Ugly, old-school approach’ – BBC pundit backs Town star Delap for England call-up

Fara Williams thinks Liam Delap, main image, could get a call-up from new England boss Thomas Tuchel, inset, on Friday

BBC football pundit Fara Williams has backed Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap to get an England call-up later this week.

Delap, 22, has been one of few bright spots in a tough top tier season for the Blues, often bullying world class defenders and bagging 10 goals in 27 games so far.

And that’s prompted former England international Williams to suggest that he may get a call-up when new national boss Thomas Tuchel names his first squad on Friday.

Thomas Tuchel in the stands at Selhurst Park on Saturday

The German has reportedly drawn up a 55-name long list of players who could be included, and was in the stands at Selhurst Park as Delap and Town lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

While he apparently texted Palace’s England hopefuls – the likes of Dean Henderson, Adam Wharton, Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze – a good luck message before the game, he would no doubt have also been keen to have a look at Delap.

And in her latest column for BBC Sport, Williams said she believes Delap offers something that no other English striker does.

“Liam Delap has shone in an Ipswich team that are potentially going to go back down and could be a real option for Tuchel,” she wrote.

Fara Williams has backed Delap for England

“In terms of his goals and his presence, he has an ugly, old-school type of approach to his game. I don’t think any of the other English strikers have that.

“He has that style of being willing to have a fight with a defender even as a lone striker and I don’t think the others have that in their locker.

“In terms of what he does with the ball in front of goal, he’s a really calm finisher. He’s somebody that given time is definitely an option for Tuchel and he could look at him in this squad as a back-up to Harry Kane, who cannot play forever.

“To get those goals and have the season he has had in a very average Ipswich team in the Premier League, it has not been easy.”

Liam Delap has bagged 10 Premier League goals so far this season

Williams concluded: “In terms of finishing in the box, he is similar to Kane but I don’t think Kane has the physical side in the same way.

“Delap is better at that than him but he is not able to drop into pockets and find forward passes as well as Kane can.

“Delap has some similar attributes to Kane but also offers something different and is definitely in with a shout for featuring in the upcoming international break.”

England host Albania in a World Cup qualifier on Friday, March 21st, in Tuchel’s first game in charge.

They then entertain Latvia in another qualifier on Monday, March 24th.

He has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season for the Tractor Boys, who are embroiled in a battle for Premier League survival.

There have previously been reports of Leeds eyeing a reunion and The Sun have claimed Leeds are keeping tabs on Phillips’ progress.

It is believed a permanent move away from Manchester City is likely in the summer, with the 29-year-old in need of a fresh start.

He remains a popular figure among Leeds supporters, having been a key figure in the club’s Championship promotion-winning 2019/20 campaign..

Phillips was a crucial cog in Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds machine in the Premier League, helping the Whites surge into the top half and then retain their top-flight status a year later.

Discussing his time at Ipswich in October, Phillips said: “I’m loving it. It’s a lovely part of the world. I never expected to be down here, but it just happened.

“I spoke to [Kieran] McKenna in pre-season and he was very keen on bringing me here. Obviously, I knew Leif (Davis, former Leeds defender). Leif was Facetiming me every day for the three weeks before I signed.

“When I spoke to the manager I just knew he would put trust in me and make sure everything he did was to my benefit and would make sure I got better every day, as long as I went along with everything he wanted.”

Leeds’ summer business will be dictated by their fate in the race for promotion from the Championship.

Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev are the two defensive-minded midfielders at Farke’s disposal, but the latter is currently out injured.

Ipswich Town captain Luke Woolfenden confirmed that he was subject to interest from Championship promotion hopefuls Sheffield United in the most recent transfer window.

Defender Woolfenden came through the Tractor Boys’ academy to make over 200 appearances for Ipswich, but was heavily linked to a move away in January following the arrival of Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta.

But no move was forthcoming, leaving the towering centre-back to remain at Portman Road.

Luke Woolfenden confirms transfer interest from Sheffield United during January transfer window

After earning back-to-back promotions under Kieran McKenna, flying from League One to the Premier League in consecutive seasons, Ipswich strengthened heavily over the summer to reinforce their squad ahead of their top-flight return.

The defence saw multiple new signings, with new centre-backs Jacob Greaves and Dara O’Shea arriving from Hull City and Burnley respectively.

As such, Woolfenden saw his 40 starts during last season’s Championship campaign turn into just 9 starts in Ipswich’s 28 Premier League games so far this year.

With Woolfenden’s gametime limited at Portman Road, naturally there was interest from other clubs.

Sheffield United were attributed with interest, as well as more exotic destinations such as MLS outfit Inter Miami.

Inter Miami, owned by former England star David Beckham, currently boast a squad of seasoned internationals such as Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez, and Lionel Messi.

Woolfenden quickly quashed suggestions that he was wanted by Inter Miami, but did confirm to the East Anglian Daily Times that there had been interest from other clubs, including Sheffield United.

Asked by the EADT about the rumours linking him to Sheffield United and Inter Miami, Woolfenden shared: “There’s interest most windows. I think that’s part and parcel of being a footballer.

“The Inter Miami one was a bit wide of the mark because otherwise I’m not sure I’d be sitting here! I’d be playing with Messi!

“So I’m not sure that one was true, but there was certainly interest from elsewhere.”

Sheffield United have been long-term admirers of Luke Woolfenden

    Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder

It is not the first time Sheffield United have looked to sign Woolfenden, with the defender first catching their eye in 2020.

At the time, Ipswich were plying their trade in League One, whilst the Blades were in the Premier League during current manager Chris Wilder’s first stint in charge.

Back in 2020, Woolfenden addressed the transfer speculation, sharing: “It’s nice to be linked with big clubs but I’m focused on taking Ipswich back to where we should be.

“I don’t really get involved in all of that (transfer talk). Everybody knows what I’m like. There’s been no bids so there’s nothing to worry about.

“Everyone’s dream and goal is to play as high as they possibly can and for me I obviously want to play in the Premier League, but that doesn’t mean I want to leave right now.

“Ipswich is a massive club so if I could get to the Premier League with Ipswich it would be unbelievable.

“Ipswich Town shouldn’t be in League One so to get them promoted, as an Ipswich lad, would be massive.”

But things quickly changed for Woolfenden when Paul Cook replaced Paul Lambert as manager.

He found himself training with the Tractor Boys’ reserves, believing his future to lie elsewhere.

Woolfenden shared: “I was training with the Under 23s most of the time so I was nailed on to go.

“I was waking up most mornings and wanting to be anywhere else other than Ipswich.”

However, it would take until 2025 for the Blades to reignite their interest in the defender.

But Sheffield United’s hopes of signing the 26-year-old have been diminished by the fact that Woolfenden has signed a new deal with Ipswich.

The centre-back had been set to be out of contract this summer, but will now remain at his first professional club until the summer of 2027.

“I’ve said over the last few years that this is probably the best place to be in the Football League,” continued Woolfenden.

“It’s a club that, besides the manager, has a lot of ambition behind it with the owners, with Mark (Ashton), that it’s driven to keep this club where it is now. So it was a really good feeling to get the contract done.

“I’ve said numerous times that I love working here under the boss and the coaching staff.

“Every session is enjoyable. You don’t need to play every game here to improve as a player, whereas at other clubs you might have a bit of a jolly up and just go through the motions. Here we’re bang at it every day.”

‘The Change of Association Platform outlines its role: “The FIFA Change of Association Platform is a key resource for the football community, providing details about players who have requested and obtained a favourable change of association decision from the Players’ Status Chamber of the FIFA Football Tribunal to change their ‘sporting nationality’.

“This list includes players who have transferred their affiliation to a new MA [member association] in order to be eligible to participate for their representative teams in international football.”

Whether Hirst is added to the Scotland squad for the Greece games remains to be seen with Clarke having suggested that that might require someone else to pick up a knock, although it would appear inevitable that someone will drop out.

The Scots play Greece in a two-legged Nations League play-off in Piraeus on Thursday 20th March and at Hampden Park the following Sunday.

Town keeper Cieran Slicker was named in the squad, the second time the 22-year-old has been included at senior level having skippered the U21s.

Wisconsin basketball AP Poll ranking Update Penn State loss

Wisconsin basketball (23-8, 13-7 Big Ten) fell to No. 18 in the latest edition of the AP Poll.

The poll’s update arrives after the Badgers’ 1-1 week on the hardwood, which included a much-needed seven-point road win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers and a disheartening 11-point defeat to Penn State.

While the triumph against Minnesota showcased Wisconsin’s poise and depth in a harsh road environment, the loss to the Nittany Lions was the most detrimental of any Wisconsin experienced this season. The result dropped Greg Gard’s team six spots in the latest AP Poll, down to No. 20 in the NCAA’s NET rankings and to No. 14 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Badgers are also down four spots (from No. 19 to No. 23) in the ESPN BPI and two spots in KenPom (from No. 10 to No. 12).

Most importantly, Wisconsin relinquished an opportunity to clinch a double-bye in the 2025 Big Ten Tournament. The team will now square off against the winner of Minnesota-Northwestern in the second round on Thursday, March 13.

Wisconsin is one of seven Big Ten teams in the latest AP Top 25. Michigan State holds the No. 7 position after wins over Iowa and Michigan. Maryland (No. 11), leapfrogged the Badgers after convincing wins over Michigan and Northwestern punctuated an outstanding 2024-25 slate. Purdue (No. 20), Michigan (No. 22), Oregon (No. 23) and Illinois (No. 24) all moved from the ‘receiving votes’ section into the top 25.

UCLA, which defeated Wisconsin in late January, also received 52 votes to remain in the ‘receiving votes’ section.

Texas A&M’s big-time win over Auburn on March 4 made the Aggies the biggest mover in this week’s poll (up eight spots from No. 22 to No. 14). The BYU Cougars were another big mover (up six spots from No. 23 to No. 17) after a road win over Iowa State on March 4.

Wisconsin, alongside Missouri, Michigan and Marquette, dropped at least five spots to close the regular season. No other program fell more than four spots in this week’s edition.

Outside of Penn State, every team to beat Wisconsin this season either made it into the AP Top 25 or the ‘receiving votes’ section. That type of resume accurately portrays Wisconsin’s top-end form throughout the year.

The Badgers’ NCAA Tournament seed will depend on how they perform in the conference tournament. Until then, UW will concentrate on preparing for the Golden Gophers or Wildcats on March 13.

Wisconsin Senior Wing John Tonje Named First-Team All-Big Ten

John Tonje, a senior transfer wing at Wisconsin, has been unanimously named a first-team All-Big Ten selection by coaches and media. This marks the first time a Badger has achieved this distinction since Johnny Davis in 2022 and the 16th all-time for the program since 1948.

Tonje led the team in scoring, averaging 18.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, contributing significantly to Wisconsin’s surprising fourth-place finish in the conference. He’s also received accolades such as Transfer of the Year and third-team All-American from various outlets. Wisconsin is set to commence postseason play in the Big Ten Tournament against the winner of Minnesota and Northwestern.

Tonje averaged 18.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in 31 starts.

He scored 22.5 points per game against top-50 ranked teams, shooting 43.2% from beyond the arc.

Tonje recorded four 30-point games this season, the most among major conference players.

Wisconsin tied for fourth in the Big Ten, far exceeding their preseason expectation of a 12th-place finish.

They are the No. 5 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, set to play Thursday in Indianapolis.

Wisconsin will face the winner of the game between No. 12 Minnesota and No. 13 Northwestern, with potential implications for NCAA tournament seeding depending on their performance.

Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton smiles and looks at the camera at 2025 Bahrain pre-season testing

    .

Sky F1’s Ted Kravitz has pointed to “very positive signs” for Lewis Hamilton after his initial tests for Ferrari, from how the car drives to how he is seated within the cockpit.

The seven-time World Champion’s seating position became an issue towards the end of his time at Mercedes, commenting that the team’s 2023 challenger, the W14, had its cockpit “too close to the front”, as the driver’s seating position “changes the attitude of the car” and can make it less predictable to drive – a concern Kravitz says is not the case at Ferrari.

Kravitz points out ‘very positive signs’ for Lewis Hamilton ahead of Ferrari debut

Mercedes acted to adjust the seating position for the drivers on last season’s car, the W15, with Hamilton and George Russell taking two victories apiece in the 40-year-old’s final campaign with the Silver Arrows.

A new era is set to begin for Hamilton in Australia as he drives for his third Formula 1 team, having undergone a full pre-season schedule with Ferrari.

Having spoken in a complimentary fashion about his new car, the SF-25, Sky F1’s Kravitz believes the seven-time World Champion is aware of Ferrari’s potential when it comes to a possible push for a record-breaking eighth title.

“There are some very positive signs that Hamilton is enjoying the way the Ferrari drives more than the Mercedes,” Kravitz told Sky Sports F1.

“I think he has got what he wanted in terms of driver positioning within the cockpit. There are no complaints on any side.

“Crucially, he has identified that the designers and the team behind him are up to championship quality, and he recognises that he has everything he needs in the team to develop the car and out-develop his rivals to try and win this year’s championship.

“So even if the Ferrari isn’t winning races at the start of the season, Lewis Hamilton is sure that they will be able to win races and catch up with whoever the pacesetter is.”

Speaking after pre-season testing in Bahrain, Hamilton admitted the Ferrari is “massively different in characteristics” to what he has driven before at Mercedes.

This season marks his first in Formula 1 without using Mercedes engines, too, having driven for McLaren during a previous Mercedes-powered era.

Explaining his first impressions of his new car, as well as comparing what he has driven beforehand, Hamilton told media including PlanetF1.com in Bahrain: “Well firstly, they’re very well built, and massively different in characteristics.

“But rather than just jump into a different car and having it exactly the same, it’s been refreshing to have something different, to learn different ways in which you have to drive the car, different requirements to how you approach corners.

“The engine has a different tone, a different feel, different drivability, and I’ve been driving Mercedes for so long, which was such a great power unit, and it’s great to see that Ferrari also have a great power unit.

“And it’s something that I’m, again, spending time with the engineers from the engine department and learning of the processes they take to for reliability and power. That’s a process in itself, but so far it’s been really great.”

  • Mavericks’ shocking Kevin Durant trade stance is exactly what fans prayed for

Mavericks’ shocking Kevin Durant trade stance is exactly what fans prayed for

The Dallas Mavericks are possibly in the midst of one of the most confusing seasons in franchise and sports history. A slew of untimely injuries and questionable trades have put the Dallas Mavericks in a tight spot ahead of the 2025 NBA Playoffs.

With Anthony Davis healthy, the team may be good enough to make a play-in push and continue to stay competitive. On the other hand, the team could shut down Davis for the remainder of the season and enter the offseason with a blank slate.

Either way, Dallas will have plenty to work on this offseason and it may start with a complete roster shakeup as the team’s future is uncertain.

Kevin Durant is at the top of many headlines after things have gone sour since joining the Phoenix Suns. Durant would no doubt make any game a must-watch, and the Mavericks’ name has been tossed around in recent trade rumors regarding the future Hall of Famer, and this is a move many fans are hoping won’t happen.

Mavericks’ true feelings about a trade for Kevin Durant revealed

Through the closing days of the trade deadline, Durant and Dallas had been in rumors for a few days before talks were shut down. Durant is now in a situation as a Sun where he will likely be traded over the summer and Dallas may be a destination he is eyeing for a story book ending to his career.

Durant would no doubt make Dallas a must-watch team and give them an incredible big three, but NBA insider Marc Stein was quick to shut down those talks (subscription required) in a recent article on “The Stein Line.”

“Dallas has repeatedly been described as a potential Durant suitor, before the deadline and since, but I continue to hear that reports of interest have been overstated, ” Stein wrote. “The Mavericks, based on my best read, are not currently planning for a three-star construction.”

Stein never said that Dallas didn’t show interest in Durant, but he makes it clear that what was reported at the trade deadline was a little over the top.

To some fans, this may be yet another head scratching decision the Mavericks have decided on, considering Durant will no doubt be a Hall of Famer, and his addition in Dallas would make for an insane three-star lineup: However, to many fans, Durant’s addition would create yet another disappointing trio.

Durant has now been a part of two disappointing three-star squads that failed to make an impact on the biggest stage. His first was with Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn, where the two seemingly couldn’t get on the floor at the same time as injuries and off-court issues piled up.

Durant’s addition would not only stranglehold the Mavericks for the foreseeable future, but the 36-year-old only adds more uncertainty to an aging core. Durant’s age and asking price should be enough for Dallas to put a halt on any wishes they may have about getting him, as they would have to give up multiple first-round picks and a young player.

It’s unclear how much of a chance the Mavericks had at the trade deadline to acquire Durant, but fans should be excited that Dallas is seeming to pivot away from rumors on the aging star. Durant would give the Mavericks much needed attention from the fanbase, but the long term effects may not be worth it.

  • Why newly acquired QB Justin Fields will play position like no other in Jets history

Why newly acquired QB Justin Fields will play position like no other in Jets history

When an organization makes wholesale changes, as the New York Jets did this offseason, the pendulum often swings in the opposite direction because it overcompensates for its perceived shortcomings. That’s why teams go from a player-friendly coach to a disciplinarian or vice versa.

The pendulum theory certainly applies to the Jets and their quarterback situation. They replaced a historically great player in Aaron Rodgers, 41, who was unsteady at times in his two seasons in New York, with a 26-year-old rocket ship in Justin Fields, who still is trying to find his way as a complete quarterback.

They’ll go from a prolific passer — Rodgers set a franchise record with 624 dropbacks last season — to one of the greatest running quarterbacks in NFL history. Fields has averaged 50.2 rushing yards per game in four seasons; the only player with a higher average is Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson (59.9).

Not only did the Jets change quarterbacks, but they changed the personality of the position in Year 1 under coach Aaron Glenn. Yes, a lot of things will be different about the Jets, who rebooted after a disastrous 5-12 season.

On Monday, the first day of the free agent negotiating period, the Jets agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract with Fields, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal includes $30 million in guarantees, which suggests the Jets intend to make Fields their starter. They might try to spin it as a competition between him and respected backup Tyrod Taylor, but Fields’ contract gives him a decided edge.

Fields will be reunited with former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson, who is said to be thrilled with the addition. In 2020, a pandemic-shortened season, Wilson caught 43 passes for 723 yards and six touchdowns in eight games with Fields as the Buckeyes’ starter.

For the Jets, Fields’ exceptional mobility will provide a unique dimension. One former Jets official said Fields “may be the best, total athletic QB in club history.” They haven’t had a lot of them. The franchise record for most rushing yards in a season by a quarterback is 453, set in 1960 by Al Dorow. In the Super Bowl era, the best year came from Geno Smith, who ran for 366 yards as a rookie in 2013.

The Jets haven’t employed many fleet-footed quarterbacks. True, they did have Michael Vick in 2014, but he was on his last legs as Smith’s backup, and, if he were to get the starting nod, Taylor’s running days seem to be over, as he averaged 17.9 rushing yards per game in 11 appearances with the New York Giants in 2023.

Fields can change that. We’re talking about a quarterback who rushed for 1,143 yards in 2022, his second year with the Chicago Bears. If he gets on a roll, he might eclipse Dorow’s mark by Halloween. The threat of a running quarterback should unlock the entire running game, which struggled last season (31st in yards). This bodes well for Breece Hall (876 yards), a talented back who often found himself swallowed up in the backfield.

It will be up to first-time offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand to devise a system that capitalizes on Fields’ strengths. It will be a departure for Engstrand, who came from the Detroit Lions with Jared Goff, a pure pocket passer with limited mobility. Look for more run-pass options, zone reads and one-read pass plays. Fields can make plays, if used correctly. The Jets can run the ball and rely on their defense under their defensive-minded head coach. It won’t be a wide-open, high-flying attack like the Lions.

Glenn said recently he wants his quarterback to have mental and physical toughness and be “a winner.” He didn’t mention anything about arm strength or accuracy. Fields was a winner at Ohio State, but he has won only 14 of 44 starts in the NFL, including 4-2 with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. The big question is whether he can carry a team with his arm, not just his legs.

Justin Fields became the third quarterback to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season in 2022. His running ability gives the New York Jets something they haven’t had in the past. Darron Cummings/AP

Since 2021, Fields ranks 29th in Total QBR and 34th in completion percentage over expected. He did show some subtle improvements in Pittsburgh — he was 17th in EPA per dropback when he was replaced by Russell Wilson — but he still has many naysayers who question whether he can be a long-term answer because of his lack of production from the pocket.

The Jets don’t know the answer, either, but they will have a year to figure it out. If it doesn’t work, they can escape the contract in 2026.

But one thing is certain: Fields will play the position like no other in Jets history.
