Ipswich Town vs. Manchester City: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Manchester City will be looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon.

After putting together a three-game winning run in all competitions, the Citizens were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with Brentford on Tuesday night after letting a two-goal lead slip in the final eight minutes.

While Pep Guardiola‘s side currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, Ipswich are down in 18th place, inside the relegation zone only by goal difference, after losing 2-0 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday night.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Man City vs. Ipswich: Head-to-head record and past meetings

    Head-to-head record

Man City and Ipswich have butted heads a total of 67 times across all competitions over the years, and it is the Tractor Boys who marginally lead the overall head-to-head record as they have won 28 games compared to the Citizens’ 24, while 15 draws have been played out between the two teams.

Sixty-four years have passed since these two clubs faced off for the very first time back in August 1961, when a six-goal thriller was played out at Portman Road as Man City secured a 4-2 top-flight win courtesy of two late goals from Peter Dobing.

Man City won six of their first 11 meetings with Ipswich, including a 4-0 victory at Maine Road in November 1964 when both teams were competing in the second tier, before they faced each other in 15 consecutive top-flight seasons between 1968 and 1983.

While Man City won just eight times, including once in the FA Cup and once in the EFL Cup triumph, Ipswich came out on top in 15 games against the Citizens in the top division, and there were also five draws.

In the Premier League era (since 1992-93), Man City and Ipswich have only locked horns on nine occasions; the first six were in each of the first three seasons of the newly-branded top tier, with the Citizens winning five and drawing one.

Ipswich were relegated in 1994-95, but they were joined in the second tier by Man City just a year later and the Tractor Boys enjoyed a brief spell of dominance over their North West counterparts, winning four successive league games by an aggregate score of 6-2 between April 1997 and October 1999.

In the 2000-01 Premier League campaign, Man City suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Ipswich, six months before the Tractor Boys completed the double by winning 2-1 at Portman Road. The Citizens got their revenge in January 2002, though, as a brace from Shaun Goater and goals from both Eyal Berkovic and Darren Huckerby helped secure a 4-1 away victory in the FA Cup fourth round.

Twenty-two years later, Man City welcomed Ipswich to the Etihad Stadium and celebrated another 4-1 win, this time in the Premier League thanks to a hat-trick from Erling Haaland and a strike from Kevin De Bruyne.

Emery Asks Aston Villa to Sign £290k-a-Week Forward in January

Unai Emery has reportedly asked Aston Villa to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Marco Asensio in January, according to Fichajes.

The Spanish tactician is said to have drawn up a three-player wishlist for the winter transfer window, including Asensio, as well as defenders Oscar Mingueza from Celta Vigo and Loic Bade from Sevilla.

Villa are reportedly considering signing Asensio on loan until the end of the season, while moves for Mingueza and Bade would be permanent.

Having already secured Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen on a long-term deal, the West Midlands club appear to be preparing for a busy end to the transfer window, with defensive reinforcements expected next.

Paris Saint-Germain winger Marco Asensio celebrating

Asensio has struggled for regular minutes under Luis Enrique at PSG this season and faces an uncertain future at Parc des Princes, with just 18 months remaining on his £290,000-per-week contract.

The 28-year-old has made only 15 appearances for the Ligue 1 champions in all competitions this term, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

The Spanish international last started a game for PSG on 22 November in their 3-0 win over Toulouse and has been left on the bench for their last three league fixtures.

As a result, multiple European clubs have been linked with a surprise January move for Asensio, including Newcastle, Juventus and Real Sociedad.

It remains to be seen whether Villa will act on their reported interest in Asensio, having secured Malen on a long-term deal this week.

The Dutch forward became Villa’s first signing of the January transfer window and replaced Jaden Philogene, who was sold to Ipswich Town after just six months at the club.

Villa have climbed to seventh in the Premier League following their 1-0 win at Everton on Wednesday and will next travel to Arsenal at the weekend.

Florida Football is kicking the tires at a former top 100 QB prospect in the portal

Florida Football is still in need of a veteran backup quarterback now that Deshawn Purdie has decided he doesn’t want to be DJ Lagway’s backup.

Based on a report from Steve Wiltfong, Florida is kicking the tires at a QB who has started in The Swamp in the past.

Wiltfong is reporting that Louisville QB Harrison Bailey is going to “throw for the Florida staff,” and if that goes well, then Billy Napier and crew will bring Bailey in for a visit.

Bailey was a top 100 prospect in the class of 2020 who signed with Tennessee under Jeremy Pruitt. Bailey started against the Gators in 2020 when Florida beat Tennessee 31-19. Bailey was 14 for 21 for 111 yards and one touchdown in that game before he got benched.

Since then, Bailey has had minimal opportunities to play. He hit the portal and wound up at UNLV, where he came off the bench in the season finale to lead the Rebels to a victory over Nevada.

In 2023, he was back in the portal and spent the past two years at Louisville. Beyond mop-up duty, Bailey didn’t take any meaningful snaps with the Cardinals until the Sun Bowl, when he threw three touchdowns to lead Lousiville to a 35-34 victory over Washington.

Bailey is part of the last wave of players who can claim a 6th year due to COVID-19, and Napier and crew are hoping to find someone who can come in and compete for the backup QB spot.

Last year, Florida brought in Clay Millen and Aidan Warner. When Lagway went down, Warner was tapped to be the guy but struggled. On paper both Millen and Warner are back for 2025 along with four-star true freshman Tramell Jones.

Ipswich Town receive 4 permanent bids to sell versatile forward in January

    ipswich-portman-road

wchTown have received four permanent offers to sell a versatile forward in the January transfer window, according to a new report.

Kieran McKenna and the Tractor Boys completed their second winter window signing on Wednesday evening, with Jaden Philogene following Ben Godfrey through the Portman Road door.

The winger has signed on a permanent transfer from Premier League rivals Aston Villa and put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

Talking after completing his move, Philogene said: “I’m excited to be here and I know there are great players in the squad. I just want to play as much as possible. As a player I like to dribble and link up play and provide goals and assists. I’m looking forward to it.”

McKenna has hinted that attention will now turn to outgoings, with a loan exit for full-back Harry Clarke a possibility. “There’s a possibility that Harry Clarke will go out on loan. Me and Harry have had those conversations. He’s an important player for us, a very good player. He played through some injury at the back end of last season and had a big surgery in the summer, so he’s missed a few months of football.

“He’s had some minutes now in the Premier League, some exposure. But of course, for his age, as a young defender, it’s important to be getting minutes regularly for his progression and his role at the club. If everything is in a good place in the squad over the next week or two from an availability point of view, then there’s a chance that Harry will go out on loan to get some regular playing time, to keep pushing with his development.”

Permanent exits for some players who are still on the books at Portman Road may also be a possibility, though. Middlesbrough have had a bid turned down for loanee George Edmundson, with Ipswich open to selling at the right piece with the defender out of contract in the summer.

Ipswich Town receive 4 bids for versatile forward

Now, another Ipswich Town player is wanted in a full-time January transfer window exit after impressing out on loan. According to The 17, four clubs have made permanent bids to sign Ipswich Town attacker Osman Foyo.

    osman-foyo-ipswich

The 20-year-old has been catching the eye out on loan with Chelmsford City in the National League South which has alerted League One side Crawley Town and League Two trio AFC Wimbledon, Port Vale and Colchester United.

The report states that all our clubs have made permanent bids for Foyo and he is set to join one of the sides ‘in the next 10 days with offers lodged and talks over personal terms taking place’.

Foyo scored 12 goals and provided two assists in 21 National League South games for Chelmsford City, so it’s easy to see why he has caught the eye of a number of EFL outfits.

A versatile forward who can play on the right-wing, left-wing or as an attacking midfielder, Foyo was previously on the books of rivals Norwich City before moving to Ipswich in 2023, as per Transfermarkt.

Now, it looks as if he will depart Portman Road for good without making a single first-team appearance under McKenna.

5 problems Commanders must solve before Divisional Round clash at the Lions

The Commanders are looking to take another big scalp.

    Austin Ekeler

The Washington Commanders sail into long-forgotten territory on Saturday Night Football.

They have not been in the second round of the playoffs since Joe Gibbs was coaching. Back in the 1980s, during his first run, Washington was routinely in the mix for division and conference championships. Those days seem like ancient history.

But Dan Quinn, Jayden Daniels, and a host of gritty players are bringing those days back. This team still has work to do on its roster, but the Super Bowl is just two wins away. The next step may be the toughest of them all.

The Detroit Lions are the team Washington aspires to be. They too were recently mired in decades of futility. Then they hired a smart general manager and an inspiring head coach. They finished 2024 as the best team in the entire NFL.

The Commanders just defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Lions have not been held below 23 points since Week 4. They led the league in scoring. They were in the top 10 in scoring defense. Their season-long scoring margin of 222 dwarfed the second-best team in the league.

When all-world defensive end Aiden Hutchinson was lost for the season early, analysts predicted doom. They lost stud interior defensive linemen Alim McNeill and Kyle Peko. Derrick Barnes and Carlton Davis. Then that depleted defense went out in Week 17 with the division on the line and demolished the 14-win Minnesota Vikings.

How can the underdog Commanders go into Ford Field and pull off a huge upset against a well-rested juggernaut? It won’t be easy, but here are some problems they must solve to achieve their lofty objective.

Problems the Commanders must solve entering Divisional Round at the Lions

    Commanders’ critical fourth-down strategy

Detroit has far too many weapons on offense to keep them from scoring. Since falling to Tampa Bay in Week 2, the only team that beat the Lions was the Buffalo Bills.

They won in a shoot-out, 48-42. Washington may not have to go that high to win, but they will need points. That most likely means they will have to continue their mastery of fourth-down conversions.

That will not merely create more scoring opportunities for Jayden Daniels and crew. It will also keep that explosive Lions offense on the sidelines. Time of possession was perhaps the biggest reason Washington was able to beat Tampa Bay.

This doesn’t apply on offense alone. Dan Campbell goes for it on fourth down religiously. With a dominant offensive line, a savvy veteran quarterback, and a plethora of talented receivers and runners, it has proven very difficult to stop the Lions when they need three or four yards.

Washington’s defense has to make plays on fourth down.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has now dropped a big update on the future of Chelsea target Marc Guehi. is thought to be at the top

but a deal remains tricky, with Crystal Palace keen to keep hold of one of their key figures.

Glasner has now shared what the player himself wants to do amid interest from his former club.

If Glasner’s words are to be believed, it does not look like Guehi is going to push for a return to Stamford Bridge this month.

According to the Austrian, Guehi wants to remain at Selhurst Park in a boost to the Eagles.

“I know Trevoh [Chalobah] wants to stay, I know Marc wants to stay,” Glasner was quoted as saying by The Independent after Palace’s 1-0 FA Cup win against Stockport on Sunday.

Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo could cost less than Guehi during the current transfer window, and the 25-year-old is another centre-back who has been linked to Chelsea.

With Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile both out injured, it would not be a surprise if Enzo Maresca was pushing Chelsea to re-sign Guehi.

The Chelsea manager is a fan of the England international and could not hide his admiration for him last week.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s 5-0 win against Morecambe, which was relayed by Goal, Maresca said: “The only thing I can say is Marc Guehi is a Palace player. I like Marc, no doubt about it, but he is not currently part of our team.”

Based on Glasner’s words, though, Maresca may have to wait until the summer to get his hands on Guehi.

By then, the 24-year-old will only have 12 months to run on his contract, meaning that it will be much easier for Chelsea to do a deal. Given his value, Guehi is not a player Palace will want to let go for free.

If he does not sign a new contract and they play hardball over the summer, then that could become a real possibility.

Ipswich Town supporters will be hoping that their relegation-threatened team’s positive January continues against Brighton and Hove Albion, with a draw and a win already collected this month in all competitions.

After the Seagulls travel to Suffolk, Kieran McKenna‘s men then have a double whammy of Manchester City and Liverpool to contend with, as more and more fixtures in the Premier League come thick and fast for the Tractor Boys.

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna applauds fans after the match

The Northern Irish manager will know he can rely on the likes of Liam Delap moving forward among other top first-team personnel to continue to put in admirable performances, with the 21-year-old wanting to let his football do the talking amidst rampant speculation linking him with a move away from the top-flight minnows.

How Ipswich can ensure Premier League survival

In all fairness, McKenna’s men have been far from poor this term with some notable players becoming household names across the campaign to date.

The biggest part of their survival bid will be the aforementioned Delap. He’s seriously caught the eye on the way to notching up plenty of goals with his eighth Premier League strike of a glittering season coming last time out versus Fulham when he calmly slotted a penalty away in the 2-2 draw.

Before that, he also managed to score and assist during a dramatic 2-0 win over Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea, with the Blues now interested in snapping up the potent attacker at some point this January.

There have been other star performers in the side which include Leif Davis at the back who has transitioned to top-flight football equally as well.

The ex-Leeds United man has three goal contributions next to his name in the league as a gung-ho option in defence but has also managed to show solidity at the back when needed, notably winning as many as six duels won in total versus Nottingham Forest back in November.

Alongside these two faces, there have been other standout individuals such as Dara O’Shea who won five duels himself versus Chelsea, but there have also been some notable underperformers.

One of which has been the captain…

Sam Morsy’s difficult adjustment to Premier League life was clear for all to see in Ipswich’s last league clash at Fulham, with the midfielder giving away one of the two spot-kicks at Craven Cottage due to some reckless tackling on a day where most of his play felt erratic.

    Sam-Morsy-Ipswich

He ended up winning just two of his seven duels against Marco Silva’s hosts – with his average per game for the season a far heftier 4.3. His showing against Chelsea was also below-par considering all of the star performers surrounding him, having registered just 71% of his passes.

Therefore, McKenna could well have a selection conundrum to address involving the long-standing Ipswich servant, with Kalvin Phillips also standing out in the FA Cup in his place with a goal tallied up against Bristol Rovers.

With Nemanja Matic also touted with a move to Suffolk, there might not be space for the 33-year-old veteran anymore in his starting XI on a consistent basis, despite the fact Morsy has been a regular during the club’s

promotion heroics. On top of Morsy sliding down the pecking order due to his out-of-sorts form, he could soon be axed for good by Ipswich owing to his high salary which sees him rake in a £30k-per-week pay packet.

Amazingly, both Delap and Davis earn less despite taking to the top flight like a duck to water, with the exciting pair both taking home a lesser £20k-per-week.

Whilst Morsy did win the club’s Player of the Year for his side just last year as promotion was reached, McKenna will know he needs to keep up with the times, which could result in the ageing midfielder’s game-time lessening even more as survival is sought after.

The outlet believe that Benfica will only agree to sell him if Brentford or any other clubs agree to pay €8m, because that is the amount that the Portuguese giants shelled out to sign him from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2024.

At the same time, Correio da Manha have a different stance. They have stated that Beste has asked to leave his current club, who want €12m to sell him so that they can make a profit from the sale.

They also confirm interest from Brentford, while stating that Hoffenheim want him back and Borussia Monchengladbach are an interested party.

The last few years have been nothing short of a roller coaster for Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys have gone from mid-table mediocrity in League One to the Premier League in the blink of an eye, thanks to a mixture of incredibly underrated players and the genius of Kieran McKenna.

However, while their fairytale ascent up the league has been sensational, the Suffolk side now have half a campaign to try and keep themselves in the top flight, where they belong.

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna applauds fans after the match

Fortunately, results have started to pick up in recent weeks, and there is a chance to add more quality to the team this month, specifically in the midfield.

    Ipswich’s midfield stars

Now, the star of the show for Ipswich this season has undoubtedly been the incredible Liam Delap, who looks like one of the best strikers in the league, with a close second potentially being full-back phenom Leif Davis.

    Liam-Delap-Ipswich

However, while they have not received the same plaudits from the wider footballing world, the Tractor Boys have more than a couple of midfielders who’ve looked at home in the top flight.

For example, summer signing Omari Hutchinson has made 11 appearances in the middle of the park this season, in which he’s scored twice and picked up one assist, while club captain Sam Morsy has played 18 games between central and defensive midfield for McKenna this year, also managing to score and assist a goal in the process.

Alongside the captain this term, it has been either Jens Cajuste, who has racked up 15 appearances thus far, or Kalvin Phillips, who, while looking shakey here and there, has the ability to do a job in defensive midfield and has 13 appearances to his name.

In short, while most of them are unspectacular players, Ipswich’s current crop of midfield options are managing to hold their own in the Premier League, but according to reports from earlier this month, they could soon have some more help as the club are said to be interested in former Chelsea star Nemanja Matic.

    Nemanja-Matic-Manchester-United

However, while the Serbian international is a vastly experienced player and a big name to boot, the Blues might have already been linked to a perfect alternative late last month.

So, to get straight to the point, the potential alternative is former Leeds United star Glen Kamara.

    glen-kamara-leeds-transfer-farke-championship

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey late last month, the 6 foot titan, who joined Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes in the summer for just £8.4m, has caught the attention of several clubs, including Ipswich and Southampton.

It’s unclear how much the French side would want for the former Rangers star, but as he’s played just 43% of available league minutes this term, we wouldn’t be surprised if they’d be willing to accept a fee close to the one they paid in the summer.

However, though he hasn’t played as much football as perhaps he would have liked this season, there are a couple of reasons why he could be an ideal alternative to Matic for the Tractor Boys.

The first is that when we take a look under the hood and compare the midfielders’ underlying numbers from this season, it is the Finnish “monster,” as dubbed by former manager Steven Gerrard, who comes out on top.

On top of having the statistical argument, there is also a significant one around the longevity of the players, as at 29 years old, the Rennes ace could keep playing at the top level for seasons to come, whereas, at 36, the former Serbian international is undoubtedly close to hanging up his boots.

    Glen Kamara

Lastly, the former Manchester United star is currently earning around £97k-per-week, while the 65-capped Fin is on a far more reasonable wage of £29k-per-week, which, when combined with his underlying numbers and age, makes him a far more attractive alternative for a relegation-threatened side who may need to bring in more players this month.

Ultimately, Matic has had a sensational career at the very top of the game, but as things stand, it would make far more sense for Ipswich to try and court Kamara this month.
