Teen sprint sensation Gout Gout prepares to enter a new phase of his record-breaking career: “We’re confident he’s kicked on further

The 17-year-old has been in record-breaking form ahead of the 2025 outdoor season. As he prepares to make his season debut this weekend, Olympics.com looks at how the next steps in his career could push him to run even faster.

There are many similarities between a young Usain Bolt and the prodigious Aussie sprinter Gout Gout.

From their tall, lithe frames to their broad, infectious smiles, it’s easy to draw comparisons between the two from a physical viewpoint.

But the most obvious — and important — similarity is the speed with which they have run, with Gout breaking Bolt’s under-16 200m world record last year at the Australian All Schools Championships with a mark of 20.04 seconds.

At the same time the Jamaican legend has been hinting at a potential return to the athletics track he hasn’t graced since 2017, telling the Ready Set Go podcast, “I’m ready, just for the fun of it. I’m ready, let’s go. It’ll be fun”, Gout is preparing himself for the next phase in his fledgling career.

And if his manager’s words are anything to go by, we may be about to witness something even more special from the record-breaking teen, who turned 17 at the end of December.

“We’re confident he’s kicked on further,” Gout’s manager James Templeton told The Guardian. “Gout is really looking forward to this weekend, as always he’s looking to run fast. Faster than before.”

The event Templeton is referring to this coming weekend is the Queensland Championships, the first of four competitions in Australia that Gout will compete in over the coming month.

While he has already re-written the history books, these upcoming races represent the next step in the development of a young athlete who has captured the attention of the world.

Gout Gout’s rise to the most talked-about young sprinter on the planet

Although he’s still in the early stages of his career, it’s easy to see why Gout is being compared to the very best sprinters in history.

In mid-February, the Australian ventured into the heady realm of the 400m — a world far different to the 100m/200m sprint distances in which he is beginning to make his name.

However, as we are becoming accustomed to, Gout delivered, setting a time of 46.20 seconds that is almost a full second faster than Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles’ personal best.

It followed the Aussie’s record-breaking 20.04-second 200m run in December 2024, where he not only broke Bolt’s age group world record but also became the fastest-ever Oceanian athlete over the half-lap distance — of any age.

While he may be running in the junior categories at this weekend’s Queensland Championships (lining up in both the under-20 100m and 200m), the next weeks will see him take on the cream of Australia’s senior athletes.

Gout is scheduled to race in the senior 200m race at the Maurie Plant meet on 29 March as well as at the national championships in Perth in early April, giving him vital experience in a year that includes an outdoor world championships that he has already stated he is eager to compete in.

After witnessing many races in which Gout has finished metres ahead of his competition, the stiffer rivalries he will face in the open age-group format will represent a new test for the teenager — and possibly one that will push him to run even faster.

Gout Gout and the lessons to be learnt from past champions

Of course, while the comparisons with the world’s best sprinters are easy to make, it’s worth remembering that Gout’s career is still in its infancy.

Not every race will produce a personal best and there are many cautionary tales of young athletes who peaked or plateaued early, never reaching the heights their promise hinted at.

While Bolt was a prodigious teenager, it took much more than natural talent to produce the world record and gold medal-winning performances he enjoyed later in life.

“The hardest thing is to motivate yourself,” the eight-time Olympic gold medallist told the BBC in 2016, the year before his retirement, referencing the dedication it took to maintain the highest levels of performance.

“I talk to myself… especially when I’m in training and I don’t want to do it anymore, I say ‘If you wanna be a champion you gotta go, get up’. I say ‘You’re gonna lose. You don’t wanna lose. So let’s finish this’.”

Lyles, by comparison, was something of a late bloomer. His best under-18 200m time (20.71s) puts him only 33rd on an all-time list led by Erriyon Knighton, Gout and Bolt, while his fastest under-20 time (20.09s) only places him 10th on the all-time list.

For now, athletics fans enjoy Gout for what he is — an exciting young sprinter who has brought new attention to the athletics world through performances that seem well beyond his age.

And perhaps, as the athlete himself does, allow ourselves to dream a little about what’s to come.

As Gout told Athletics Australia, “These are adult times and me, just a kid – I’m running them. It’s going to be a great future for sure.”

Caitlyn Epes/Arizona Cardinals Linebacker Baron Browning pressures 49ers quarterback Joshua Dobbs in the 2024 season finale.

When the Cardinals acquired Baron Browning in a trade from the Broncos during the 2024 season, they were encouraged with the kind of pressure the outside linebacker would bring.

He became a priority to re-sign for the team — and that became a done deal prior to Browning reaching the open market, after he agreed to a new two-year contract on Sunday. It will be worth a reported $15 million, with incentives that could drive it higher.

Browning had two sacks, three quarterback hits and four tackles for loss in the eight games he played in for Arizona after coming over for a sixth-round draft pick. In four NFL seasons he has 11.5 sacks but the feeling is that he fits better in the Cardinals’ defense than in the spot he was being asked to play in Denver.

Browning was one of five outside linebackers the Cardinals had on last year’s roster about to enter free agency, which officially opens Wednesday with the negotiation window starting Monday. The others are Julian Okwara, Dennis Gardeck, Victor Dimukeje and Jesse Luketa.

The Cardinals will be getting back BJ Ojulari, who missed all of 2024 with an ACL injury, to help their EDGE group, but they are also expected to look at the position in either free agency or the draft — or perhaps both.

Social media reactions to Michigan’s embarrassing loss to Spartans

The Michigan Wolverines continue to trend in the wrong direction, suffering another convincing loss to the Michigan State Spartans.

It was another disappointing and head-scratching performance from the Wolverines on Sunday, as Michigan fell to Michigan State by a score of 79-62. For the Wolverines, it was the same old issues that contributed to another embarrassing loss. From careless turnovers to poor performances from the guards, Michigan’s reoccurring problems are concerning for a group that once looked like a formidable tournament team.

In the first half, Michigan shot just 2/10 from beyond the arc, committed 11 turnovers (which MSU turned into 18 points), and was outscored in bench points 21-1. The Wolverines entered halftime with a 22-point deficit.

In the second half, Michigan continued to struggle with turning the ball over early, and the three point shooting was a disaster. The Wolverines finished just 3-24 from beyond the arc, good for 12.5 percent. But Michigan did put together a 14-0 run to cut the lead to 11 points with just under nine minutes to go. Although it was encouraging to see the Wolverines put up a fight in the second half, the disastrous first half was just too much to overcome.

With the loss, Michigan has now lost four of its last six games and looks like a team that is sputtering at the worst time. Needless to say, folks within the Michigan fan base weren’t happy about the performance they saw from the Wolverines on Sunday.

Jets, Justin Fields agree to 2-year deal as New York finds its new QB: Source

Justin Fields #2 of the Pittsburgh Steelers scrambles during the second quarter against the Baltimore Ravens during the AFC Wild Card Playoff at M&T Bank Stadium on January 11, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Athletic has live coverage of NFL free agency. Track all the latest moves here.

The New York Jets have a new quarterback. Justin Fields and the team agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth $40 million, according to a league source. The pact includes a guarantee of $30 million, according to a league source.

Fields was the Jets No. 1 target heading into the offseason, and they’ve had their eye on him ever since Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey took over as head coach and general manager, respectively.

He’s not a perfect quarterback but the talent is significant, his mobility can be used as a weapon and the Jets believe they can turn him into a quality starter in the same way Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold had a resurgence after leaving the teams that drafted them. The Jets announced last month that the team was moving on from Aaron Rodgers after two seasons.

Fields will plug in as the surefire starter in 2025 with Tyrod Taylor as a backup — and the prospect that the Jets would still draft another quarterback can’t be entirely ruled out.

Fields showed some flashes of improvement as a passer with the Steelers in 2024 but not enough to keep him from getting benched for Russell Wilson. Pittsburgh had interest in bringing him back, but the Jets ultimately made him an offer he couldn’t refuse — and now he gets to reunite with Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson, too.

Fields was the No. 24 ranked player on The Athletic’s top 150 free agent rankings and the third-highest quarterback on the list. The No. 11 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Bears, Fields spent the first three seasons of his career in Chicago. With the team set to select Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bears traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers last March.

Fields stepped in for an injured Wilson at the beginning of the season and led the Steelers to a 4-2 record before Fields was replaced by Wilson returned in the starting role. Last season, Fields posted career highs in completion percentage (65.8) and quarterback rating (93.3) while throwing for 1,106 passing yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He added 289 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

In four seasons, Fields has a record of 14-30 as a starting quarterback and has thrown for 7,780 yards, 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions on a completion percentage of 61.1. The 26-year-old also has 2,509 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground.

  • Lewis Hamilton makes promise to Ferrari fans during Milan event ahead of the 2025 F1 season

Lewis Hamilton makes promise to Ferrari fans during Milan event ahead of the 2025 F1 season

Ever since Ferrari announced at the beginning of February 2024 that Lewis Hamilton would be joining the team, excitement and expectation have been growing among the Tifosi.

Ferrari narrowly missed out on ending their long wait for a championship last season but their fans would love nothing more than to see either Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton end that drought this year.

Leclerc is Ferrari’s prodigal son and has been associated with the team for more than half of his life.

They supported him through the junior categories and after a single year with Sauber, they promoted him to drive alongside – and eventually beat – four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

The arrival of Hamilton at Ferrari sees Leclerc facing his toughest task so far, even if Hamilton’s form did begin to suffer last season, particularly in qualifying.

Damon Hill questioned if Hamilton had lost his one-lap pace but the 40-year-old is more likely to put that down to the previous few Mercedes cars not suiting his driving style.

Hamilton will only discover over the coming months whether it was him or the car that was the issue, but he’s done everything in his power to integrate at Ferrari as quickly as possible over the past six weeks.

Team principal Frederic Vasseur has high hopes for Hamilton but not as high as Ferrari’s fans who have been turning out in their thousands to catch a glimpse of the seven-time world champion.

A report from the German outlet Auto Motor und Sport has shared more details about a recent event held in Milan before the team jetted off to the Australian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton promised Ferrari fans he’ll learn to speak Italian during Milan event

Tens of thousands of fans turned out to see Hamilton and Leclerc in Milan as both drivers took to the streets to drive some of Ferrari’s old F1 cars.

Hamilton was spotted doing doughnuts at one point and showed his expert car control by avoiding the barriers on the narrow streets.

One of the most stirring moments of the event was when the Italian national anthem played out and everyone in the crowd joined in.

Leclerc was also seen singing along and joked with Hamilton that he’ll teach him the anthem in the future.

Talking to the crowd, Hamilton said: “Wearing red and experiencing an event like this is something very special, as is standing with you in front of historic cars, including those that Michael Schumacher drove.

“I can’t wait to get out on track with this special team. I think we have everything we need to fight for the World Championship – and you are a driving force for us.”

The report goes on to say that Hamilton then ‘promised’ Ferrari’s fans that he would learn Italian. Hamilton has already delivered a message in Italian to Ferrari’s staff but was still having to read it off his phone, although the effort wouldn’t have gone unnoticed.

Charles Leclerc can learn from Lewis Hamilton during first Ferrari F1 season together

While Leclerc the SF90 from the 2019 season in Milan, Hamilton was handed Ferrari’s 2021 car – the SF21.

Neither car went on to dominate Formula 1 and it doesn’t look like the SF-25 is going to end that trend.

However, Leclerc and Hamilton is arguably the team’s strongest line-up in decades and may be able to make up for any of the car’s shortcomings with their talent.

Peter Windsor thinks Leclerc can learn from Hamilton and remove some of the weaknesses that have prevented him from mounting a serious title challenge in the past.

Hamilton may have to be selfish in that regard and not give away too much to the Monegasque star.

  • Wisconsin basketball takes a disappointing but justified slide in AP Top 25

Wisconsin basketball takes a disappointing but justified slide in AP Top 25

The Wisconsin Badgers decided to have their worst game of the season as their final regular season game. It was a brutal and frustrating loss in which Wisconsin looked lost and confused for half the game and couldn’t drop shots. They also added another injury to their report in Nolan Winter, who had something happen in his shoulder on a dunk. It was layers of frustration and disappointment.

The AP Top 25 also recognized it as a bad day for the Badgers, dropping them six spots from No. 12 to No. 18. The Badgers don’t look like the same team from February and hopefully getting Max Klesmit back from injury will make a huge difference and get the trajectory of the post season on the right track. The sky is the limit for this team, but they also know how to play in the basement.

Fans definitely feel the team deserved to be dropped in the polls, and some are frustrated enough to wonder how they are still ranked. However, the Badgers’ resume is still as strong as that of any top-15 team in the country. They only have one Quad-2 loss and six Quad-1 wins. That’s elite still even with a clunker to end the season against Penn State.

The Badgers are still projected to be a three-seed in the NCAA tournament, and they are currently in the five-seed spot for the Big Ten Tournament. While in years past, Big Ten Tournament games didn’t change a resume much, winning the whole thing would go a long way for the Wisconsin Badgers, not only for momentum into the NCAA Tournament but also for seeding.

The Wisconsin Badgers’ first game (second round) in the Big Ten Tournament is Thursday, March 13, against the winner of the No. 12 Minnesota Golden Gophers and the No. 13 Northwestern Wildcats.

  • Pundit stunned by something Nuno Espirito Santo did during Nottingham Forest win he’s never seen it before

Pundit stunned by something Nuno Espirito Santo did during Nottingham Forest win he’s never seen it before

Nottingham Forest came out on top against Manchester City at the City Ground over the weekend.

The contest was between the teams sitting in third and fourth in the Premier League table, with Forest the team holding their nerve to claim a huge three points on Trentside.

Forest scored the game’s only goal with just seven minutes remaining. Callum Hudson-Odoi cost Forest £3 million and his latest goal might just prove to be completely priceless.

Ola Aina was praised for his efforts but in truth, this was a performance that saw every player produce a big team effort with Nuno Espirito Santo producing a tactical masterclass over Pep Guardiola.

Robbie Mustoe shares what wowed him about Nuno Espirito Santo

This was a glorious day at the City Ground and one that supporters won’t be forgetting in a hurry.

City might not be the dominant force they once were this season but ultimately, they’re still a team brimming with talent all over the pitch.

Forest turned up and did a job on them, waiting patiently to force their counters and then poetically picking the Citizens off with just seven minutes to play.

Robbie Mustoe lauded the performance and after the win he’s conceded that Espirito Santo did something that left him speechless.

He said on The 2 Robbies Podcast: “Nuno tweaks more than people think. Dominguez is a central midfielder but out of possession he played wide on the right. Morgan Gibbs-White who is often a 10, comes a lot deeper. I’ve never seen that before and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s different’, he mixed it up and the proof was in the pudding today.”

Espirito Santo has proved Tottenham fans wrong at Forest

Appointing Espirito Santo to replace Steve Cooper was frowned upon by outsiders looking into the club and largely because of his failed spell with the basket case that is Tottenham Hotspur.

Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho couldn’t achieve success with Tottenham, so what chance did Espirito Santo – unwanted by the fans anyway – stand when it came to producing the goods.

Espirito Santo celebrated accordingly after this win. He was clearly overjoyed by the performance level of his players, and he got everything he did spot on during the clash.

Sometimes the style of play that Forest play isn’t aesthetically pleasing, but when it comes to the Premier League, there are more ways than one to win games of football.

It’s great that Mustoe has praised the Forest head coach and he is now on the cusp of achieving something truly special with the football club this season.

Nottingham Forest solidified their position in the Premier League top four on Saturday (8 March) with a crucial victory against Man City.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men defeated the defending Premier League champions by a goal to nil at the City Ground to grow the gap between them to four points in the table.

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the only goal of the game which came in the 82nd minute as he beat Ederson at his near post to secure a crucial three points.

The goal left City fans fuming with their first-choice goalkeeper as they have called for Pep Guardiola to drop Ederson moving forward after he failed to keep the shot out.

However, Forest fans will only care about the fact that they are now in a stronger position in third place as they prepare for the final stretch of this campaign.

Forest also put pressure on Arsenal and closed the gap on the Gunners after Mikel Arteta’s men dropped two points against Man United on Sunday (9 March).
