emery’s side this term, including against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and 11 substitute appearances.

Meanwhile, Brighton have transfer issues of their own as boss Fabian Hurzeler has not ruled out January loan moves for Evan Ferguson and Julio Enciso.

The two forwards have struggled for minutes this season having worked their way back from long-term injuries last term.

“We will negotiate what is important for him, what is important for his development, where he can improve the best and then we will make the decision together,” Hurzeler said on Ferguson’s future ahead of Brighton’s Premier League trip to Ipswich on Thursday.

“This decision should be what is best for the player and for the club. We sent (Facundo) Buonanotte, for example, to Leicester.

“In the end, they want to play for Brighton and we want them to play for Brighton. So, that’s why I am not thinking about making the other teams better, it’s more about what is best for the player.”

Paraguay international Enciso scored his first goal since May 2023 in Brighton’s 4-0 FA Cup win at Norwich on Saturday.

Hurzeler said: “Julio has value, special potential and a profile that helps us in different situations.

“He’s giving everything for the club because he says he really likes to play for Brighton and he has shown it on the pitch this season.

“We are really happy to have him here, but we always have to negotiate what is the best individual development for the player.”

Brighton have slipped to 10th in the Premier League after eight games without a win in the competition, drawing six of those.

Notre Dame National Championships: Wins, history, winningest coaches ahead of CFP title game vs. Ohio State

Notre Dame National Championships: Wins, history, winningest coaches ahead of CFP title game vs. Ohio State

So it comes down to this: Notre Dame will face Ohio State in the CFP National Championship Game, the first under the 12-team Playoff format, Monday in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

As far as chasing titles goes, this is not Notre Dame’s first rodeo. But should they prevail, it will be their first title in almost four decades, with the last coming in a college football landscape that looked worlds different from today’s.

Keep reading for all you need to know about Notre Dame’s championship-rich history, the company that Marcus Freeman and co. are trying to join and what new pages the Fighting Irish can write on Monday.

    Discover

These championships were not won via officially designated national championship games, but rather by polls conducted at the end of the season. Eight of the program’s titles came via the AP Poll, the highest-regarded championship decider from its 1936 inception through 1997. Notre Dame’s first three championships are based on methodologies such as the Dickinson System and, retroactively, the College Football Researchers Association.

The kicker: Notre Dame is tied for the second-most national championships since the beginning of the AP Poll (1936), behind only Alabama … and tied with, yes, Ohio State.

    Until Monday.

Again, there was no firm “national championship game” yet in 1988, but that season’s Fiesta Bowl featured two undefeated teams – No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 3 West Virginia – so it effectively served that purpose. The Fighting Irish beat the Mountaineers 34-21 and were subsequently crowned.

It’s Notre Dame’s most recent national championship. Monday will be the second time Notre Dame has played in an official national championship game, after losing to Alabama in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game. (The Irish’s wins from that season and the following, though, were later vacated.)

Frank Leahy has the most national titles as a coach in Notre Dame history, winning four times in the 1940s. Knute Rockne trails him with the first three claimed titles in program history. Ara Parseghian won twice, while Lou Holtz and Dan Devine earned one apiece.

The last Fighting Irish coach to win it all was Lou Holtz, making him the fifth to lead Notre Dame to the promised land.

Current head coach Marcus Freeman is chasing some peculiar history: With a win over Ohio State on Monday, Freeman will become the fourth head coach to lead Notre Dame to a national championship in his third season at the helm. It would be the third title in the program’s last four to come in a coach’s Year 3: Parseghian did it in 1966, Devine in 1977 and Holtz in 1988.

You don’t have to remind Freeman of that history.0 seconds of 1 minute, 25 seconds

Brentford to sanction transfer exit with another loan considered

Brentford will let one goalkeeper leave the club on loan this month.

Mark Flekken will remain No1 for the second half of the season, but Standard Sport understands one of the Dutchman’s three understudies will be allowed to leave on a six-month loan in January in search of more game time.

The Bees will await loan offers for Hákon Valdimarsson, Matthew Cox and Ellery Balcombe before deciding which of the three will depart for the remainder of the season, but only one will.0:00

The preference is for Valdimarrson or Cox to be the one to get first-team minutes elsewhere. Brentford chiefs pulled the plug on Balcombe’s season-long loan at St Mirren earlier this month in order to explore options for Cox and Valdimarrson. St Mirren had also been working on signing a new goalkeeper, which may have put Balcombe’s regular game time at risk if he had stayed.

Midfielder Yunus Emre Konak could also leave on loan.

A spell away from Brentford for midfielder Konak is also being actively worked on, with the Turk in need of more game time after making five cameos off the bench in the first half of the Premier League season.

David Pollack questions Miami’s decision to target Carson Beck

There have been so many questions that have come out since former Georgia football quarterback Carson Beck made the decision to transfer to Miami (FL). And many of those questions have gone unanswered. Unfortunately for the college football world, those questions will likely remain unanswered as we likely will never know what led Beck to make this decision.

While we may never know why Beck chose to do what he did, it won’t stop people from speculating and debating if it was the right choice or not. Many people have discussed if Beck transferring to Miami was a better decision then staying in the NFL Draft or returning to Georgia, but not many have discussed if Miami made the right choice to go after Beck.

That is until former Georgia football legend David Pollack voiced his opinion on Miami’s decision to target Beck in the first place.

“I don’t want to say this. I’m not saying this rude, but like it’s damaged goods right now,” Pollack said via ugawire.usetoday.com. “Like you don’t know what you’re getting, so if you’re going to make a heavy investment (in Beck) I think it’s kind of hard to do if you’re a college team.”

When Beck is at his best, there is no denying that he is one of the top quarterbacks in the entire country. So if the Hurricanes get the best version of Beck later this fall, then they 100 percent made the right call to go after him in the first place.

But will Miami actually see the best version of Beck? Georgia fans would likely be quick to tell Miami that they won’t.

For starters, Beck did not have his best stuff this past season when he was healthy. His 2023 season was better than his 2024 season, and Beck’s leadership qualities also seemed to decline this past year as well. On top of these issues, we also need to factor in Beck’s injury that Pollack discussed.

Who knows how good Beck will be after recovering from this injury. There is a chance this injury doesn’t impact his playing ability at all, but there is also a chance that he is nowhere near the caliber of player that he was before the injury. So Pollack thinks that Miami targeting Beck in general is a questionable decision, especially when you factor in the $3 million in NIL Miami is reportedly paying Beck.

Time will tell if this decision works out for Beck and Miami or not, but a lot of people have their doubts, and that includes Pollack who knows more about college football than most people.

Jaden Philogene is reportedly set to join from Premier League rivals Aston Villa in a deal worth at least £21m, which will make him the second addition after the arrival of Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta.

Bringing in new players to bolster the squad, however, could mean that Kieran McKenna will need to be ruthless with who he decides to keep as part of the group before the deadline.

One player who could be ruthlessly ditched ahead of February’s deadline is winger Wes Burns, who has struggled with the step up to the Premier League.

    Wes Burns’ form this season
The 30-year-old forward has started ten of his 16 appearances in the top-flight for the Tractor Boys this term, and is yet to get his name on the scoresheet.

Burns, who has been utilised as a right winger and as a right wing-back at times, has zero goals and one assist in those 16 matches, which shows that he has failed to offer consistent quality at the top end of the pitch.

The Wales international has also only completed 70% of his attempted passes and has lost 60% of his duels in the division, as he has been loose in possession and struggled to deal with the physicality of the Premier League.

Ipswich can finally move on from Burns by swooping to sign one of their reported targets, Ben Doak, to replace him, freeing up the space in the squad for McKenna to ruthlessly cash in on the experienced winger.

Why Ipswich should sign Ben Doak
The Tractor Boys are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the Scotland international from Liverpool, who are said to value him at around £30m – amid interest from Crystal Palace as well.

Doak, who is currently on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship, has been in impressive form for club and country this season and could come in as an upgrade on Burns, as well as having more long-term potential and value.

At the age of 19, the winger is 11 years younger and would, therefore, have more time on his side to be developed by McKenna and the coaching staff, which could make him an even more valuable asset in the future.

Doak has created two ‘big chances’ in four starts in the Nations League for Scotland this season and caught the eye with his form in the Championship for Boro.

    Stats via Sofascore
As you can see in the table above, the teenage starlet, who has been described as “explosive” by Aston Villa’s John McGinn, has been directly involved in eight goals in 18 league matches this term.

Whereas, Burns only managed six goals and four assists in 35 appearances in the Championship during Ipswich’s promotion-winning campaign last season.

This suggests that Doak, despite his age and inexperience, could immediately come in to offer more than the Welshman at the top end of the pitch, particularly as a creative threat for the Tractor Boys.

  • NFL Detroit Lions Detroit Lions bold predictions for Divisional Round vs. Commanders

NFL Detroit Lions Detroit Lions bold predictions for Divisional Round vs. Commanders

The Detroit Lions have reached a pivotal moment in their journey, one they’ve been steadily building toward for years. Long overshadowed, underestimated, and dismissed as perennial underachievers, the Lions now charge into the 2025 NFL Divisional Round with a confidence born of their dominant 15-2 regular season. Their clash with the Washington Commanders promises to test their mettle, but if this season has shown anything, it’s that Detroit is more than prepared for the challenge. Here’s why the Lions are poised to make a statement this weekend, complete with bold predictions.

Detroit’s 2024 season was nothing short of spectacular. Building on the momentum from a strong 2023, the Lions entered the year with sky-high expectations. Fittingly enough, they managed to exceed them. Dominating the NFC North, they combined an explosive offense with a disciplined and opportunistic defense. Jared Goff directed an offense that ranked among the league’s most productive in both yards and points. On the defensive side, Aidan Hutchinson (before his injury), Kerby Joseph, and Jack Campbell spearheaded a unit that stepped up in critical moments.

After earning a well-deserved BYE week during the Wild Card Round, the Lions now begin their postseason journey with sights firmly set on the Super Bowl. Awaiting them in the Divisional Round are the Washington Commanders. The Commanders edged out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a hard-fought battle, thanks in part to the standout performance of Jayden Daniels. He is the likely Offensive Rookie of the Year. Their win has turned Washington into a compelling underdog, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown in Detroit.

Ahead of their game against the Washington Commanders, it’s time to release our Detroit Lions 2025 Divisional Round predictions.

Both teams have found remarkable success through the air. Leading the way for Detroit is Goff, who has had a career-best season. He threw for 4,629 yards—second in the league—37 touchdowns, and just 12 interceptions.

Goff’sperformance has been nothing short of phenomenal this year. He has silenced critics who doubted his ability to take a team deep into the postseason. Against a Commanders defense that has struggled against elite quarterbacks, Goff should deliver another stellar performance. Expect him to eclipse 300 yards passing, effectively distributing the ball to his talented arsenal of playmakers. Goff’s sharp decision-making and pinpoint accuracy will challenge Washington’s defense. This should create opportunities for explosive plays downfield.

Among Goff’s primary targets is Amon-Ra St. Brown. He continues to solidify his status as one of the league’s premier wide receivers. St. Brown’s consistent excellence has been a key factor in Detroit’s offensive explosiveness, tallying 12 touchdowns this season. His ability to find openings in coverage and turn short gains into significant plays makes him indispensable to the Lions’ success. This weekend, look for St. Brown to add to his impressive resume with another standout performance. His connection with Goff should result in more than 100 yards receiving and at least one touchdown.

The Lions’ offense thrives when their running game is clicking. They will have a prime opportunity to capitalize against a Washington front that has struggled to stop the run all season. RB standout Jahmyr Gibbs is poised for a strong performance. Fans should be treated to his unique blend of speed, vision, and agility.

Gibbs is set to rack up at least 80 yards on the ground, with the potential to find the end zone twice. Whether it’s through a long, highlight-reel run or a decisive red-zone carry, his impact will force Washington’s defense to respect Detroit’s ground attack. This will, in turn, create even more opportunities for the Lions to exploit gaps in the passing game. Gibbs’ dual-threat ability as a runner and receiver ensures he’ll be a game-changer in this critical matchup.

Another emerging star in Detroit’s offense is tight end Sam LaPorta. He has quickly become a go-to option for Goff. LaPorta has utilized his size, athleticism, and sure hands to create mismatches. Against a Commanders defense that has struggled to contain tight ends, he is well-positioned to make a significant impact.

LaPorta’s presence in the red zone will be especially valuable, as he’s likely to haul in a touchdown pass. That should provide the Lions with another reliable target in high-pressure situations. His ability to excel on intermediate routes and in contested situations adds yet another layer to Detroit’s potent offensive attack.

This should not be a surprise. The Detroit Lions will emerge victorious, earning a trip to the NFC Championship Game. Yes, the Commanders pulled off a dramatic 23-20 upset over the Buccaneers. That said, they’ll face a much tougher challenge in Detroit. The Lions are well-rested following their bye week and have the advantage of playing at Ford Field.

Although Jayden Daniels has been impressive, overcoming Detroit’s balanced attack will be a tall order. With Goff orchestrating the offense and key contributors like St. Brown, Gibbs, and LaPorta ready to shine, the Lions should outpace the Commanders in what could become a high-scoring affair. Detroit’s combination of talent, preparation, and home-field advantage will ultimately prove decisive. This will bring the team one step closer to their long-awaited Super Bowl appearance.

    Changing the Narrative

The Detroit Lions have spent the 2024 season rewriting their narrative, and this Divisional Round matchup against the Washington Commanders represents yet another opportunity to solidify their status as one of the NFL’s elite. With a balanced attack, star players performing at their peak, and the unwavering support of a raucous Ford Field crowd, Detroit is poised to take another step toward their ultimate goal. As they prepare for this critical test, the Lions have all the pieces in place to continue their historic run and bring the city of Detroit closer to a long-awaited Super Bowl dream.

An exciting weekend is approaching, and the Washington Commanders are in the playoffs for the first time in four years.

The Commanders are taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Many fans like Ted Abela are getting ready to travel to Tampa for the game, hoping rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels can deliver a win.

“We earned this. 12 wins for this team and so to be able to go down there and the fact that the spread is only three points goes to show you that it is anybody’s game and to have the prime-time Sunday night match up and I think Commander’s fans should get used to being under those lights,” Abela said.

On Thursday afternoon he was busy packing all his team burgundy and gold clothes including team socks, and his favorite Commander’s shirt which he will be wearing with his favorite team varsity jacket.

As quarterback Jayden Daniels and his teammates prepare for the big game, Tailgate Ted said he is so proud of what the team has accomplished under a fantastic rookie quarterback.

“I did not know what this young man would be but after seeing a whole 17-game season out of him and the heart he has and the tenacity and drive to put in the work that’s needed,” he said.
